Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Lots of website is not opening

2015-08-19 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Are you using a Router? Then Try pinging the router. and see if there is
packet loss.

I faced similar problem previously and this problem is so infuriating! This
happens due to network card driver as far I remember,

You can try the following:
1. Upgrading the Kernel may fix the issue.
2. Use a external network adapter instead of builtin one.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] To use wireless connectivity

2015-02-12 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Laptop's supposed to have Wireless adapter built-in and Ubuntu should auto
detect it, Check indicator panel for the list of available wireless
networks,

also You seems you are using a very old Ubuntu version, upgrading
recommended, once you have internet available off course;

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] ল্যুসিড লি ংক্স রিভিউ ও বাগ !

2010-05-02 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Using from Lucid from beta 2

First updated from Kermic > Lucid ..
Had some problem with my nvidia gfx, installing driver fixed it...
but then I did a new installation, working fine. Very stable and Boot is
quiet fast. but sometimes ui gets slow, maybe its due to the X's bug

Also installed on my wife's Laptop. works perfectly out of box. but there is
a strange flickering issue, maybe because of intel's built-it gfx card.

at the end Its an excellent release :)

PS: Kermic was also a rock solid release for me

using it right now ... lots of interesting additions. There are some beta

2. sound preference is nicer, setting up surround sound is easier and works

3. Grub is now version 2
4. UI is updated

agreed, Vista looks damn ugly without aero desktop and you need a heavy
deauty system ... but you can make Linux look anyway you want. I just can't
stand Windows look and feel ... its so irritating ... and limited ...

new tip I just found for Linux:

middle click on the maximize box to maximize vertically
right click on the maximize box to maximize horizontally

I don't think Windows ever had these clever, little useful options that just
changes the way you work ...

I don't think thats Firefox's fault. Its clear that there is something wrong

you can't blame Firefox for failing to work with a buggy extension.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] need suggestions about IDE

2009-08-10 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Hello,
There are many options for developing web applications. But you wont find
any WYSIWYG IDE's like Dreamweaver. Personally I strongly dislike WYSIWYG
IDEs as it creates ugly codes and adds too much bells and whistle. I always
suggest others not to use these IDE's as it will stop you from learning the
basics. If you say it saves time but in the long run it will certainly eat
up your time.

but there are many excellent editors to develop web applications on Linux. I
could have suggested VIM, which I use, but I'll not suggest it to someone
with macromedia background at start :p

almost all the Linux based editors support hi-lighting css, xhtml/html, js
and php so if you write code by hand you can use any of them

eclipse with php extenstion (requires java and a big download but is
excellent for php development, use torrent to download)
gedit (gnome)
kate (kde, probably supports auto completion)
geany (excellent editor, supports auto completion)
bluefish (slow but with many options, supports auto completion)
cssed for working extensively with CSS supports auto completion

now let me tell you about my favorite VIM, it has everything that other
editors has and more. Its excellent but have a very steep learning curve.
but give it some time, you'll hate working on other editors.

Some small suggestions
1. install tidy a small terminal based application to beautify/verify your
pure html/xhtml code
2. Never ever write inline CSS, EVER.
3. Don't use tables to design website, not even you are in hurry, Tables are
for tabular display of data not for design. it slows page loading and bad
for search engine optimizations.
4. install php-cli then you can use a makefile to find out syntax errors
(helps a lot in VIM) php -l to a file for finding syntax error
5. to do cross browser tests
a. midori/chrome/konquerer for webkit browsers
b. ies4linux internet explorer version 5-8
c. www.browsershots.org any browser you want :p

taglist - http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=273

Its feels over crowded for me ... I like minimal and simple ... so GNOME is
the way to go for me (wish it could used separate wallpapers on each
monitor). I have dumped Eye candy(compiz) and now using Openbox as my
default window manager. it feels good :D

@maSnun
use tag for displaying codes ;)

I myself like python very much. Can do so many thing without much hassle. I
use Glade to develop UI. I prefer the designer than hard coding the GUI
codes

Don't go for GUI programming first. Learn the basic stuffs first. Then when
you have learned the basics go for some network programming and then some
GUI programming.

there might be fat chances to cause havoc to your system by not updating

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] উবুন্টুর ফ ায়ারফক্সে বুকম াকর্ হয়না

2009-07-06 Thread Tarin Mahmood
do you have any idea about permissions in Linux? if not then please read
about it, use google to learn about it ;)

your firefox settings are saved under .mozilla folder

firefox bookmarks are saved as sqlite database named 'bookmarks.sqlite' in
your profile folder. Probably the permission of this file has been changed
so you are unable to write to it. so you can either delete the profile
folder so that you can start a new profile (easier) or you can fix the
permission (if that is the problem)

good idea to check whats wrong run firefox from termial. you might get some
error messages that might help you to detarmine the problem

You can use a lot of tools to develop GUI using python, Look around in
Package manager, wxWidget is very well known, I have worked with GTK which
is quite easy and simple.

http://www.diveintopython.org/toc/index.html << is a good book to start with

I guess, you'll have to wait until a better solution is provided by
Canonical (Ubuntu's parent company) or you can get a NVIDIA/ATI card, those
have better driver support for Linux

good luck :)

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] [OT] Re: OS for low configuration Computer

2009-05-11 Thread Tarin Mahmood
My suggestion for the OP is

Setup Ubuntu then replace GNOME with more lighter window manager, Openbox is
my personal suggestion. Might take a little time to get used to and will
need some tweaking, but its very efficient and very customizable when you
have all set and done. Openbox only have a single configuration folder, so
you can copy this setups to as many installations you want. I've used this
setup on a P4 with 1GB and its gets noticably faster.

You can find my configuration files here:
http://github.com/tmahmood/vimrc_config/tree/master

Running VS2008 in PII machine sounds too much. It would have a hard time
running Windows XP. Are you sure?

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Feedback

2009-05-08 Thread Tarin Mahmood
Here's my quick review:

I've upgraded from Intrepid, flawless.

Detected my dual monitor setup without any problems. I hate the fact that
GNOME don't support multiple wallpapers on a multimonitor setup :(

Its DAMN faster then any other version I've used upto now.

new notification system is nice, useful and less disruptive.

takes less then 30s with VirtualBox Server, Apache Server and MySQL
database. its a core 2 duo machine with 4GB Ram and a NVIDIA gfx.

Its also feels very snappy on the P4 machine at my work, I've not counted
bootup time on that machine but it feels a lot faster than intrepid.

I have manually converted my partition to ext4. no problems upto now

No problems with Firefox or Synaptic or any other apps. few crushes with
Nautilus, seems fixed now. everything else is rock solid.

Gnome-do is awesome :D

They were implementing new update notification method which sucked but
luckly got some hints on teh Internets to get back the older system

Its fast fast and fast.

I am very impressed with this release. Canonocal is going to the right
direction as far I can say

as far I understand,
wubi lets you boot up Ubuntu using the Windows boot loader. It creates a
virtual disk and boots to that disk, everything gets installed there. No Its
not Virtual machine. So there should not be any noticable performance loss.
but if the disk image gets corrupted you lose the installation. its a good
way to tryout Ubuntu, I guess.

Why bother?! I've tried this ... didn't like it much. there are many other
netbooks available. If you really intent to buy one, buy Lenova, or Asus
EEE, much better options, they both are quiet Ubuntu/Linux ready,
Specifications are much clearer. and certainly much good looking then this
:p

As far I remember there are 3 configs available, lowest is 24k, highest 28k.
Point to note is that they do have more RAM (1.5GB against 1GB)
for the sake of comparision, One of Lenova's netbook is 36k, EEE 24k to 48k

and you should use a lighter desktop, GNOME/KDE is going to be painful.

Probably you deleted the bottom panel? The task list supposed to be in the
bottom panel or probably you are facing a bug on a outdated version

> damm i dont wanna whole Application manu when i rightclick tht could be
> good for some users for open a app quickly but for me its "wired"

I'm curious, Why is right click menu on the Desktop so important? People
rarely use it, all Linux desktops auto refreshs. of cource if you put
everything in the desktop then you might need the right click menu to
organize them

but you can always change what do you want on the right click menu in
XFCE/Openbox!

LXDE Desktop is ugly ... but I have to say openbox is a awesome Window
Manager, which is iirc the default window manager in LXDE. I've used
OB+GNOME at work PC and it was quiet fast. If anyone have a older System or
need a or just want a faster UI, they should go for OB, very good
documentation and easily customizable.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] ubuntu ultimate edition

2009-02-15 Thread Tarin Mahmood
I'm not sure how ultimate edition goes against Open source movement?!

but regardless ... Ultimate edition is a big waste of time, cause the
packages are probably much older the the mainstream Ubuntu version, which
bound have many bugs and security issues and at the end you'll be force to
download updates for all the packages you install blindly.

So if you have enough time and bandwidth to download 2/3 GB iso containing
an obscured version, why not spent it on downloading small updates for the
latest version?

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Again kernel panic

2009-02-13 Thread Tarin Mahmood
If something happens with grub, most likely you won't even see a Kernel
panic, you'll see a grub error. Kernel panic *might* happen due to grub if
you have a separate boot and root partition and root partition is wrongly
configured. in this case kernel will fail to find the root partition and
panic (Happened to me once but I'm not sure if it was a Kernel panic though
:p)

but from dark's description, Its not like that ... but whatever ... we both
agree the panic is probably due to HD failure.. so lets focus on that
problem ...

as I've said do a disk check, if your hdd have SMART capability, do some
diagnostics (google how to do that), whatever you do ... backup backup
backup!

Nothing to do with grub ;) Kernel panic probably means there is somethings

if not most probably your kernel module for NVIDIA is corrupted,

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] [OT] openSuSE 11.1 internet connection problem

2008-12-23 Thread Tarin Mahmood
And you are also unable to access the internet iirc.

You add nameservers when your IP is static and your ISP provides the
nameserver. The Grameen Phones IPs are not static, they are Dynamic. In this
case the nameservers are automatically added to the resolve.conf, while
statically providing the nameservers might work, its wrong and might fail in
the future.

Your problem is not with nameservers, but somewhere else,
I suggest:
1. check if your hardware is detected properly.

Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Gear

Yep, he is talking about that.

I'll try to give a short explanation:

gear is a plugin for firefox (at this moment) that lets you use a web
application in offline mode. Works only with AJAX based web apps. Normal
websites will not work. As far as I know Currently Zoho writer, Google
reader, Remember the milk are some applications that supports Gears.

the basic idea is the plugin caches data (in case of google reader, feeds)
to your hard drive and let you browse the data in offline mode like you
normally would in online mode.

No its not resource hungry.

Just export the feed list as opml file, you can import the file to any
standard feed reader.

All the applications in Linux stores their information in their respective
config folder in user home drive.

Like
Firefox stores its information in /.mozilla
Thunderbird : .thunderbird
Liferia: .liferia

normally . files/folders are hidden. Ctrl+h to show them

Just delete the configuration folder in your home folder and you have a
*fresh* install of that application.

Your setting are never lost in Linux unless

1. you completely remove the application, if you only remove the application
the settings for that application will stay in you user folder.

2. you delete your user folder.

User settings are completely separated from Application.

According to Linux File Hierarchy Standard (
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html)
/media is intended to be for removable media (like usb sticks, cdrom,
floppy)
and /mnt is used for Mount points for a temporarily mounted filesystem (like
partitions fron a harddrive, network shares etc.)
But some distributors use one of them as mount points for all media.

You don't need programming to use Linux. Yes, It works differently then
Windows but that do not mean you have to learn programming. Remember you had
to learn to use Windows too. Its same with Linux. You have to give some
time. Learn the basics. and when you have the basics it will be more fun and
easier to use. Linux is awesome to those who gives a little time learning
it.

File System basics:

As for your problems, You need internet to install applications using the
package manger. Its the best way to get applications in Linux. without
internet its too much for any newcomers to download and install
applications.

I think there were some guys who made some package collection DVD. may be
you can ask them,

or
you can download required packages from this site by your self
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/i386/

or
You can download mint Linux, which is a variation of Ubuntu but with all the
multimedia packages.

have fun :)

Why people don't use the useful search box little cleverly? Its not that
hard

> Do a quick search on Synaptic with the keyword "restricted"
> choose from the list all the restricted things you need to install

why not just search by nvidia ?!!

If I remember correctly there are 2 drivers for NVIDIA in 8.04

nvidia-glx-old
nvidia-glx-new

if you have very old NVIDIA card use 95 version, DarkLord you need to use
this driver. people with newer cards should use the newest ones. Current
version is 177.

the package description clearly says which version is for which cards, so if
you are not sure just read the description.

8.10 changed the system a little, drivers are listed with their respective
official versions.

so There is
nvidia-95
nvidia-173
nvidia-177 ... etc

just remeber:
NVIDIA stop supporting old generation cards after 95 versions. Versions>95
only support latest cards. Supported versions are listed in the package
description and probably NVIDIA's website, read them and decide which
version you should use.

I'm not sure why people tries avoid updating the system to newer version.
You don't have to pay for this ... you know that right? :p

Think about it:
Reinstall + Selecting all applications that you use + Download + install +
Configuring to fit your need >>> Updating

Here I think why you should always stay updated, unless your hardware is too
old to handle it.

Platform for future upgrades, it should be easier and faster to update from
8.10 -> 9.04 than 8.04.1->9.04 with lesser chances of breaking the system.

in the latest version Nautilus supports tab and some other minor
improvements
now network manager supports configuring mobile Internet. Even it lets
configuring Grameen Edge connection.

Newer Kernel version

Linux kernel now supports DKMS that automatically recompiles 3rd party
kernel modules. As I use Virtual machines its very useful for me. Its also a
life saver as I've a NVIDiA Graphics card. kernel updates won't break the X
now :)
its my personal preference is to alway update to the latest version. It
only take 2/3 days to complete the updates. I'm ready to accept that. I just
start the update in one of the tty's and go on with my works.

My 8.04.1 -> 8.10 update was 1GB+ download

users can start a quick "guest session" on the fly and let someone use
their computer to surf the web or check email, while maintaining the
security and integrity of their own data

Its very useful say if you are accessing your Friends PC, you don't want any
of your browsing history to be saved in his PC. So you log in using the
guest account. The moment you log out out of the account, all the
informations are deleted, nothing is saved.

what is the uses of "Make USB Startup disk" ? is this just a tool which
make bootable live ubuntu usb disk ?

DAMN useful, Live Ubuntu USB disk, plugin and boot. You have your whole OS.
now large USB media's are cheap so its going to be very very useful. As its
an USB disk so you can save session data. This was also implemented in FC9
