[Bug 927952] Re: When I press the Print Screen button, it will not appear in Save Screenshot window.

2012-02-08 Thread Alan Bell
this appears to be the offending commit
http://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-screenshot/commit/?id=3bbc1e158fd58ec7f4f984f6d3c15ec95e65a035
can we patch it back in? The dialog with a preview is a lovely feature, way
better than silently putting it on the clipboard or silently saving it.

[Bug 929038] [NEW] alt+prtscr does not screenshot the current window when using HUD

2012-02-08 Thread Alan Bell

[Bug 928496] [NEW] alt+f2 does not find accurately typed things

2012-02-07 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

in unity doing alt+f2 to run a command offers suggestions, but takes them away
if you get them right and there is a longer matching alternative.
mumbl offers mumble but mumble offers mumble-overlay

onboar offers onboard but onboard offers onboard-settings

evinc offers evince, but evince offers evince-previewer

so in each case actually typing the command properly means something
related but useless launches, preventing good typists who know what they
are doing from successfully using unity. Similar issue exists with the
HUD.

[Bug 765819] Re: Launcher - Make Launcher left of screen reveal more responsive and less prone to false positives

2011-12-22 Thread Alan Bell
Personally I set the unity icon size to 32px and the launcher to never
hide, I lose a few horizontal pixels, but it is much easier to use
without the launcher popping in and out every time I want to use
something on the left side of an application. I am unconvinced that an
autohiding launcher is the best default to have, it is on the left
because the modern widescreen aspect ratio is in fact a shortscreen and
vertical pixels are at a premium, however horizontal pixels are cheap
and the launcher is useful to look at even when you don't want to
interact with it and launch something or switch to something. Having it
permanently visible makes it a lot easier to move the mouse to the icon
I want to click rather than move the mouse to bring out the launcher,
then look up and down for the icon I want, then move towards it, then
bring out the launcher again because it vanished whilst I was using it!

[Bug 762699] Re: Unity launcher and panel are not zoomable with Enhanced Zoom Desktop

2011-12-22 Thread Alan Bell
The levels of importance have a specific and defined meaning
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance

From a user perspective I can see this looks like something that has been
broken, but I can also see that from an architectural perspective it is a
feature that Nux has never had. Either way it needs fixing, but is a
non-trivial architectural problem.
I think it might be possible to increase the size of the unity elements as you
zoom. Not zooming the unity elements as such, just making them bigger. If this
is synchronised with the zoom level it might be quite a nice effect.

[Bug 906246] Re: Option to 'discard on shutdown' is greyed out.

2011-12-19 Thread Alan Bell
looks like this is because the remaining free space is less than
MIN_PERSISTENCE, 1024MB
http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~usb-creator-hackers/usb-creator/trunk/view/head:/usbcreator/misc.py#L21

this seems rather a large minimum, and rather a poor user experience, in
particular it doesn't let the user choose not to do a persistence file
and doesn't move the radio button to indicate one won't be created.

[Bug 855532] Re: Keyboard shotcut - Add keyboard shortcut hint overlay that is displayed when a user presses and holds the Super key

the overlay is also broken for sticky keys, in the universal access
settings turn on sticky keys which allows people to use modifiers and
shortcut keys whilst pressing one key at a time, hit super and hold to
bring up the overlay, then try and get rid of it. The thing just stays
there, just as unreadable as before to orca, but now obscuring and
blurring applications for sighted users.

[Bug 855532] Re: Add keyboard shortcut hint overlay that is displayed when a user presses and holds the Super key

2011-12-11 Thread Alan Bell
Keyboard shortcuts are more useful to screen reader users than people
who can use a mouse. This feature would be really useful to an orca
user, however sadly this use-case does not appear to have been
considered in the design, as this shortcut screen is only visible whilst
pressing the super key there does not appear to be an opportunity to put
focus on the panel and read it. Please can we stop breaking
accessibility by not even thinking about it in the design phase, it is
massively harder to fix it afterwards than it is to design it in from
the start.

[Bug 855532] Re: Add keyboard shortcut hint overlay that is displayed when a user presses and holds the Super key

2011-12-11 Thread Alan Bell
Having built the overlay and tested with orca I can confirm that this
is broken by design for non-visual users of Ubuntu. You can't navigate
to the overlay because it won't accept focus and only displays when the
super key is held down, so using the orca modifier keys to attempt to
navigate won't work. Is there a way the design can be modified such that
screen reader users can access this information that is particularly
valuable to these users?

[Bug 885544] Re: Pressing OS Key shows Lens in FullScreen Apps/Games

2011-12-03 Thread Alan Bell
I wonder if it would be possible to specify a particular workspace as
not having the launcher and panel, so you could launch your game thing
over there and not have the launcher pop up over it, or ctrl+alt+cursors
to a different workspace (perhaps one with a fullscreen gedit) and hit
the super key and have the launcher appear.

[Bug 860118] Re: Wrong version of espeak-data at: ~/espeak-data Version 0x14404 (expects 0x14300)

2011-09-26 Thread Alan Bell
there appears to be an updated version of espeakedit, the important
thing is that espeak and espeak edit should be version matched
http://espeak.sourceforge.net/test/latest.html

in Natty, espeak is Version: 1.44.05-1ubuntu1
espeakedit is Version: 1.43.03-1

to get espeakedit working against the espeak in natty then it would need to be
upgraded to 1.44

[Bug 781385] Re: Ubiquity GTK should have useful accessible names set in the Glade .ui files instead of using the variable names

2011-09-25 Thread Alan Bell
I temporarily commented out the add_widget bit that breaks the labels on a live
CD and discovered that one of the descriptions is Upgrade Ubuntu to 11.04

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/oneiric/ubiquity/oneiric/view/head:/gui/gtk/stepPartAsk.ui#L233

It is hard to properly test the screen reader install if it is reading
out stuff that it shouldn't do on the real install which is masking
problems that we should really be fixing

[Bug 546922] Re: [lucid] Some suggestions with new gfxboot artwork

2011-09-24 Thread Alan Bell
so you now put the live CD in, and just wait. After a minute or so the
live CD boots and you hear some drums, this isn't at the full session,
it is at the first part of the ubiquity installer and you have a choice
then of try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu, if you press ctrl+s for
speech then it starts orca. Focus is on the Orca window so you have to
alt-tab to get back to the installer window and press one of the
buttons.

[Bug 851694] Re: application icons in apps lens are all called button

2011-09-24 Thread Alan Bell
ok, latest updates are a tiny improvement! The category now correctly
reads the number of more results available, it also correctly reads the
names of the applications in the top row which were visible with the
category collapsed. if you expand the category it still reads the
category as if it were collapsed and all the applications below the top
row are still called button

[Bug 781385] Re: Ubiquity GTK should have useful accessible names set in the Glade .ui files instead of using the variable names

2011-09-24 Thread Alan Bell
Can we stop doing this now or do automated tests need to run up to
release? I would like to have the opportunity to test the installer with
the correct sound output so we can document it prior to release, there
is no point doing videos of the install process if it is reading out the
variable names rather than the text it should say because that would be
misleading. I would point out that the only way the LDTP tests work at
all is by leveraging the work that has been put into accessibility, so
breaking accessibility just to make the testing easier is a bit harsh.
Could the tests not use the regular accessible names to find widgets?

[Bug 749671] Re: Detect keyboard layout is invisible to orca

2011-09-23 Thread Alan Bell
If the install is done while connected to the internet it will attempt
to figure out where you are and what keyboard you are using, and it gets
it right for me (en_GB) if you don't let it connect to the internet you
get the US keyboard with no £ and @ and the wrong way round. We can
update the a11y documentation to strongly recommend installing with a
network connection as a workaround for this.

[Bug 749691] Re: Ubiquity slideshow HTML content! is the last part of the screen reader install

it reads out percentages now (badly - but that is a separate issue.)

[Bug 856793] Re: On timezone page, city list is not accessible

2011-09-23 Thread Alan Bell
pretty hard to do it with just the keyboard to be honest, you need a
mouse and good hand-eye coordination to get your city. If you do the
install with an active net connection it will guess where you are, and
it gets it right for me.

[Bug 856773] Re: Welcome Screen: Cannot reach 'release notes' link with keyboard only.

2011-09-23 Thread Alan Bell
the lable with the link in it refuses focus and isn't in the tab order.
Oddly enough the release notes URL goes to Ubuntu.com and not the
release notes, so the link is pretty useless for everyone right now!

[Bug 852583] [NEW] Orca does not pronounce Oneiric Ocelot very well

2011-09-17 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

Orca uses speech dispatcher and the espeak engine by default and can include
pronunciation guides to get words said more correctly.
spd-say oneiric ocelot
sounds like one iric oh slot but
spd-say on-eer-ric osselot sounds about right, comparing to 28:15 of the
UDS-O keynote http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjyNTCHVyxs

so it would be great to pre-populate the dictionary with
oneiric = on-eer-ric
ocelot = osselot

[Bug 851694] [NEW] application icons in apps lens are all called button

2011-09-16 Thread Alan Bell
Public bug reported:

using Unity with the included Orca screenreader, all the buttons in the app
lens are just button and curiously a few are unlabled at all.
http://people.ubuntu.com/~alanbell/unityorca.ogv
They should expose the application name so that orca can read them out.
