[Ubuntu-BD] Linus Torvalds Switched Back To Gnome
http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linus-torvalds-switched-back-to-gnome.html Linus Torvalds, Linux's creator, dislikes the GNOME desktop. There was a big flame war(s) between Linus Torvalds and the GNOME community. At one point he claimed that - /Gnome seems to be developed by interface Nazis and that its developers believe their users are idiots/. And guess what? Who made the switch to Gnome? Now, Linus thinks KDE 4 sucks and it is a disaster. From the computerworld http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasictaxonomyName=SoftwarearticleId=9126619 interview: I used to be a KDE user. I thought KDE 4.0 was such a disaster I switched to GNOME. I hate the fact that my right button doesn't do what I want it to do. But the whole break everything model is painful for users and they can choose to use something else. I realise the reason for the 4.0 release, but I think they did it badly. They did so may changes it was a half-baked release. It may turn out to be the right decision in the end and I will re-try KDE, but I suspect I'm not the only person they lost. I tried KDE4 for day or two.. and it had some nasty bugs and features. To be frank, KDE 3.5 was much better and superior to GNOME. Personally, I prefer GNOME's easy to follow clean interface without bugs. Re: [Ubuntu-BD] Linus Torvalds Switched Back To Gnome
So what is going on now? KDE is loosing users? Well I'm a Gnome fan from the very beginning but I liked the the ঝাকানাকা interface of KDE too. As I never used KDE I don't have much knowledge of it's changes. It seems like they are following Microsoft, as MS is also making changes to their interface and pushing the users to use that. :) -- Omi Azad - http://omi.net.bd | +8803894550305 | Contributor of Ekushey - http://ekushey.org On Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 2:50 PM, Shahriar Tariq shahr...@linux.org.bdwrote: On Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 2:13 PM, DarkLord (:= darklord2...@gmail.com wrote: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/linus-torvalds-switched-back-to-gnome.htmlI tried KDE4 for day or two.. and it had some nasty bugs and features. I am also a Gnome fan. But I tried openSUSE 11.1 KDE 4.1.3 and it never crashed for me. I used it for a short time, like a week or 10 days. But it really never crashed. Anyway, openSUSE is the boss of KDE. They might have been done something to make their distro stable. Re: [Ubuntu-BD] [OT] How file systems affect computer performance
On Sun, Jan 25, 2009 at 1:33 AM, Hafiz Imtiaz eee.imt...@gmail.com wrote: Hello I just want to share some experiences of you guys about the startup and shutdown time of your PC and thus decide how a file system affects these. My PC takes almost similar startup and shutdown time for both XP and Ubuntu 8.04.1 [85-90 sec for startup; 10-12 sec for shutdown]. I read and article on the internet that Ubuntu would start faster if the filesystem is XFS. So, I tried that. But the boot time was as it were. Now, I have mac os x 10.4.9 on my PC with HFS+ file system and it boots within 30sec and shuts down within 8sec. How could this happen? The other software start times like Firefox, VLC are the same as windows xp and ubuntu 8.04.1. How could boot time is reduced but the program start time remain the same? Where is the secret? Secret is obviously not the file system rather programs and services that runs on background. different distros have different background services and programs. To check the filesystem speed, Use the same distro and same config. But different filesystem. -- A K M Mokaddim http://talk.cmyweb.net http://twitter.com/shiplu Stop Top Posting !! -- Ubuntu Bangladesh mailing list ubuntu-bd@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bd
[Ubuntu-BD] Kubuntu Repo Signature problem
Hi, The problem goes back for about a month.. The problem is resulting for a series of events so I think it might be useful to know in details to provide solutions. First I switched to Ubuntu Main Repo server from Bangladesh Repo server (since there is no real Repo server in Bangladesh) at first it worked fine for about a week or two. then I started getting The following signatures were invalid: BADSIG 40976EAF437D05B5 so I tried removing the signature and adding it back (removed the signature using source list on adept) then tried to export the key $gpg -recv-keys 40976EAF437D05B5 gpg: can't open `40976EAF437D05B5' I tried switching to different Repo server and apt-get update... currently my repo server is directed to tw.. http://debian.nctu.edu.twintrepid I can update install packages (but understandably getting no authentication) W: GPG error: http://debian.nctu.edu.tw intrepid Release: The following signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available: NO_PUBKEY 40976EAF437D05B5 any suggestions?? I wish google was more spot on the first time I was googling.. it did not return any useful solutions. today I found launchpad bug report on the same bad signature problem. there are different solutions that worked for some while failed for others... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/24061 any way can anyone help me add the signature back? -- Thanking you Shahriar Volunteer, Bangladesh Linux Users Alliance http://linux.org.bd http://forum.linux.org.bd Marketing Contents Officer, Ubuntu Bangladesh http://www.ubuntu-bd.org Endorsement: আমাদের প্রযুক্তি ফোরাম http://forum.amaderprojukti.com/ and মুক্ত.অর্গ http://mukto.org -- Ubuntu Bangladesh mailing list ubuntu-bd@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bd
