[Bug 566046] Re: the login password is stored in the user's keyring

2010-04-21 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Obviously we can do an SRU/security update after the fact, but this
does, as Marc pointed out, leave a root escalation path for malware or
applications with a security hole. Perhaps worse is that it allows the
malware call home with the password so that it can be used later to
potentially login to the machine remotely, and then have full shell (and
root if admin) without having to go through all the hoops of doing it
within the malware itself.

Since this feature is not widely used, new in Lucid and seemingly not
well documented in Ubuntu, wouldn't it be better to disable the feature
(ie, use Martin's patch) and then restore the functionality using the
upstream patch in an SRU later? This would plug the escalation issue as
well as avoid a publicly announced USN.

thank you, so it's not really a bug in the GNOME tool but was an user

fixed so no normal user see that dialog

[Bug 567287] Re: libvirtd segfaults in libc-2.11.1.so

2010-04-21 Thread Roberto Resoli
libvirt was not changed (libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu25) , I meant to refer to a
system upgrade done yesterday 2010-04-20 ( thru update-manager). There were
other other updates, including udev.
I noted that udev upgrade (to 151-12 ) was blocked during configuration (post
install script, at restart udev ); I had to kill the postinstall script (that
was happily almost completed) .

May be the problem is udev related? The strange thing is that the
segfault occurs inside libc ...

bye,

[Bug 567855] [NEW] unclear strings for translators, please add comments

2010-04-21 Thread Redmar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: empathy

Translating Empathy I had some troubles understanding the following
strings, it would be great if a comment could be provided for other
translators to clarify these strings:

Show incoming messages in the messaging menu
Located in ../src/empathy-preferences.ui.h:21

The messaging menu is the envelope-shaped icon in Ubuntu, located in
the Indicator-applet

Initially select given account (eg, gabble/jabber/foo_40example_2eorg0)
Located in ../src/empathy-accounts.c:221

This is a command line option for `empathy-accounts`, to open the
Messaging and VoIP Accounts dialog with the given account selected. To
get the account-id you have to run `mc-tool list`

[Bug 565810] Re: packages.medibuntu.org not available

2010-04-21 Thread Paul
I figured out my Ubuntu costs verses my old XP costs.

With Ubuntu I have zero costs for software, OS, virus protection. I do
everything and more with Ubuntu then Xp ever.

Now with XP, I have calculated for the OS, software programs and virus
protection, I have about $850 USD in software alone. Not to mention the
data losses.

With XP I have logged many hours for reinstall and blue screen of
deaths. With Ubuntu, the occasional learning the curve.

@Lionel, Thank you and all the other open source techs for your work.

Some people just don't get it! :) I'll gladly wait for the repo issues
to get repaired and in the meantime be thankful. Anyway, there is a new
disease going on in open source. CUD. Compulsive Upgrade Disorder.

[Bug 557037] Re: snd-asihpi firmware could be included in linux-firmware

2010-04-21 Thread Andy Whitcroft
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+
+ Impact: The firmware is needed for users to be able to use the sound
+ card. Without the firmware a user would have to go without device
+ support or download the firmware from elsewhere.
+
+ How Addressed: Adding the firmware to the linux-firmware package fixes
+ the issue.
+
+ Patch: Please see http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=cndougla/linux-
+ firmware.git;a=commit;h=cf6291f0e49a854819df84b1b64f460dfdb97b86.
+
+ Reproduction: Boot with latest Lucid image on affected hardware. The
+ sound card will not function.
+
+ Regression Potential: Practically zero as the firmware is new and does
+ not overwrite existing files. The firmware will need to be removed from
+ the alsa-firmware package maintained by Medibuntu when this is uploaded,
+ but that's outside of the scope of Ubuntu.
+
+ ===
+

Eliot, Chase, I've started this new bug to track the progress of the
asihpi firmware inclusion. The manufacturer (i e Eliot) has expressed
interest and willingness to help make support out-of-the-box support for

  * there is not a good enough license information for asihpi in alsa-

I observe this problem on a single-core Intel Atom Z520 CPU with
HyperThreading enabled using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid beta 2. Based on that
and on comment #8 here, I edited the bug summary to remove the CPU-
specific part.

** Summary changed:

- Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core
2 Duo even if only 1 core enabled (1 disabled in BIOS)
+ Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick

[Bug 508746] Re: rtl819xE:request firmware fail!

2010-04-21 Thread Andy Whitcroft
** Description changed:

+ SRU Justification:
+
+ Impact: The firmware is needed for users to be able to use the wireless
+ card. Without the firmware a user would have to go without wireless or
+ download the firmware from elsewhere first.
+
+ How Addressed: Adding the firmware to the linux-firmware package fixes
+ the issue.
+
+ Patch: Please see http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git?p=cndougla/linux-
+ firmware.git;a=commit;h=fd2b78a22a30f01d7b86409a0cbe9a820f715f3e.
+
+ Reproduction: Boot with latest Lucid image on affected hardware.
+ Wireless will not function.
+
+ Regression Potential: Practically zero as the firmware is new and does
+ not overwrite existing files.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 519262] Re: Provide ability to Follow a user

2010-04-21 Thread Guilherme Salgado
I've got a branch which adds a 'Follow this person' MessageAction (with
the actual feature only supported by the twitter service for now), but
since that action doesn't make sense on messages from people whom you
already follow, I'm planning to try and exclude the menu item in these
cases.

AIUI it'd be easy to do so by overriding the include() method, but I'm
wondering if it wouldn't be prohibitively expensive given that it might
have to query twitter to find out whether or not you already follow the
message author. This won't be a problem if we already have that
information cached somewhere, though.

[Bug 491778] Re: gnome-display-properties fails to add new monitor

2010-04-21 Thread Ketil Malde
OK. I just fired up System/Preferences/Monitors. It correctly displays
both monitors and the current configuration (the smaller laptop monitor
on top of the larger external one). Unplugged the external monitor's
VGA connection. Hit Detect monitors, and only the laptop monitor
shows, and apply configures screen size to match.

Plugging the VGA back in, the external monitor is automatically
detected, and I immediately get an image on the external monitor as it
was, i.e. larger screen size, and the laptop only showing part of it.

I then removed the external monitor using xrandr --output VGA1 --off.
Fired up Sys/Pref/Monitors. Again the external is detected, but I can't
enable it, and had to use xrandr --output VGA1 --auto to get it to
work again.

The EDID messages are gone from dmesg, it seems.

[Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-04-21 Thread jerrylamos
What steps are used to revert back to version 2.8.0-27 of the xserver-
xorg-video-intel package?

I looked at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReinhardTartler/X/RevertingIntelDriverTo2.4
but couldn't figure out how to use the directions, example where did
0xce90d8983e731f79 come from?

Thanks, Jerry

[Bug 567876] [NEW] xrandr state with two displays fails to resume when waking from suspend

2010-04-21 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

On latest karmic, I use an external monitor in an extended desktop cnfiguration.
This used to work nicely and resume the confguration when waking from suspend.
But recently (ie after updates), the two monitors (laptop LCD and external
monitor) appear in a strange mirrored state when waking from suspend.

xrandr command reports the correct state, even though that is not what
is visibly in effect (both the external and the LCD monitors are showing
the wrong thing).

Running the xrandr command to reconfigure to the correct state has no
effect. Instead, I must switch to some other state using xrandr (or the
gui for it) and then return to the correct (extended) desktop for it to
actually have an effect.
