[Bug 730052] Re: Documentation for installing phpMyAdmin incomplete

2011-03-09 Thread Adam Sommer
Thanks for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better. You
shouldn't have to add the Include /etc/phpmyadmin/apache.conf line to
/etc/apache2/apache2.conf because that file is symlinked to
/etc/apache2/conf.d, and apache2 is restarted as part of the phpmyadmin
package install.

Can you try the Server Guide instructions again, and confirm this is the
case for you. On a clean install of Ubuntu 10.10 that is the case for
me.

I'll mark this bug as Incomplete until we hear back from you.

[Bug 693906] Re: The language used in the OpenSSH Server documentation page is misleading or incorrect.

2011-03-09 Thread Adam Sommer
I agree with Colin, I think the terms fit with the rest of the
documentation. I don't think separating the OpenSSH section into client
and host/server would make much sense considering the length and depth
of the section. The Server Guide to this point has been written with
people new to Ubuntu in mind to help them get up and running with Ubuntu
Server as quickly as possible. Therefore subjects tend to not go into
great detail especially for topics that have much more in depth
documentation elsewhere on the net.

Marking as Won't Fix.

Thank you for your feedback,
Adam

Re: [Bug 463684] Re: openldap sections in ubuntu server guide not updated for packages in karmic

2010-10-22 Thread Adam Sommer
Can you try purging slapd using apt-get purge slapd ? The issue is that
using reconfigure will, I believe, leave modules loaded in slapd. Thus when
you follow the instructions in the Server Guide you will need to account for
loaded modules, and modify the instructions appropriately. There will be
errors in /var/log/syslog pointing you in the right directions.

Thanks for reporting your issues, you can also find help in #ubuntu-server

[Bug 609177] Re: Apport Hook

Thanks for the reviews. Attached is a patch against the latest version.
I put the file in the apache2.2-common.install file because the
description of apache2-common has: This package contains the

To me the apport hook seems like a support script. But I'm a little
fuzzy about when an apport hook should be in a source package versus a

[Bug 596713] Re: Undefined confusing reference

2010-08-18 Thread Adam Sommer
Thanks for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better. I've
added a note to the bottom of that section that I hope is more clear:

The file share named [share] and the path /srv/samba/share are just
examples.
Adjust the share and path names to fit your environment. It is a good idea
to name a share after a directory on the
file system. Another example would be a share name of [qa] with a path of
/srv/samba/qa/

[Bug 605212] Re: OpenVPN server guide missing package

2010-08-18 Thread Adam Sommer
Thanks jelmer for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better...
apologies for taking so long to get back to you.

At the top of the section there is a sentence about setting up a bridge
prior to following the instructions:

This guide will assume that one VPN node, the server in this case, has a
bridge interface configured. For more information on
setting up a bridge see the section called “Bridging”.

Do you think the link to the Bridging section insufficient? I ask
because I think it may be confusing to add the bridge-utils package to
the install command. If a bridge interface is already configured, then
the package will already be installed.

Thanks,
Adam

[Bug 569599] Re: KVM Networking doesn't mention the need for qemu to be installed

Hello,

I've added a note about installing the qemu package. Since
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ is a wiki, anyone can edit a page to
add, subtract, clarify, etc... a bug doesn't need to be filed. Just a
friendly FYI.

Thanks,

Arjan, can you copy your /var/lib/ldap/DB_CONFIG to the
/var/lib/ldap/access_log directory? Also, make sure that the directory
exists, but I think it should or you'd have a different error.

Anyway, try:

  sudo cp /var/lib/ldap/DB_CONFIG /var/lib/ldap/access_log
  sudo /etc/init.d/slapd start

Thanks

Arjan, can you copy your /var/lib/ldap/DB_CONFIG to the
/var/lib/ldap/access_log directory? Also, make sure that the directory
exists, but I think it should or you'd have a different error.

Anyway, try:

  sudo cp /var/lib/ldap/DB_CONFIG /var/lib/ldap/access_log
  sudo /etc/init.d/slapd start

Thanks

I can confirm that the issue is still in Maverick. I've added a
subsection to the Amavisd-new section of the Server Guide to add the
bayes 0 check from Sylvain's patch on comment #26.

If this information solves the bug please let me know. You can see the
new section by checking out the ubuntu-docs source, or checking:
http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/mail-filtering.html

I believe the site is updated from the latest source daily so it may not
be there until tomorrow.

fixed, I said the pdf is fixed but the SAME INFO in the html variant of
the same manual is still the outdated version, that isn't correct any
more. I fear that most people use the html, not the pdf, so they get the
wrong info and can't get samba running.

The core issue is the dysfunction of the Ubuntu Doc team. I don't meant
to say this in a negative way, all members of the team are purely voluntary
and don't always have the time to update all aspects of the h.u.c site, or
to update currently released version of the docs.

Basically the HTML version will be updated when the ubuntu-docs package is
updated... I will also try to update the HTML server guide as soon as
possible.

Thanks again for your feedback and input.

The PDF was created from the latest content in the Lucid branch. Some

[Bug 585208] Re: slapd becomes non-responsive after several weeks runtime

2010-05-26 Thread Adam Sommer
I did look through the attached files, but like you said it doesn't seem
to tell you much. I suggested running slapd in debug mode knowing that
most of the output won't be needed, but when slapd stops responding
there should be clear errors in the output... or at least something to
point in the right direction. I realize that running slapd like that
isn't the most clean think to do, but I don't have a better idea.

Setting the status to incomplete doesn't close the bug, it simply means
that to move forward more information from the poster is required. We
truly wish to help you solve this bug, so if it takes a few weeks,
months, etc that isn't a problem.

Thanks,
Adam

Thanks for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better. Just to
double check... there is nothing in /var/log/syslog when slapd stops
responding?

Another idea might be to run slapd in a terminal with the -d -1 option

[Bug 582812] Re: ldapsearch -y option does not work

2010-05-24 Thread Adam Sommer
Thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better. Did you
create the /etc/ldap.secrets file using a text editor such as Vim or
nano? If so the editor probably added a CR or LF to the end of the
line. If there is such characters the ldap utilities won't recognize
the string as a legit password.

Can you try creating /etc/ldap.secrets using:

  sudo sh -c echo -n 'secret' /etc/ldap.secrets

Replacing 'secret' with your correct password. Then retry your
ldapsearch commands. Using echo with the -n will not add new line
characters.

the libs/global.ent file. My thought is that there are less links then
there are strings using distro-rev outside of URLs, so I vote for a
manual change. Wouldn't think that it'd take too long.

[Bug 365153] Re: OpenLDAP Server sudo auth-client-config -a -p lac_ldap

2010-05-16 Thread Adam Sommer
Thanks for reporting this bug, and helping make Ubuntu better. Ubuntu
8.10 is end of life and no longer supported, see:
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-announce/2010-March/000130.html

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? The recent Server Guide releases
have used:

  sudo auth-client-config -t nss -p lac_ldap

So I believe this bug has been solved, but please confirm that that is
the case.

Thanks,
Adam
