[Bug 338669] Re: (Needs UXA) painting artifacts after qt4.5 upgrade on intel chipset

2009-05-06 Thread Stephan
Little update: after re-installing intrepid on a free partition
(and sharing /home between installs) I ran into bug 372487
(just reporting here to emphasize that downgrading the OS
is usually not a good idea).

The good news: with KDE 4.2 from intrepid backports the system
is back to a usable state.
(Just took some ours of downloading both for the install and to repair
the damage of bug 372487).

Also, if anyone provides packages for KDE 4.3 in jaunty I can
immediately test the effect on an affected machine, kind of in
a sandbox, i.e., without the risk of making the machine unusable again.
Perhaps, using two bootable partitions and upgrading only one at a time
is a fair strategy to reduce risks... some redundancy of that kind seems
necessary these days ...

[Bug 372701] [NEW] autoconf description still suggest installing autobook

[Bug 99740] Re: [MASTER] Firefox problems with desktop-effects

2009-05-06 Thread Micah Gersten
** Description changed:

If Firefox is running when Desktop Effects are enabled on my Dell
Inspiron 6000 or my HP zd7000, Firefox becomes an unresponsive window
with no window decorations. It's not possible to maximize, move it, or
otherwise interact with it. Disabling Desktop Effects restores sanity.

I retest desktop-effects every couple weeks, and this problem persists.
Since firefox is probably the single most important application used by
most users, this problem pretty much guarantees no casual user will use
  Desktop Effects.

  **Steps to reproduce :
  1. Open a single instance of Firefox with no tabs open.
  2. Go to http://www.htmlgoodies.com/legacy/beyond/javascript/bigsmall.html
  3. Click the Maximize link located at the top left of this webpage.
  4. Close Firefox.
  5. Re-open Firefox.
  6. Now the titlebar for Firefox and upper/lower panels should be missing.

  Or

  1. Use the bigger resolution that your computer can take and open Firefox.
  2. If not already done, demaximize the Firefox window (right clic /
Demaximize).
  3. Close Firefox
  4. Change the screen resolution for a very lower one.
  5. Open Firefox

- **Workarounds :
- Install compizconfig-settings-manager , start ccsm, click on Workarounds
plugin in the Utility section and uncheck Legacy Fullscreen Support.
+ **WORKAROUNDS : more permanent
+ 1. Install compizconfig-settings-manager
+ 2. start ccsm
+ 3. click on Workarounds plugin in the Utility section
+ 4. uncheck Legacy Fullscreen Support.
  or
+ 1. F11 twice
+ 2. resize the windows with the mouse. Once you've set them to the right size
for you then go to
+ 3. Edit - Preferences - Content - Enable JavaScript Advanced ...
+ 4. UNtick the top (?) option which is Move or resize window. This should
prevent javascript from being able to resize your window inconviently
+ thanks to Tom
+
+ **WORKAROUNDS : temporary

[Bug 372702] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.04 - Flash plugin makes Firefox Crash

2009-05-06 Thread liquidpele
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

In Ubuntu 8.10 (with pulseaudio removed and just ALSA), watching this
flash video makes all flash sound stop until Firefox is restarted.

In Ubuntu 9.04 (no modifications, basic install) Firefox Crashes on this
video.

To reproduce, simply watch this youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WYW_lPlekiQ

It is a star trek clip so obviously it is very important to get this
working ;)

The machine I am testing on is a Lenovo T60

Testing with another desktop machine (Kubuntu (using KDE obviously)
9.04) there were no problems. I assume this is because the real issue
is between flash and the sound server used by gnome.

[Bug 361629] Re: print configuration crashed while adding printer

I previously submitted bug 368273 but the auto bug report via apport
produced a list that included this bug as well as the related 329974,

successfully built a windows shared printer using the workaround that I
described in bug report 368273 but attempted adding a second Windows
shared printer while apport was running. The printer correctly appeared
in the dialogue. When I deleted the printer and tried again, the bug
reappeared, this time captured by apport.

[Bug 361689] Re: hald segfault when using a raid volume

2009-05-06 Thread mobrien118
I think I can get you started.

I mean, the first step to creating a RAID volume is to think it out.
Where do you need redundancy? Where do you need speed? Then map out your
partitions (especially if you have different sized disks).

Remember that RAID will cause a slight (in the case of RAID0 or RAID1)
to slightly greater (RAID5 or RAID6) processor and I/O load. That is the
trade-off for getting better overall disk performance.

Although it is supposedly not needed to RAID0 your swap partitions
across disks (supposedly the swap daemon manages multiple disks very
well) it doesn't hurt to do so and is an easy and safe way to get
started with RAID. You might consider making this your test case.

This page lays out mdadm and Linux RAID pretty well:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=408461

Basically:
1. format disks you want to use as RAID partitions
2. create a RAID array using mdadm --create /dev/md0 --level=[level]
--raid-devices=[number of devices] [device1] [device2]...[deviceN]
3. assemble the array
4. format the array in the filesystem of your choice (like any other partition)
5. mount it like you would any other disk partition

Pretty simple, eh?

[Bug 372705] [NEW] nautilus doesn't update view after file/directory creation

2009-05-06 Thread Konrad Paumann
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I see following behaviour on an up to date Jaunty.
When creating a file/directory with gedit, in the shell (touch file), or by
extracting a zipped file in that directory (right click on the zipped file -
choose extract here) nautilus doesn't update its view.
I have to manually click on reload or open the directory in nautilus to see the
actual directory contents.
Also when I delete/move/copy files in the shell (in the directory that is open
in nautilus), nautilus doesn't update its view of the directory.

Expected behaviour would be that nautilus updates the view of the
directory when a file/directory is created/copied/moved/deleted in that
directory.

[Bug 206459] Re: print status doesn't update automatically

2009-05-06 Thread Alienation
This bug is in KDE 3.5.10 (probably earlyer) not in kde 4. Ubuntu 8.04

  however updated timely.

2009-05-06 Thread 3ntix
As I speek...
Just when I click to send...freeze :-)
This time the freeze is similar to type (1) but with the difference
that I can switch to the console. I've copied all /var/log/.
I want just to note that sometimes, after the crash, in the dmesg add
some message [drm] Num pipes: 1 as you can see in kern.log.
I forgot to write that, yesterday I also have installed the
libgl1-mesa-dri-dbg libc6-dbg xserver-xorg-core-dbg
xserver-xorg-video-ati-dbg packages (I don't know how use that
packages, I've just installed) but I haven't found any backtrace...

[Bug 368273] Re: Jaunty 9.04 Blind to XP's Shared Network Printer

2009-05-06 Thread Ed Comer
Apport grabbed the crash and I reported it, linking it to existing bug
report 361629. Related bugs are 329974, 344218, 359088, 360524 and
361629. Of interest, I had successfully built a windows shared printer
using the workaround that I described in this bug report, 368273, but
attempted adding a second Windows shared printer while apport was
running. The printer correctly appeared in the dialogue. When I deleted
the printer and tried again, the bug reappeared, this time captured by
apport.

[Bug 359245] Re: Jaunty X highly unstable

2009-05-06 Thread Noel J. Bergman
I'm running 185.18.04 at the moment with Jaunty, and it is still up
after 2 days.

And it died this morning. I did not find anything in the X logs ...
unless you count the following notice (normal):

(II) The server relies on HAL to provide the list of input devices.
If no devices become available, reconfigure HAL or disable
AllowEmptyInput.

The reason I mention it is that I also found a litany of hourly GPF
faults in syslog:

 # grep -F Call Trace syslog*

The first one occurs right after to a message saying: May 6 04:56:05

HAL disappeared? Could these problems all be related to hald aborting,
thus removing the input devices?

I am attaching these hourly call traces.

[Bug 372708] [NEW] gdm background color changes via gdmsetup

2009-05-06 Thread Tuomas Aavikko
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

Setting background color to black via gdmsetup

grep -R -i 00 /etc/gdm/
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf:BackgroundColor=#00
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf:GraphicalThemedColor=#00

One would expect this to take effect after gmd has loaded and before the
wallpaper is loaded.
Still /etc/gdm/PreSession/default states
# Default value
if [ x$BACKCOLOR = x ]; then
BACKCOLOR=#76848F

If I manually change it to black (#00) it works as wanted.

ok, please backup your /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf file
somewhere and replace it with the file attached here. then restart your

[Bug 372609] Re: problem getting emails from web.de

2009-05-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 372712] [NEW] Garbaged printing with black squares after Jaunty Upgrade

2009-05-06 Thread Liuk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: cups

After upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, whenever I print a document on a Ricoh
printer mapped via SMB share which was working perfectly on 8.10, I get
some character replaced by a black square as big as the charatect
(please see the attached scan in pdf to better undrestand what I mean).

Cups version:
cups:
  Installed: 1.3.9-17ubuntu3
  Candidate: 1.3.9-17ubuntu3
  Version table:
 *** 1.3.9-17ubuntu3 0

100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1.3.9-17ubuntu1 0
500 http://it.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages

My difficult is that I don't know exactly which package may be the problem, so
I'm submitting this bug to cups, but may be it is not cups related.
Please let me know how I can provide more info to investigate better the
problem.

Thank you.

[Bug 372702] Re: Ubuntu 9.04 - Flash plugin makes Firefox Crash

2009-05-06 Thread Noel J. Bergman
This video plays fine for me on my Thinkpad T61p.

How did you install flash, and which package(s)? I see that there is a
new flashplugin-installer package. I haven't tried it, since I long
ago I installed the 64 bit version directly from Adobe
(http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/), but you certainly
do not want the old, 32-bit, wrapped, bug-ridden, package on either
Intrepid or Jaunty.

2009-05-06 Thread Jesper de Jong
Simon, are you sure that your patch is correct?

I think it should be sun-java6-plugin, not sun-java6-jre.

sun-java6-jre is just the Java runtime environment, without the browser plug-in.
sun-java6-plugin is the browser plugin, which depends on sun-java6-jre.

[Bug 252571] Re: .desktop file not honoring PATH environment variable

2009-05-06 Thread jisaitua
No, it has no Path entry. I can also put directly Exec=/opt/bin/myapp, but I
don't want to edit *.desktop files lying in /usr/share/applications.
Maybe I need to explain my real scenario: we are using a thinclient environment
where we need to tweak many applications so they just work for the end users
(e.g. sound, cd burning, 3d graphics). Our first approach was to edit the
*.desktop files to run those specific applications with the corresponding tweak
(e.g. use padsp to launch java to have remote sound). That approach doesn't
scale well, because after every system update, some *.desktop files where
replaced with newer ones, and our tweaks get loosed. Our next approach was to
use wrappers for those specific applications. Those wrappers lay in
/opt/bin. So when some one starts java.desktop it really should start
/opt/bin/java (and that runs padsp /usr/bin/java).
BTW: Our current workaround was to edit directly the libkdecore.so.4.2.0
library and replace the hard coded /usr/bin path with /opt/bin (see previous
post for details about the PATH issue). A really nasty hack, but it work for us.

[Bug 343727] Re: [Jaunty] Cannot connect to a Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

2009-05-06 Thread Mihai Olimpiu Cristian
I'm using a PS3 - PPC machine with JAUNTY final PPC with a Microsoft
Notebook 5000 mouse, the only solution is sudo hidd --search. The
problem with this approach is that exactly like in Ubuntu 8.04 or 8.10,
the mouse looses connection after a random amount of time so it's not
really usable (couple of seconds - 40 minutes)!

If I reboot the machine the mouse does not autoreconnect as a user above
me said, maybe every dongle is treated differently?

I think this bug is pretty important, because it affects a majority of
laptop users and PS3 users who ussually use bluetooth peripherals. I
vote for a HIGH on the importance!

[Bug 300227] Re: Digital clock shows HH instead of hour

2009-05-06 Thread RemcoAalbers
I've had the exact same 'problem', running KDE 4 on Fedora 9, showing
'HH:02' in the digital clock.

The problem, I believe, is caused by the locale settings, in my case
'nederlands' (dutch) and somehow the HH identifier is not recognized. Applying
the 12am/pm template and then the 24hrs template fixed the issue for me and the
new template is 'UU:MM:SS' (hours in dutch is uren).
So the template itself is localised. Maybe this helps to fix the issue...

[Bug 335307] Re: Crimean Tatar (Crimean Turkish) locale (crh) is not shown in gdm languages list, even if language support for crh is added

2009-05-06 Thread Martin Pitt
I tried to patch /etc/gdm/locale.conf, config/locale.alias,
debian/locale.conf, and gui/gdmlanguages.c, nothing seems to help. I
can't see another place where languages are defined. This entire locale
system in gdm is totally broken, I hope that the new gdm will have this
cleaned up. Can you take this up with upstream, perhaps?

[Bug 271700] Re: ExpressCard CF adapter limited to UDMA/33

2009-05-06 Thread szefu
Kernel parameters should be passed to the kernel:), which means that it
should be added to the configuration file of your boot manager.

In Ubuntu default boot manager is grub, therefore in default
configuration you'll have to edit '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file. Each entry
looks like, notice the 'libata.force=80c ' added at the end of 'kernel'
line:

title Ubuntu 9.04, kernel 2.6.28-11-generic #Name displayed
in the menu
uuid b50d9919-fc3e-4402-***#ID of the
partition where kernel is located
kernel/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.28-11-generic root=UUID=b50d9919-fc3e-4402-**
ro quiet splash libata.force=80c #kernel file + options!!!
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.28-11-generic
quiet

It is also convenient to add the same option to the line starting with (also
found in '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file)
# defoptions=quiet splash
so changing it to
# defoptions=quiet splash libata.force=80c

(Notice # in the beggining). This is an option for update-grub script,
which is called whenever new kernel is installed, thus will be
automatically added for future updates. This solution should work the
same as the one used by Davis (specifying 'libata' module option in the
'/etc/modprobe.d/options' file), but should also work for statically
compiled 'libata' module, though I don't know if Davis's won't work in
this way too.

[Bug 372717] [NEW] enh: patch for extra NoCursor option

2009-05-06 Thread Erik Devriendt
Public bug reported:

In older versions of Vvnc there was an option to switch off the display of the
mouse cursor. This option was useful when
using Xvnc to provide a view-only image.
This option is not present anymore in the current version of Xvnc.

Here follows a patch that reimplements that option. Feel free to include it in
subsequent versions of Xvnc.
The new option is called 'NoCursor'. The change consists of only 6 lines.

Many thanks.

[Bug 372675] Re: Evolution fails to display new mail in my inbox folder, etc

2009-05-06 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. Also, please answer these questions:
* Is this reproducible?
* If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will greatly aid us in tracking down your problem and resolving
this bug.

If you want to delete your settings they are on ~/.evolution, note if
you deleted them there's no way to recover those, so remember to do a
backup first.
