[tslug] Re: installfest
Well, that's certainly a question you don't see every day. I would think that the major bootloaders would have no problem booting MS-DOS, I assume the bootloading process has stayed the same. Esoteric questions like that are probably better served with a Google search, I would suggesting searching for ms dos lilo (lilo being the name of a major Linux boot loader) or searching for ms dos grub boot loader (grub also being the name of a boot loader, but is a noun so you have to add the boot loader part.) I doubt a machine with DOS on it would have the hard drive space for dual-booting, so the question is probably academic anyway. As far as your previous message, all of those machines (with the exception of the Amiga... you would install Linux on that mostly for its novelty value I think, I would certainly prefer AmigaOS) would make fine servers and mediciore desktop machines. Hardware compatablity issues do not come from the processors, but the sound cards, video cards etc. On older machines like those, problems often arise. I'll trade Red Hat 9 for some CD's. ~Mike Nathaniel Green wrote: Hello all - for the installfest on Sunday at 11:45 in VH1010, I've had requests for Redhat 8, Redhat 9, and Debian. Further, if someone would bring a copy of RH9 that they're willing to part with, Andy will trade you some blank cd-r's for the install discs. [tslug] Re: Installfest and etc...
When is the install fest (like time when, not date when)? Also, where is it? I figure it might be good to know that before I start this publicity thingy. On Thursday 06 February 2003 12:44 pm, Nathaniel Green burbled: We decided to move the installfest back two weeks to Saturday the 22nd of February 2003. This will allow time for a room to be reserved, advertisements to be distributed, and PartitionMagic to arrive. Also, if you are planning on coming to the installfest that Saturday, we will be having a meeting the Wednesday before it, on the 19th of February. It would be a very good idea for you to join us that Wednesday, as we will be discussing some preparatory steps for the installfest. -- Peter Snoblin - http://www2.truman.edu/~pas577/ - To get off this list, send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with Subject: unsubscribe -
[tslug] Re: InstallFest~Linux installation help
What kind of system are you planning on putting it on? What distro do you want? Desktops with Win 9x are pretty easy to install, but laptops with win 2k or XP are more difficult. If it is using NTFS, partition magic will be required to resize the windows partition. If there is a FAT 32 (Windows 9x partition) on the machine it can be resized for a Linux install with the tools on the install cd. [tslug] Re: InstallFest~Linux installation help
Just to let everyone know, lest the list become inundated with offers to help, I agreed to help Ashley install Linux on her box. An HP laptop running XP, luckily there's already a partition set up for Linux. I'm sure any links to beginner's Linux information would be helpful though, so anyone who knows of some good tutorials should post them. It might also be useful to compile this list to be added to the website.
