[Bug 780074] [NEW] [neomagic] Gradient color banding/striping on Dell Latitude CPt/CPx
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-neomagic Running lubuntu-desktop on Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) xserver-xorg-video-neomagic: 1:1.2.5-1ubuntu3 # lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Neomagic Corporation NM2360 [MagicMedia 256ZX] # xrandr -q xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x60060.0 56.0 640x48060.0 320x24060.0 # grep visual /var/log/Xorg.0.log [41.018] (==) NEOMAGIC(0): Default visual is TrueColor # grep Depth /var/log/Xorg.0.log [41.018] (**) NEOMAGIC(0): Depth 16, (--) framebuffer bpp 16 # grep DPI /var/log/Xorg.0.log [41.065] (==) NEOMAGIC(0): DPI set to (96, 96) # glxinfo | grep direct direct rendering: Yes --- Issues: When setting wallpaper (via pcmanfm) or looking at png/jpeg (in GPicView) which contains some kind of gradient/fading color, there's a very noticeable and very ugly banding or striping instead of a smooth transition/blending between colors. For example, with the default background in Lubuntu ( /usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png ), background set by default via pcmanfm looks like it is being viewed in 256 color, rather than 16 or 24 bit. The same wallpaper, same file/size, used by lxdm (LXDE Desktop Manager) looks absolutely fine at login stage, but not on the background which is set by pcmanfm, which one sees once logged in. # ls -l /usr/share/lxdm/themes/Lubuntu/wall.png -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264722 2011-01-16 20:03 /usr/share/lxdm/themes/Lubuntu/wall.png # ls -l /usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 264722 2011-01-16 20:03 /usr/share/lubuntu/wallpapers/lubuntu-default-wallpaper.png The same banding issue appears when opening the files in GPicView. However, it looks absolutely fine in `feh` (image viewer/background setter), in gimp, and in firefox4. The behavior is not specific to these backgrounds, as I've looked at several other wallpapers w/ gradients that are supposed to look fine, and the issue persists with the said applications (pcmanfm, GPicView). The behavior is also not specific to the laptop's (1024x768) LCD screen, as I've connected a Samsung LCD (SyncMaster 920NW) to the laptop and seen the same exact degree of gradient-color-banding on it as well. Upon further testing, the issue is exacerbated when I set the DefaultDepth 24 in xorg.conf (and 24bpp depth confirmed from Xorg log). That is, after stop/start lxdm - which was okay at 16bpp - it would then show the severe banding/striping of gradient colors as well. This lead me to believe is not an application specific bug, but an issue with xorg's neomagic video driver. Regardless of using a custom xorg.conf or conf-less Xorg (which defaults to 16bpp depth), the issue remains. I've tried disabling various neomagic-specific acceleration options (as detailed in `man neomagic`) one by one, tried disabling acceleration altogether, tried starting X with and without neofb framebuffer-console driver loaded (though I cannot use Option ShadowFB - which is disabled by default - in xorg.conf because I get blank screen with it enabled when neofb is also loaded.) Tried using DirectColor rather than TrueColor for the screen's visual, but that does not really work correctly on this chipset (neither in 16 or 24 bit depth). ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-neomagic (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780074 Title: [neomagic] Gradient color banding/striping on Dell Latitude CPt/CPx -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 780085] [NEW] Keyboard language detected during netboot setup is ignored after installation
Public bug reported: I used the netboot.tar.gz to install Ubuntu natty via PXE. The netboot method uses the debian style installer which allows the user to detect the Keyboard by pressing some keys. It successfully detected my de:nodeadkeys layout. I then installed Ubuntu desktop from tasksel. After the installation finished, logging in with the user which was created during setup showed that the user has a US keyboard configured while the system keyboard is properly configured as German: The password of the user contains a z which would be swapped with y on the German keyboard, log-in still works if I don't manually type an y So the log-in manager uses the German layout while the actual user as default US layout. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780085 Title: Keyboard language detected during netboot setup is ignored after installation -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 778296] Re: lirc not working correctly on 2.6.38 kernel
There are two perfectly valid ways to use the mceusb driver, one is via the default lirc driver and /dev/lirc0, the other is using devinput and the mceusb device's input layer event device (or better, its symlink in /dev/input/by-id/). The current problem with trying to use devinput mode is that the lirc initscript is disabling all the in-kernel decoders, upon which devinput mode relies to get raw IR scancodes translated into Linux input layer event keycodes. The simple fix for this sort of thing I threw into the Fedora lirc initscripts was to NOT twiddle /sys/class/rc/rc*/protocols when the lirc driver mode is set to devinput. I'd suggest doing the same here. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778296 Title: lirc not working correctly on 2.6.38 kernel -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 778296] Re: lirc not working correctly on 2.6.38 kernel
OP: Note also though: devinput mode with the windows media center rc-6 keymap loaded isn't going to work at all with a TiVo remote. You need to either load a tivo keymap (which I don't think exists until kernel 2.6.39 or .40), or just use the /dev/lirc0 method with the TiVo lircd.conf you were previously using.

[Bug 780093] [NEW] No way to align 4096/4k-HDDs properly
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gparted I just got myself a WD-2TB-Green 2TB hard disk drive without checking the forums first, implicating that problems from the renaissance of computing, e.i. the last decade should not matter any more. I was naive again. EARS-Type drives have two annoying features: for their capacity, they are transitional 512-Byte-Sector internally and 4096 Byte sectors externally. [Bug 772834] Re: Asus U43F with 11.04 freeze on suspend
The last version of Ubuntu to include legacy GRUB was 9.04 Jaunty. Those directions don't work with GRUB 2 (i.e. you should NOT edit the menu manually). Not quite sure what to do with GRUB 2. Just started using the newer Ubuntu's. Haven't upgraded since Jaunty and am still learning GRUB 2. Mine is a U43F 64 bit 10.04. No suspend at all. Close the lid and the screen goes black but can't get it to suspend. Open and it immediately goes to the locked screen window. No hibernate support either. To my understanding the newer versions of Ubuntu no longer support custom DSDT patching. Is this accurate? [Bug 779849] Re: dbus-daemon consumes 100% CPU
I am experiencing the same issue. I have the latest KDE/natty installs, and I believe this 100% CPU saturation was triggered, when I was moving between folders in Thunderbird 3.10, thunderbird had hung. Yup, sure enough I just killed thunderbird, and dbus-daemon is no longer at 100% CPU utilization. After starting thunderbird the dbus-daemon process goes back to 100% CPU utilization. I have tried this 3 times, and the starting/running of thunderbird is clearly related to the 100 CPU utilization of the dbus-daemon process. I'm going to reboot the system now, and I will update this bug report when the system comes back up.
