Issues:
When setting wallpaper (via pcmanfm) or looking at png/jpeg (in GPicView) which
contains some kind of gradient/fading color, there's a very noticeable and very
ugly banding or striping instead of a smooth transition/blending between
colors. For example, with the default background in Lubuntu (
/usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png ), background set
by default via pcmanfm looks like it is being viewed in 256 color, rather than
16 or 24 bit.

The same wallpaper, same file/size, used by lxdm (LXDE Desktop Manager)
looks absolutely fine at login stage, but not on the background which is
set by pcmanfm, which one sees once logged in.

# ls -l /usr/share/lxdm/themes/Lubuntu/wall.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264722 2011-01-16 20:03
/usr/share/lxdm/themes/Lubuntu/wall.png
# ls -l /usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264722 2011-01-16 20:03
/usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png

The same banding issue appears when opening the files in GPicView.
However, it looks absolutely fine in `feh` (image viewer/background
setter), in gimp, and in firefox4.

The behavior is not specific to these backgrounds, as I've looked at
several other wallpapers w/ gradients that are supposed to look fine,
and the issue persists with the said applications (pcmanfm, GPicView).
The behavior is also not specific to the laptop's (1024x768) LCD screen,
as I've connected a Samsung LCD (SyncMaster 920NW) to the laptop and
seen the same exact degree of gradient-color-banding on it as well.

Upon further testing, the issue is exacerbated when I set the
DefaultDepth 24 in xorg.conf (and 24bpp depth confirmed from Xorg log).
That is, after stop/start lxdm - which was okay at 16bpp - it would then
show the severe banding/striping of gradient colors as well. This lead
me to believe is not an application specific bug, but an issue with
xorg's neomagic video driver.

Regardless of using a custom xorg.conf or conf-less Xorg (which defaults
to 16bpp depth), the issue remains. I've tried disabling various
neomagic-specific acceleration options (as detailed in `man neomagic`)
one by one, tried disabling acceleration altogether, tried starting X
with and without neofb framebuffer-console driver loaded (though I
cannot use Option ShadowFB - which is disabled by default - in xorg.conf
because I get blank screen with it enabled when neofb is also loaded.)
Tried using DirectColor rather than TrueColor for the screen's visual,
but that does not really work correctly on this chipset (neither in 16
or 24 bit depth).

Could this be a duplicate of

I don't see the XSession errors Ben Stanley reported though... But I

[Bug 780085] [NEW] Keyboard language detected during netboot setup is ignored after installation

2011-05-09 Thread xor
Public bug reported:

I used the netboot.tar.gz to install Ubuntu natty via PXE.
The netboot method uses the debian style installer which allows the user to
detect the Keyboard by pressing some keys. It successfully detected my
de:nodeadkeys layout.

I then installed Ubuntu desktop from tasksel.

After the installation finished, logging in with the user which was
created during setup showed that the user has a US keyboard configured
while the system keyboard is properly configured as German: The password
of the user contains a z which would be swapped with y on the German
keyboard, log-in still works if I don't manually type an y So the
log-in manager uses the German layout while the actual user as default
US layout.

[Bug 778296] Re: lirc not working correctly on 2.6.38 kernel

2011-05-09 Thread Jarod Wilson
There are two perfectly valid ways to use the mceusb driver, one is via
the default lirc driver and /dev/lirc0, the other is using devinput
and the mceusb device's input layer event device (or better, its symlink
in /dev/input/by-id/). The current problem with trying to use devinput
mode is that the lirc initscript is disabling all the in-kernel
decoders, upon which devinput mode relies to get raw IR scancodes
translated into Linux input layer event keycodes.

The simple fix for this sort of thing I threw into the Fedora lirc
initscripts was to NOT twiddle /sys/class/rc/rc*/protocols when the lirc
driver mode is set to devinput. I'd suggest doing the same here.

2011-05-09 Thread Jarod Wilson
OP: Note also though: devinput mode with the windows media center rc-6
keymap loaded isn't going to work at all with a TiVo remote. You need to
either load a tivo keymap (which I don't think exists until kernel
2.6.39 or .40), or just use the /dev/lirc0 method with the TiVo
lircd.conf you were previously using.

[Bug 780097] [NEW] Installing simple-ccsm leads to a proposed removal of the entire Unity desktop

2011-05-09 Thread jovan dragisic
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: simple-ccsm

So I tried to install simple-ccsm in Natty, thorugh the CLI. Apt was
informing me about broken packages. Thinking something went wrong with
my manual installations, I tried to reconfigure with dpkg and fix with
apt-get. No avail. So I opened Synaptic, and try to install it there,
whereupon I was informed that compiz, compiz-core, everything related to
compiz, as well as Unity itself, would be removed.

To reproduce:
1. open Synaptic
2. look for simple-ccsm
3. mark for installing, and see what it offers to remove
4. do not apply the changes unless you wanna resort to desperate measures

Screenshot appended.

[Bug 780094] [NEW] unity top panel corrupted, most applets invisible but work

2011-05-09 Thread indium
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

unity 3.8.12-0ubuntu1 corrupts the upper panel after some (random) time
when using the system (opening/closing/moving windows, etc). Just
updated to Natty on my MBP 6,2. See desktop image (attachment). The left
part of the panel contains a random part of a just-closed chromium-
browser window. The rest is 'transparent', but when clicking on some
spot on this bar, the menus do appear (wireless, logout, date/time,
etc).

The system is also sometime un-responsive for approx 1-2 seconds (mouse
gets stuck)

[Bug 780093] [NEW] No way to align 4096/4k-HDDs properly

2011-05-09 Thread Grizzly
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

I just got myself a WD-2TB-Green 2TB hard disk drive without checking the
forums first, implicating that problems from the
renaissance of computing, e.i. the last decade should not matter any more. I
was naive again.

EARS-Type drives have two annoying features: for their capacity, they
are transitional 512-Byte-Sector internally and 4096 Byte sectors
externally.

Palimpsest informs me, that the partition is misaligned by 512 bytes -
which is natural, as the default partition start in linux is 0x63 - 512
Bytes short. It does not offer further help how to fix this - neither
does gparted.

Performance is ugly, like 40 MB/s instead of =100 MB/s.

I also learn from the forums again that like some notebook drives back
in 2007/2008 the EARS is parking every 8 seconds and woken up every 20s
by the kernel when used as system drive. So either fuddling around with
some obscure WDD-DOS tool or hoping that smartmontool's smartclt -s 242
/dev/sdX will save the day.

Luckily, you only buy large terabyte green-style drives for
archiving/data server. Raiding those makes it even worse, as there is
only a message of mkfs.xfs that 4096k-Sectors are not supported by XFS.
Good that my system is on the nice 40gb cheap and fast intel v-series
ssd. No parking probs noted here.

As a result, my 2-disk stripe does 50 MB/sec where it should to in
between 200-100 MB/sec for large files.

It is so obvious when copying from a standard-raid0 with 2 samsung blues:
0 MB for 2 secs, then 300 MB for a sec then nothing again like
| | | | in gkrellm. Sad.

And someone clever posted, that for zfs (or zfs-fuse) there is no way even to
tell right now how things are there.
- ZFS-fuse should be ok though when getting xfs-based large files as
containers for devs.

Please (upstream involved)
- fix gparted, parted, fdisk, palimpsest to recognize 4k-sector drives and
adjust partition boundaries accordingly upon creation - at least add an option
to do so
- fix xfs / mdadm to handle 4k striped arrays
- Include a disable head parking somewhere graphically for newbies.

I havent looked into btrfs, though.

To keep blood pressure low ;-) haha - I am not going into the TLER problem, in
my case I would rather want my drive to report failed too soon then the other
way round - meaning it would be nice, to enable tler. What have they thought at
wdd? Greens are not for running a system from - just for backup and
mid-performance raids. And they take away the most importand things... sad.
Next time it will be Korea again :-)

[Bug 772834] Re: Asus U43F with 11.04 freeze on suspend

2011-05-09 Thread for.i.am.root
The last version of Ubuntu to include legacy GRUB was 9.04 Jaunty.
Those directions don't work with GRUB 2 (i.e. you should NOT edit the
menu manually).

Not quite sure what to do with GRUB 2. Just started using the newer
Ubuntu's. Haven't upgraded since Jaunty and am still learning GRUB 2.

Mine is a U43F 64 bit 10.04. No suspend at all. Close the lid and the
screen goes black but can't get it to suspend. Open and it immediately
goes to the locked screen window.

No hibernate support either.

To my understanding the newer versions of Ubuntu no longer support
custom DSDT patching. Is this accurate?

Thanks!

I'm seeing these semaphore errors with a backup-script that uses lvm2
snapshots after upgrading to natty.

I think this bug should be reopened and moved to the proper package
(lvm2?) and it should probably be merged with bug #753541

[Bug 554963] Re: Nautilus gives Could not display computer:///. error when unmounting a volume for the first time for that login

2011-05-09 Thread raymulder
have 11.04 installed from the release iso and this bug is still there.
It happens with me when I unmount a DVD disk.
The problem seems to be Nautilus which cannot find a new directory to open
after you have unmounted the disk.
This does not happen to a USB device or maybe it is only the first time you
remove a drive from the computer.
Will try some more permutations.

  | | | | in gkrellm.

+
+ To keep blood pressure low ;-) haha - I am not going into the TLER problem,
in my case I would rather want my drive to report failed too soon then the
other way round - meaning it would be nice, to enable tler. What have they
thought at wdd? Greens are not for running a system from - just for backup and
mid-performance raids. And they take away the most importand things... sad.
+ Next time it will be Korea again :-)

[Bug 780092] [NEW] No SINGLE Monitor support

2011-05-09 Thread LisandroVCR
Public bug reported:

When I plug second monitor it sometimes detects it and sometimes not.
Even when it detects it, it doesn't offer the correct resolutions to
choose from and the only way to use it is to select one well below of
what the monitor supports. Randomly it offers the correct resolutions
for a little while.

I have experienced this bug in two Laptops one using a Samsung monitor
model number: lr23ws and another using a 40 Samsung HDTV

I have read online that other people are having the same issue with
different monitors of different brands.

Ubuntu works perfectly on my laptop as long as I don't try to plug a
monitor but not everyone in the world uses laptops I have a Desktop in
which I simply can't install Ubuntu because it doesn't detect my
monitor. And I cannot use my $200 monitor with my laptop because it
isn't detected neither.

I have experienced this bug since Ubuntu 9.10. I have reported it many
times and it's still broken, the problem is not with multi-monitor
support but actually with making work a single monitor at all. We are
not in the era of punched cards, not being able to connect a monitor
should have more priority than what little is being given.

[Bug 780085] Re: Keyboard language detected during netboot setup is ignored after installation

2011-05-09 Thread xor
** Description changed:

- I used the netboot.tar.gz to install Ubuntu natty via PXE.
+ I used the netboot.tar.gz to install Ubuntu natty via PXE.
The netboot method uses the debian style installer which allows the user to
detect the Keyboard by pressing some keys. It successfully detected my
de:nodeadkeys layout.

I then installed Ubuntu desktop from tasksel.

- After the installation finished, logging in with the user which was
- created during setup showed that the user has a US keyboard configured
- while the system keyboard is properly configured as German: The password
- of the user contains a z which would be swapped with y on the German
- keyboard, log-in still works if I don't manually type an y So the
- log-in manager uses the German layout while the actual user as default
- US layout.
+ After the installation finished, logging in with the user which was created
during setup showed that the user has a US keyboard configured.
+ Further, the setup also ignored the keyboard layout while configuring the
user: A character in the users' password was exchanged with a different one.

[Bug 778083] Re: Switching workspaces does not always redraw everything necessary

2011-05-09 Thread Sven Berkvens-Matthijsse
More corruption, not only window borders. I've attached an image where
part of a pop-up-context-menu in Thunderbird is not being drawn.

Another thing: when the corruption happens in the Gnome Panel, as in the
image that I've already attached in #5, it's the actual desktop
background that gets displayed instead of the Gnome Panel. In the
example image of #5, it looks black, but choosing another background
reveals that it's the background that's being displayed instead of the
Gnome Panel.

[Bug 754146] Re: DisplayPort-based external monitor cannot be enabled

2011-05-09 Thread Adar Dembo
There's a fix for the kernel panic in some of the drm-intel-next
branches (commit 31acbcc408f412d1ba73765b846c38642be553c3).

Note that in my experience DisplayPort is still pretty much broken on
the Natty kernel even with this fix applied.

[Bug 780103] [NEW] MT940 import does not work after upgrading

2011-05-09 Thread mcglnx
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnucash

All,
After upgrading to Natty, MT940 import does not work anymore - the import
screen simply blocks forever.

I've checked-out and recompiled the trunk code, as well as the 2.4.5 branch and
found the same issue.
It looks to be a regression.

Is there any non regression testing before rolling out a new version?

Thanks,
D

[Bug 779849] Re: dbus-daemon consumes 100% CPU

2011-05-09 Thread Robert Clark
I am experiencing the same issue. I have the latest KDE/natty installs,
and I believe this 100% CPU saturation was triggered, when I was moving
between folders in Thunderbird 3.10, thunderbird had hung. Yup, sure
enough I just killed thunderbird, and dbus-daemon is no longer at 100%
CPU utilization. After starting thunderbird the dbus-daemon process goes
back to 100% CPU utilization. I have tried this 3 times, and the
starting/running of thunderbird is clearly related to the 100 CPU
utilization of the dbus-daemon process. I'm going to reboot the system
now, and I will update this bug report when the system comes back up.

Here is the output from top:

Tasks: 175 total, 3 running, 172 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
