[Bug 627862] [NEW] USB Mouse freezes randomly but consistently

2010-09-01 Thread Glen Ramsay
Public bug reported:

Mouse (USB) freezes during X session at random intervals (between 1min
and 5 hours apart). Only known workaround is to reboot when it happens.

Mouse only freezes when being used, if the computer is unattended, no
freezing will occur.

It has occurred in Ubuntu 9.10 and now 10.04 (i believe 9.04 was OK).
Ive running the latest updates in the 10.04 build.

I can continue to use the system via the keyboard (USB). I have found
that if two mice are connected before one locks up, the second will
continue to work for a time, but is still susceptible to the above.

Once the mouse stops working, replugging into alternate USB ports or the
same does not fix it.

Ive scanned the following logs after the event and I find no useful info:
* /var/log/Xorg.0.log
* /var/log/messages
* /var/log/daemon.log

The kernel log does not have any info immediately after the event, but after
around two minutes, the following appears:

Sep 1 15:37:06 quantum kernel: [89521.010037] INFO: task khubd:44 blocked for

After the event, running 'lsusb' will block and not return anything
indefinitely.

Which has lead me to believe its a kernel related thing?

Im technically minded, so if you need anything else let me know.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 dev branch.

My empathy version is Empathy 2.31.90

[Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-09-01 Thread Brian Rogers
I found a bug report for the invisible cursor issue. It's bug 614176
here and upstream here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29413

When there's a fix, I'll put up a new kernel including it. I'll be
providing maverick kernels soon as well, so once the cursor bug is
fixed, maverick should become usable for you.

[Bug 539599] Re: [153848.000046] NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (sis190): transmit queue 0 timed out

2010-09-01 Thread tankdriver
I can reproduce this Bug with Ubuntu 10.04.1+updates on a ASUS N90Sc
Notebook.

apport-collect -p linux 539599 does not work for me.

When these Message appears, no Ethernet traffic is possible but all
Gnome Programs are still in online Mode which produces lots of Error
messages (timeouts, host not found)

HowTo get it working again: in Gnome NetworkManager dis- and enable
Networking.

My dmesg is attached. (dmesg_asusn90sc.txt)

[Bug 618155] Re: kernel 2.6.32-24 usb audio device causes cpu lockup

2010-09-01 Thread Mark Ferguson
I narrowed down the issue to the linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-
generic specifically linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-24-generic

Once I removed the alsa backports modules from the 2.6.32-24 kernel the
cpu lockup issue did not occur.

Is this still the correct place for this bug or should I resubmit it
under the linux-backports-modules-2.6.32 package?

[Bug 556372] Re: Please remove the plymouth dependency from mountall / cryptsetup

2010-09-01 Thread Mitchell Smith
I would also like to request the removal of this unnecessary dependancy.

We use Ubuntu Server in a fully virtualized environment, where text
console is used to access our virtual machines.

For this reason, a graphical boot screen is of no use at all, and the
fact we can't just purge this package to keep things tidy is quite
frustrating.

I understand that Ubuntu aims to provide a graphically pleasing
environment, but as an enterprise running hundreds of virtual machines,
we like to run things as bear metal as possible.

Please don't take that choice away from experienced system engineers,
who want to customize their environment for optimal performance and
reliability.

There is no reason not to make this dependancy recommends and maybe
use ubuntu-standard or ubuntu-desktop to ensure the package gets
installed in a tipical install, but there is also no reason to force
users to keep something installed that isn't an essential
requirement.

Please remember that Ubuntu isn't only an attractive desktop
environment, there are also power users out there who want to use it as
a secure, reliable, up-to-date, production ready enterprise server
environment.

I strongly encourage you to consider all the audiences your decision is
impacting, and please reconsider this as an optional dependancy.

Thanks

[Bug 627663] Re: Ubiquity-kde starts partitioning and formatting without verifying

2010-09-01 Thread Evan Dandrea
Jeff,

Can you elaborate on the steps you took to produce this issue?

There are now two partitioning screens. The first screen lets you
choose between resizing, using the entire disk, or manual partitioning.
If you choose resizing, you're brought to a screen that lets you resize
the disk, or press either the use entire disk or use entire
partition buttons to mark the respective data for formatting. However,
it will not format the device until you click on the install button from
that screen. Equally, if you select use entire disk from the main
partitioning screen, you're brought to a screen that shows you that the
entire disk will be used, and it's not until you click on the install
button from that screen that any formatting is done.

So, did you go from the main partitioning page to the resizing option,
click on the format button, and then click on install? Or did you go
from the main partitioning page to the format option, click on next, and
then click on install?

[Bug 627883] [NEW] Two mobile internet sticks conflict

2010-09-01 Thread Martin Wildam
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I have two mobile internet sticks (with each having 2 GB of credit)
for three pretty good reasons:
1. You can't see (easily) how much of the credit is left so when one
is empty I have a backup.
2. Often you are at a location where not all providers get there
with their signals so it might happen that from where you currently
are only one of the two gets a network connection.

I have a friend having two himself for the
same reasons and I think other people do that too.

3. My personal third reason for having two: I want to
help out with testing the mobile internet sticks (I do this on
a regular basis with each new beta coming out).

Since one of the last kernel updates for Ubuntu 10.04 it happens
now, that the autoconnect of the two mobile connections does
not work properly any more (I have set the mobile connections
both to autoconnect). Either one of the two connection configurations
get activated using the wrong modem (eg I plug in the Orange modem
and the connection for Drei gets activated) or network manager totally
refuses to connect after a short attempt.

I cannot really say exactly what happens because there seem to occur
different race conditions when I plug a modem in leading to slightly different
effects when I try it several times.

These are my two modems:
The first one is from Drei:
Bus 001 Device 005: ID 12d1:1003 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E220 HSDPA Modem
/ E270 HSDPA/HSUPA Modem
and the second from Orange:
Bus 001 Device 007: ID 12d1:1001 Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. E620 USB Modem

I guess, network manager somehow does not save the IDs correctly I used
when configuring the connection. However, in gconf-editor I cannot find
an appropriate setting for network connections that tries to be the
modem. What configuration files should I post that you can have a look
or what logfiles in particular are of interest in this particular case?

No that is not a bug, it is the intended design.
The line is an indication/marker of where the icon will be present when dropped.

an artifact/glitch in the graphics.

[Bug 523803] Re: Evince (No protocol specified) + NX floating windows mode

2010-09-01 Thread hedgehog
I had this same experience. PDF files were not opening in evince.
Desktop is a nomachine client connected to neatx server. Example:

$ evince
No protocol specified
Cannot parse arguments: Cannot open display:
$

Workaround, in the same terminal as above:

$ xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
$

Now evince opens PDF files, e.g. from within Chromium.

Speculation that the xhost command should be added to the NX client's Run the
following command:
E.g
xfce4-session xhost +

HTH?

[Bug 441835] Re: Clicking on floppy gives no device media found

To participate to the debate, sure the floppy is obsolete. But think to
elder people who continue to use floppies: my 77 year old father is
using ubuntu for several years and he is more comfortable with floppies
than usb keys. It's like that, to follow new technologies can be very
tiring or uninteresting for elder people...

And think also to poor countries where some people are perhaps happy to
recycle old PCs of rich countries. Perhaps they use floppies ?

And surely a certain number of public schools in rich countries use old
recycled PCs to teach little children.

So floppy technology is osbolete but perhaps more largely used than we
could think. Ubuntu being linux for human beings, my modest opinion is
that it should still support floppies.

Sincerely yours

2010-09-01 Thread ferro
I have made a strange observation, it may be helpful to others:
Since i double boot, i have no more hang. Double boot means: I interrupt the
booting by hitting ctrl+alt+del during the kernel initialization phase, which
causes the machine to reboot, and the second time i let it start normally.
Others may try if that helps on their machine too or not.

[Bug 627889] [NEW] Asks for unexpected password when connecting to broadband

2010-09-01 Thread Martin Emrich
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Since a month or so, NM asks me for some kind of password when I try
to connect to the mobile broadband connection (Vodafone Germany).

It is not the PIN for the SIM (which is deactivated), the SIM itself
works without problems in other devices.

I'll attach a screenshot for the dialog.

[Bug 577560] Re: can't connect to WPA2 Entreprise using PEAP and MSCHAPv2

2010-09-01 Thread Lixin Chin
I'm seeing the same problem, with plasma-widget-networkmanagement. An
identical issue seems to be affecting network-manager-kde
(knetworkmanager).

But it works perfectly when using the gnome network manager (network-
manager-gnome).

My network isn't using a CA Cert, could that be causing a problem? It
brings an are you sure prompt from the gnome network manager, but
nothing in the kde versions.

Why this is a duplicate of bug #505452? What are the technical reasons?

Thanks,

[Bug 435930] Re: Guest session does not warn about temporary nature of files

2010-09-01 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Please see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1558808

In that tutorial I address the need to inform the guests in advance, but
I also let them know that they actually can save files persistently.
Whether people prefer to keep that latter opportunity 'secret' or not, I
believe that the method described in the tutorial is close to an
implementable solution to this bug.

[Bug 627904] [NEW] Yo Frankie installs blender to play

2010-09-01 Thread ubuntosaure
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yofrankie

Hi,

When I install the game it adds blender.
I've seen packages that do not require blender for play.

There are two versions (CSE BGE):
http://www.yofrankie.org/download/

If you download the version BGE you can play without blender.
wget http://download.blender.org/apricot/yofrankie_1_1b_bge.zip
unzip http://download.blender.org/apricot/yofrankie_1_1b_bge.zip
cd yofrankie_1_1b_bge
./yofrankie-linux-i386.bin

Thanks

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

Testing Xubuntu i386 Maverick Beta Candidate (20100831.1)

[Bug 627903] [NEW] port backend get_available() to use plain http instead of restfulclient

2010-09-01 Thread Michael Vogt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

The software-center-agent is changing:

  - We'll be using the view instead of the API call to access the public
list of apps, as we can serve that over plain http. The url for the
list of available apps is /apps/en/ubuntu/series/architecture/, for
 example http://sc.staging.ubuntu.com/apps/en/ubuntu/maverick/i386/.
When you've switched the desktop app's code we'll be removing the
application set from the API altogether.

This needs to be ported in the app.
