[Bug 367236] [NEW] Installer indicates false changes to untouched partition tables

2009-04-26 Thread Daniel Kulesz
Public bug reported:

I used the base-installer in the latest Ubuntu 9.04 Server on the
following Configuration:

Thinkpad X21 (p3-700/192MB)
- internal 40GB HDD (sda) with Linux already installed
- USB-attached 32MB CF-Card (sdc)
- USB-attached 1024MB USB Stick (sdf)

I did this manual partitioning and deselected the swap partitition
from sda as do not use. Furthermore I created a /boot partition on the
CF card (sdc) and a / partition on the USB Stick (sdf). When finishing,
the installer warned me that I had no swap defined (that's just fine)
and then indicated that changes to the following partition tables were
made:

/dev/sda
/dev/sdc
/dev/sdf

But that's actually misleading, since no changes to the partition table
of sda are made in this case, marking a swap partition to be used or not
only affects the resulting /etc/fstab - but it does not touch the
partition table.

[Bug 226381] Re: Firefox Crashes when trying to open some sites

2009-04-26 Thread John Vivirito
I just noticed that this bug is old, reporter was using 2.0.* and that is not
supported any longer by us nor Mozilla.
If using firefox-3.0 and you get a crash here are some steps to follow as well
as the profile one in my last comment:
1. Start Firefox using the following command
firefox --safe-mode
If that fixes your problem, the most likely cause of your crash is an
extension. If you are using google gears extension, It has been known to
cause crashes for the past month or 2.
2. If the profile or the safe-mode does not fix your crash you need to file the
bug using apport.
Also when you file the bug apport will let you comment. In that comment field
please list some sites it happens on.
We prefer that you give us a flash or 2 sites, A Java site as well as normal
sites.

[Bug 367234] [NEW] KDE: Copy dialog start / stop buttons inoperative when panel is locked

2009-04-26 Thread dotancohen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase-plasma

The start / stop buttons of copy / move dialogs are inoperative when the panel
is locked. I originally reported this upstream at KDE, however, it appears that
this is a Kubuntu-specific bug. Here is the original KDE bug:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=183446

Note that that bug is _not_ an upstream for this bug! This is a Kubuntu-
specific bug, and KDE is taking no responsibility for it.

[Bug 367234] Re: KDE: Copy dialog start / stop buttons inoperative when panel is locked

2009-04-26 Thread dotancohen
In another related apparent Kubuntu-specific bug, the copy / move dialogues
cannot be dragged away from the panel in Kubuntu. However, this _is_ enabled in
KDE. See here:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=182098

Again, this is not an upstream bug, as these seem to be Kubuntu-specific
bugs and KDE is taking no responsibility for them.

[Bug 367233] [NEW] ethernet chokes with wake-on-lan deactivated

2009-04-26 Thread Traumflug
Public bug reported:

This is a curious one and all administrative attempts to narrow down the
source of the problem failed. The symptoms:

- When booting off the Live CD, network is running just fine.

- After installation, on the first boot, too.

- After another reboot, ethernet doesn't work at all, DHCP doesn't pick
up.

Further investigation:

- To satisfy the connection indicatior in the top Gnome menu bar, I can
set up ethernet manually with the default-installed tool (network-
manager-gnome?). Still, pings to computers in the same network report
Destination unreachable. ifconfig, in turn, reports what I'd expect
for a working ethernet device, IPv4 and IPv6.

- Attempts to blacklist ipv6 failed, but that's another story.

Workaround

Just by chance I found this report in german which describes pretty much
what I experienced:

http://computerverein-rostock.de/viewtopic.php?f=2578t=58386

At the bottom you see a screenshot from MS Windows. He explains how
enabling Wake-On-Lan in MS Windows solves his networking problems in
Ubuntu. Exactly as it did in my situation.

This problem seems to be fixed with Kernel 2.6.30-rc3 and the packages from the

[Bug 359133] Re: Wacom + GTK + old configuration causes Xorg to segfault with error 4 under Kubuntu Jaunty

2009-04-26 Thread Chris Drost
Jasper: did you already try the fix from bug # 358643 ? It's important
if we find out that this fix isn't universal, and you didn't say
anything about it.

Just to recap that fix here, Timo Aaltonen has a personal package
archive with patched .deb packages of xserver-xorg-core, which are
available at this URL:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/tjaalton/ppa/ubuntu/pool/main/x/xorg-server/

For at least two of us, telling dpkg to install that .deb over our
current version of xserver-xorg-core has fixed this bug.

[Bug 367239] [NEW] network manager does not show manual-managed interfaces

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

At the moment it can be very confusing when there are interfaces managed in

They won't show up in the network manager list and from that applet /

partly configured showing only the interfaces managed by nm)

[Bug 367080] Re: Acrobat Reader SIGSEGV when embedded in Firefox

2009-04-26 Thread Victor Stanescu
Please try one of the following scenarios:

a). Open two PDF files at the same time, in two tabs. Close one of the tabs. Is
the other tab still functional? In my case the second tab will be empty (with
no acroread instance inside it).
Example (just by random search on google for PDF files):
open http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/romania.pdf
open http://www.ecb.int/ecb/legal/pdf/l_02120090124ro00660068.pdf
close the http://www.ecb.int/ecb/legal/pdf/l_02120090124ro00660068.pdf tab
the http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/romania.pdf still looks ok
(not sure why, usually it was crashing at this step)
open http://www.ancex.ro/old_ancex/ATT00156.pdf
result: both pdf tabs are freezed (empty, with no content inside)

b) Find a PDF that has links to other PDF files. Unfortunately I cannot
give you an example site for this, because the only example I know is a
private site with some equipment documentation. When I navigate through
the links, after 1-2 links it crashes.

I was encountering this issue with 8.10 also, but never took time to
study enough or file a bug. But on 8.10 it was happening a lot faster
(always from the closing of the second tab, or clicking on the first
link, never later).

[Bug 367080] Re: Acrobat Reader SIGSEGV when embedded in Firefox

2009-04-26 Thread Victor Stanescu
If I close all the dead acroread tabs, and then open a PDF again,
firefox starts acroread from the scratch and everything works again for
a short while. For example, in case (b) - navigating from PDF to PDF, I
click the link, the tab dies, I copy the URL, close the tab, open a new
tab again and paste the url back, getting to the next page.

[Bug 366562] Re: Slow Desktop Menu on UNR 9.04

2009-04-26 Thread blokeley
For other reasons, I completely re-installed 9.04 UNR, formatting the
SSD to ext4. The problem is not occuring now.

Possibly a dupe of 239943 but I didn't monitor CPU usage when I had the
problem so can not confirm. Sorry for the poor information. Fixed for me
now.

2009-04-26 Thread Loïc Minier
In case you had the errors consistently with the same software (eg
always had the bug with win32-image-writer but never with usb-
imagewriter), please let us know, it might be a bug in the writing
software. If you had the issue with dd, then it's likely a hardware
issue only.

[Bug 240621] Re: Cannot access secure WebDav folders (through davs)

2009-04-26 Thread Simon
Hello all,

I'm not sure whether this is a but or just a configuration problem on my
computer (Ubuntu 9.10).

I've created a shared folder on a remote server that should be
accessible through webdav: by pasting https://mysite.org:2078 but when
doing so, I simply get the answer Could not display
https://usine21.org:2078;. Access was denied.

Before considering this as a bug, maybe the question is rather only: Is
my port 2078 closed, and how do I open it?

Simon

[Bug 367244] [NEW] tracker does not adjust to performance settings

2009-04-26 Thread Wolf Rogner
Public bug reported:

In tracker-preferences one can adjust how the tracker uses system
resources in the performance tab.

However, in 9.04 none of these settings show any effect. Same
performance requirements whether using memory or not (memory footprint
stays the same), same cpu requirements (whether doing faster or slower
setting).

On my 2 processor NB it constantly takes 70% of one CPU.

For a tool that constantly reports errors due to access problems to the
index database, no observable search results (it does not even find a
file that sits in my user directory, let alone somewhere down the path),
not capable of doing content search, this is a lot of waste of
resources.

Q1: Where is the documentation as to what it is supposed to do?
Q2: How can I uninstall it without removing all the other programs?

[Bug 367243] [NEW] hyperlinks in help:kubuntu docs appear ugly in Konqueror

2009-04-26 Thread skierpage
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kubuntu-docs

Visit help:/kubuntu/hardware/index.html in Konqueror, click a few links
and return.

Result: Visited links such as Next and the pages you've seen appear in a
horrendous pink; holding down the left mouse button on a link makes it
turn red.

A visited link should dim slightly, not turn pink; since pressing makes a
dotted box appear, no color change is necessary.
Compare with e.g. help:/gwenview/ in Konqueror.

I don't think this is a problem with the CSS, because if you view
file:/usr/share/doc/kde/HTML/en/kubuntu/hardware/index.html you see the
muted blue and dimmer blue links. The kubuntu-docs files refer to CSS
with href=../../common/kubuntu-default.css, which seems legitimate but
maybe not for help: pseudo-URLs.

[Bug 367244] Re: tracker does not adjust to performance settings

2009-04-26 Thread Wolf Rogner
Final note: The tooltip suggests that there is a progress in the
indexing (files indexed number rising). THe statistics do the same.
However, the process odt2txt is stuck with only one file (which is not
too big) and there is no progress doing searches.

[Bug 366610] Re: enigmail not working in Jaunty

2009-04-26 Thread John Vivirito
when you installed 9.04 did you install Enigmail or did you just copy
the profile? We are unable to further process this bug as we don't have
the info needed, it is unlikely that we will get the info needed since
reporter can not reproduce this bug any longer. I would say if someone
else runs into this bug we should reopen this bug or use the other bug
the user reported, I would love to see logs if this happens with
upgrade, Most likely this was caused by not installing Enigmail after
install, In other wors you were trying to use the enigmail that was part
of your profile.

Attached is the same ButtonDemon app as above with openjdk-6 but using
the fontconfig.properties file from sun-java6-bin (both in jaunty). It
doesn't show the same problem.

Any suggestions on which specific config in this file is breaking
openjdk?

Because the bug symptoms in that report weren't similar, I thought it
wasn't really a duplicate of this bug. Apparently the solution is the
same, so it is a dup after all.

[Bug 273336] Re: [intrepid] alpha 6 - WPA WPA2 Personal won't authenticate short passwords

2009-04-26 Thread Seine_Lordschaft
wicd does not solve the problem for me. Still the WLAN is not working.

I have installed wicd and removed the network manager package as
requested by ubuntu. Took me some time to realise that one needs to use
the synaptic package administration for that. I also de-installed the
gnome network manager cause I thought this is the program in question to
allow wicd to operate. Now wicd is up and running, but it doesn't find
any wireless networks.

However, when I use networks under system, there still is the old
game of entering the new password and seeing how it is changed back to
another 64-one. So the system does find the network but does not connect
due to the password-change issue.

I think this is quite a critical issue for using ubuntu. If I can't
connect to networks, I can't use the computer. All the other stuff like
open office etc. is fine, but I can't invest more time to get my WLAN
running. I'm afraid I will have to go back to windows soon.

[Bug 367250] [NEW] screen wrapper ignores $SCREENRC

2009-04-26 Thread Andrew Snare
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: screen-profiles

GNU screen normally allows a user to specify their configuration file
via the $SCREENRC environment variable. If this is not set,
$HOME/.screenrc is used.

The screen-profiles packages installs (via a redirect) a wrapper script.
Unfortunately it both ignores $SCREENRC and forces the configuration
file to be $HOME/.screenrc.

A workaround if anyone encounters this problem is to uninstall the
screen-profiles package; it is recommended by the screen package, not
required.

A patch which fixes the problem in screen-profiles is attached.

System information:

[Bug 367249] [NEW] Xserver startup messes up the framebuffer

2009-04-26 Thread thouters
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

The machine boots as normal, showing the bootsplash.
When X starts the screen stays black with purple/green bands of static.
(when booting with nosplash several malformed bios
splash screen images are
visible) Switching virtual consoles with C-Alt-Fn doesn't work anymore at this
point. Pushing the power button on this desktop machine shuts it down and the
ubuntu boot/shutdown progressbar apears properly.

This problem apeared after an upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty (which was right
after an upgrade from Gutsy to Intrepid separated by reboots), and I think it
is caused by the xserver.

The problem present independent from the driver used, I tried an empty
xorg.conf, and several forcing the ati, fglrx,
radeon, vesa, and radeonhd
drivers.

[Bug 367204] Re: gid changed after intrepid to jaunty upgrade

2009-04-26 Thread sirius
Replacing the new group file with the old one worked well (booting from a CD).
The system now works. sudo, mysql, apache, samba all are working again.
The MediaWiki problem is still there, so I'll log a different bug for that.

I would really like to know why this happened,
and why extra groups were added to the group file, such as:
kvm
libvirtd
sambashare
ssl-cert
winbind_priv
netdev
messagebus

wicd is indeed a solution.

[Bug 363088] Re: Smart Pinyin input method is missing

2009-04-26 Thread peterfrank
I can confirm this bug. After I upgrading to Jaunty from Intrepid, Smart Pinyin
disappeared from the SCIM menu. Also the Smart Pinyin module has disappeared
IM Engine-Global Setup. Removing (purge) and reinstalling scim-pinyin does
not help.
However I have found a simple workaround:
cd ~; rm -r .scim
then logout and login again.

Obviously the configuration in the home directory was messed up. But I
have never tweaked the configuration files myself (other than using the
SCIM setup GUI). So I think the Jaunty upgrade process messed up SCIM,
although I have no idea why it would happen.

On the Chinese Ubuntu Forum I've also seen a report of Smart Pinyin missing in
SCIM, after upgrade KUBUNTU to Jaunty (The link is in Chinese):
http://forum.ubuntu.org.cn/viewtopic.php?f=38t=182934
So I am pretty sure there is something wrong with the upgrade process.

[Bug 324034] Re: HDA Intel Conexant Analog does not work in KDE

2009-04-26 Thread dmoyne
not sure it is related to same bug but when booting jaunty 64 bits when
entering KDE session Phonon displays an error message saying that Intel AC 885
Analog audio does not work but :
(1) it plays the connexion sound,
(2) when testing Intel AC 885 Analog in KDE configuration sitting in first
position it plays the music !

There are some incoherencies here !
Regards.

[Bug 277903] Re: Missing Operating System [message at boot]

2009-04-26 Thread Anders Häggström
I am also affected by this bug. I booted Ubuntu 9.04-i386 image from CD. To be
sure the usbdrive is empty i run the following command first:
$ sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc

After dd was finished cleaning the usbdrive I run the tool USB disk
creator and formatted the usbdrive from within the tool.

I could then boot the usbdrive on one of my computers but on the other
one I get Could not find kernel image: linux.

After that I followed the blog and deleted the partition with fdisk and
created a new fat32-partition with GParted instead (including boot and
lba options) and then copied the CD onto the usbdrive with USB disk
creator, without formatting the drive inside the tool.

And that worked for me! I can now boot the usbdrive from both my
computers.

The failing motherboard is Gigabyte GA-M55PLUS-S3G, BIOS version F11
(04/23/2007).

The output from the diagnostic MBR (the link from TJ on 2009-03-30) when
I hold CTRL-key own during boot is: L D80 C07C HFF S3F P1 O003F
MAA55 E00. I have no clue of what that means but I hope it is valuble
for TJ. :)
