[Bug 796076] Re: When run as root [gksudo gedit ] gedit tries to open a 2nd 'untitled document 1'

By the way:
That doesn't happen in Arch, so it seems to be an Ubuntu Issue, not a Gnome
issue.

2013-04-27 Thread Bazon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1173551 ***

Public bug reported:

when started evolution from terminal, the error message is
"Speicherzugriffsfehler (Speicherabzug geschrieben)" which is translated
"segmentation fault" as far as I know.

It happens only on one of my two computers running 13.04.
this is probably a duplicate of

[Bug 1173551] Re: Evolution crashes on opening

2013-04-27 Thread Bazon
Same here. In fact, I only need to open Evolution to add other Google-
Sub-Calendars, so they are displayed in my Gnome-Shell-Panel. So if
someone knows a workaround for adding other Google-Sub-Calendars
without using evolution, I would be happy about that.

[Bug 973778] Re: Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager

2013-03-13 Thread Bazon
After two more months of testing I can confirm my #35 :
this doesn't happen with the XFCE notification area, only with the Ubuntu
notification area (which is used by default).

So I propose: switch the default notification area to the XFCE
notification area for xubuntu-desktop.

Maybe this observation is usefull:
I started using _only_ the XFCE notification area (see
file:///usr/share/doc/xfce4-panel/html/C/systray.html ) and _not_ the other
Ubuntu notification area (where Unity indicators will be placed).
Since then, I hadn't this bugs problem anymore. (I hope it will stay like
this...)

[Bug 1060098] [NEW] Assistan window appears although online-accounts are set

2012-10-02 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

When I try to launch Contacts (directly or by clicking a contact in the
gnome-shell overview in search-display-mode), the "Kontakte einrichten"
dialogue (I suppose "set up contacts" in english) appears, although my
Gmail-Account is already set in "Online accounts". There is no way to
get rid of that assistant window (as it only has the two buttons: "use
online account" or "use local account", and then I click "use online
account", I only get to the online-accounts window where I already made
my settings), and therefore the actual contacts are never reached, only
always that assistant window.

[Bug 1049028] Re: Unable to create gmail account

2012-10-01 Thread Bazon
It is possible to integrate Google Calendar and Contacts anyway:

For the calendar, add an "on the web" calendar and enter the ical-adress
of your Google calendar. If you have dates with e-mail-notification, you
get an endless series of warning popups saying evolution calendar
doesn't support e-mail notifications for dates, so you have to kill it
and the process "evolution-calendar-factory".

Google contacts can be integrated the normal way, so I suppose it's
really about Google calendar here.

"Verbindung ist geschlossen" = "connection is closed"
"Die Ressource ist zur Zeit nicht verfügbar" = "the resource is not available
right now"
(I wish there still was a language selection in LightDM or GDM... :-( )

Thanks for informing about the possibility to uncheck the two checkboxes. I
tried to add the calender manually (I want the calender in the Gnome-Shell
top-panel!), evolution is showing that google calendar is opened in the
statusbar, but this statusbar-status never changes.
I did $ grep evolution ~/.xsession-errors in that state, after trying to add
the calendar manually.

[Bug 738757] Re: spindown settings lost on pm-suspend indirectly affects powernap power savings

2012-09-30 Thread Bazon
I have an at least similar issue on 12.10 quantal:
I want to spin down my external USB drive /dev/sdc as fast as possible:
in /etc/hdparm.conf:

/dev/sdc {
spindown_time = 1
}

that works, although I get

$ sudo hdparm -C /dev/sdc
/dev/sdc:
SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: f0 00 01 00 50 40 00 0a 00 00 00 00 00 1d
00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00
 drive state is: unknown

but after resume from suspend, it doesn't work anymore.

my workaround is
/etc/pm/sleep.d/20-hdparm

#!/bin/bash
case "$1" in
thaw|resume)
hdparm -S 1 /dev/sdc
;;

esac

and that works, anyway, spindown settings shouldn't get lost on
suspend/resume in the first place.

So what is most reasonable?

[Bug 1040436] [NEW] Privacy Tab: Items in blacklisted Ubuntu One picture upload folder appear although blacklisted

2012-08-22 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

This is about gnome-control-center activity-log-manager.
I file it here in gnome-control-center and not in activity-log-manager because
I didn't have the activity-log-manager standalone package installed.

What happens:
I have the Ubuntu One App for Android which automatically uploads my photos to
the default folder for that, ~/Pictures - GT-I9100 (for my device.)
As I don't want to appear that photos via zeitgeist, I blacklisted that folder
in gnome-control-center activity-log-manager. Anyway, uploaded photos appear
via zeitgeist, even before I opened them! the files being uploaded there is
enough. (e.g. viewable via gnome-activity-journal or just in the dash.)
Other blacklisted folders work as they should.

What should happen:
Also for Ubuntu One uploads to a folder like ~/Pictures - GT-I9100 blacklisting
in the privacy tab should work.

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 1037177] [NEW] tangerine adds as a start on session program twice

2012-08-15 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

Installing tangerine results in two tangerine startups at session start:

1.
Name: Tangerine Media Sharing
command: tangerine
description: Share your music with close friends

2.
Name: No name
command: tangerine
description:

This results in two running processes which could lead to double songs on some
clients.
So it would be usefull not to have this doubled tangerine entry as a start on
Sessionstart.

[Bug 1037167] [NEW] Rhythmbox DAAP Server doesn't work with iTunes 9.2.1 for PPC as client

2012-08-15 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

Using Rhythmbox 2.96 as a DAAP server with iTunes 9.2.1 for PPC (on OSX 10.4)
doesn't work:
The share-name is shown in iTunes, but selecting it doesn't establish a
connection: no "mount" symbol, no display of shared song.
(using rhythmbox as a client works.)

It can't at least be only an iTunes problem, as Tangerine as a Server +
the exact same iTunes as a client works without any problems.

(And this particular version of iTunes is important, as it is the most
reason version for the Power PC (PPC) architecture on OSX 10.4.)

ProblemType: Bug

Package: rhythmbox 2.96-0ubuntu4.1

[Bug 973778] Re: Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager

2012-08-10 Thread Bazon
OK, I got the problem again.
So your commands give me:
xfce4-power-manager --quit
(no output message)

xfce4-power-manager --no-daemon
"Energieverwaltung für Xfce: Eine andere Energieverwaltung läuft bereits"
which means translatet:
"power manager for fxce: an other power manager is now running".

and in fact, as I looked in my task-manager, there was still an instance of
xfce4-power-manager running.
After killing that instance,

xfce4-power-manager --no-daemon

gave me the output:
"(xfce4-power-manager:2226): xfce4-power-manager-WARNING **: could not map
keysym 1008ffa8 to keycode"

but in fact, the power manager is now running and working.

[Bug 863663] Re: Gnome-shell and ambiance theme icon issue

2012-07-29 Thread Bazon
Thanks for publishing this fix! I only like to add, the standard icon theme in
gnome-shell after an ubuntu installation is ubuntu-mono-dark and not
Humanity-Dark, so you have to apply the fix on that folders.
And isn't the low res OSD volume icon the same issue in unity as well?

[Bug 973778] [NEW] Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager

2012-04-04 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

What happens:

When I try to access the Xubuntu Power Manager (through Xubuntu Settings
/ Settings Manager), I get first a blank settings window and then this
error message:

"Unable to connect to Xfce Power Manager
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken. "

typing
xfce4-power-manager
or
xfce4-power-manager-settings
in the terminal leads to: nothing. nothing happens, not even a error message.

So I'm not able to make any power settings in Xubuntu.

What is expected to happen:
Being able to use power manager settings

[Bug 965921] Re: gnome-shell most keyboard shortcuts not working

2012-03-31 Thread Bazon
Yes, there are two workarounds:

1. If you know the matching command line, just make your own shortcut with the
keyboard shortcut GUI. I made that for CTRL-Alt-T and gnome-terminal.
2. If you don't know the matching command line (e.g. for "show activities"),
you can use dconf-editor to set keybindings in org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings.

I only got one problem with that: what's the name in dconf for the right
super key? (one of my keyboards doesn't have a left super key.)

ego wrote:

it wouldn't in any case. I'm a teacher and I use 6 workspaces, each for
a specific task (2 for each of 2 subjects, 1 for school in general, and
one private), it is clear which workspace is dedicated to which task, as
they are always the same. For me, that makes it very fast and easy to
get there I want. With the old unity setup, that was not possible.

[Bug 689733] Re: Application icons should only display windows from the current workspace in the window spread

2012-03-15 Thread Bazon
@Ego:
The Aim of workspaces is the SEPARATION of different tasks. I really don't like
to see things going on on other workspaces, they are distracting me. And I also
hate switching the workspace accidentally by clicking on an icon belonging to
another workspace.

but ok, users are different.

that-fore, i would suppose to include an option, but unfortunately, I think we
are at the wrong address @ canonical for such things... :-(
(their aim is to reduce the number of options, whyever..)

Public bug reported:

This is confusing.

in german: "Fensterauswahl initiieren" - don't know what it's called in

Good to see something moves here.
But why wait so long?
As described in #7, there IS a solution for this issue yet, it's just changing
some default settings.

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-17 Thread Bazon
interesting link, Sebastien.
however, a random pick of the first 10 bugs listed in "unity" (all importance
"high" or "critical") shows 7 of them were opened by John Lea from Canonical's
Design team and those 10 bugs have 29 affected users in total, which makes
about 3 affected users per bug. Even your own "won't fix" bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/683170 has a higher number of affected
users (34).
The total amount of affected users in the top 10 "won't fix" unity bugs is 555,
which makes about 56 per bug.
And there aren't only the "won't fix" bugs, there are also the left behind
"undecided" bugs (like my one:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/734253)
Instead, it is cared about things like window shadows having a border of 20px
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/light-themes/+bug/804328)...
doesn't make me s sure contact to users is very tight...

however, of course I appreciate work on real application bugs, thanks
for that and keep on the good work.

If the phenomena Mark describes is right, it's a matter of selective
perception.
So maybe it would be helpful to post some links to cases were canonical DID
actually fixed usability issues by user request in order to calm the worried

(But on the other hand, that won't calm too much as long as my pets issue isn't
fixed [to stay in Marks words] ;-)
I think, that is the core of many complainants: reduced reliability. some
things that worked before, doesn't work now. that shouldn't happen IMHO. and
yes, blame Gnome, too.)

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-08 Thread Bazon
by the way, mint is doing it exactly right IMHO:
"What we’re sure of, is that if people aren’t given the choice they will be
frustrated and our vision of an Operating System is that your computer should
work for you and make you feel comfortable. So with this in mind, Gnome 3 in
Linux Mint 12 needs to let you interact with your computer in two different
ways: the traditional way, and the new way, and it’s up to you to decide which
way you want to use. "
http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1851
This is so true!
further:
"For this, we developed “MGSE” (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions), which is a
desktop layer on top of Gnome 3 that makes it possible for you to use Gnome 3
in a traditional way. You can disable all components within MGSE to get a pure
Gnome 3 experience, or you can enable all of them to get a Gnome 3 desktop that
is similar to what you’ve been using before. Of course you can also pick and
only enable the components you like to design your own desktop."
The Mint Gnome Shell Extensions seems to re a really good way to give the user
the choice between traditional and new GUI methods, the user is in full control.
The reactions there http://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=1851 are also very positive.

@M.S.#39:

>> Also, there are many GUI elements in ubuntu which toggle show/hide by
click without changing appearance (@#20), e.g. most indicators.

>Which indicators are you referring to?

Pretty much every indicator in Unity has this this 'one click: show, next
click: hide' behaviour:
indicator for network-manager, for sound, for bluetooth, indicator-me,
indicator-messages, indicator for dropbox...
...even the dash and the workspace switcher (button in the launcher!) have this
show/hide behaviour.

so for me, it seems to be more consistent, if the other buttons in the
launcher also would provide show/hide functionality.

And about my doubt concerning the usability testings:
I'm really curious whether someone could tell me, which change in the GUI
caused the change from
october-report:
 http://design.canonical.com/2010/11/usability-testing-of-unity/ concerning
multitasking
("Multitasking on Unity is disconnected and difficult at times")
to april-report:
 http://design.canonical.com/2011/04/unity-benchmark-usability-april-2011/
("Multitasking: (...) This is fixed.")

I tested each version of Unity and at least I've seen no change in the way
multitasking was handled.
(And multitasking in Unity IS one of those need-many-more-clicks-than-before
things which really bother in Unity...)

But after all, I'd like to say:
Don't get me wrong, I'm still a fan of Ubuntu. I'm only confused by its
direction change, but now I'm personally happy with Xunbuntu, Compiz and the
exelent ambiance design.
Thanks for that anyway. :-)

[Bug 882274] Re: Community engagement is broken

2011-11-01 Thread Bazon
At least for me, this kind of communication (including mainly the "won't
fix" attitude) had one advantage: I learned relatively fast that I had
to say "goodbye" to mainstream ubuntu. (I'm using now xubuntu + compiz
in ambiance flavour.)

Speaking of usability tests:
I see at least two problems regarding the community and communication within
the usability tests:

1. No ubuntu user was included. Only 13 Windows users, 1 Mac user and 1 user
who uses both Windows and MacOSX.
http://design.canonical.com/2010/11/usability-testing-of-unity/
--> Unity is in fact not developed for the ubuntu community.

2. Between the usability tests, progress was announced although there was no
change of the interface regarding those issues, only the aims were set in a way
much easier to achieve.
--> issues were not solved, but talked away.
(I wrote about this in detail there:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10971464&postcount=25 )

One might say now: Who cares about the old ubuntu community? Canonical is
obviously trying to get a new one!
Well, that will be a lot harder then they continue losing multiplicaors, people
who recommend ubuntu and help installing it.
(i can't recommend it any more, because it has no got default setting any more.
[for me, the main problem in Unity is bad windows- and workspace-management.])
Therefore, a better communication in both ways would be really useful.

And speaking of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ayatana-design/+bug/733349 (minimize
window by clicking on the launcher):
I'm not really pleased with the given explanations yet. What's the problem in
adding ONE more option in CCSM which seems to have hundreds of settings (which
I enjoy very much) yet? This seems to be not consequent.
Also, there are many GUI elements in ubuntu which toggle show/hide by click
without changing appearance (@#20), e.g. most indicators.
(I don't want to revert the decision, I don't use Unity any more and so I don't
care, I only want to show reasons for 733349 are reasonable...)

[Bug 878293] [NEW] bugs following use of "show desktop": ALL windows unminimize later and are not focusable by clicking their titlebar

2011-10-19 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

steps to reproduce:
1. open a couple of windows.
2. use "show desktop" (e.g. by CTRL+ALT+d)) - all windows minimize (OK)
3. hit a symbol matching to a window on the launcher.
expected behaviour: only the selected window unminimizes, other windows stay
minimized
observed behaviour: ALL windows unminimize. (that's bad if you use the "show
desktop" option to clean up your view.)
4. try to minimize a unfocused window by hitting its minimize button
expected behaviour: the unfocused background window minimizes
observed behaviour: nothing happens, the window doesn't even get focus.

[Bug 835972] [NEW] after resume the "Disconnected - you are now offline" notification doesn't disappear

Public bug reported:

Observed behaviour:
When I resume from standby, the "Disconnected - you are now offline"

[Bug 235768] Re: Enhanced zoom not working with twinview enabled

2011-08-12 Thread Bazon
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 162396 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/162396

I had the same issue in natty. For me, it was solved by not using the xorg.conf
(by renaming it) and setting twinview with the program disper and running
"disper -c".
(the parameter -c clones the output on both devices)

I comment here (and not in bug #162396) because here solutions were
proposed and I'm not so sure about the duplicate status: for me, the
mouse didn't jump to the other screen, but simply disappeared.

Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Make sure you have audio files in your home folder
2. Make sure you haven't played one of them
3. In the unity launcher, rightclick "Files & Folders" and leftclick "Audio"
4. You get the result as mentioned: "There are no audio files in your Home

This is simply wrong. Only none of them has been played yet, at least
not with a zeitgeist activating method.

(a) Really show files of the Music folder OR
(b) Display a correct message, as maybe: "You haven't played any Music files
opened with Nautilus yet."

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize Application's Windows upon clicking it's Launcher Icon

2011-06-24 Thread Bazon
@#135 about more or less technical users:

If you (Canonical) don't respect the needs of the technical users, you possibly
make it more difficult to reach the 200 Million users goal: The technical users
are multiplicatiors for other, less technical, "normal" users: They tell them
about the possibility of another OS, they can convince them about the
advantages of this OS, they can help to install and to manage the OS.
In the past, I recommended Ubuntu to friends and family and convinced quite
some of them to use Ubuntu.
But now, I can't recommend Ubuntu any more. It is not just this bug, but this
is symptomatic: My main argument for choosing Ubuntu was the great ability to
configure it to personal needs. (One of the first things I showed to new users
was the great flexibility of the old gnome panel.)
Now this argument is lost (unless you use another DE, which I do, but I'm not
sure whether this is a good choice for less technical users...),
Canonical-Ubuntu became a less-is-more,-take-it-or-leave-it thing, just like
Mac OS.

Conclusion:
If you focus too much on less technical users, you risk to lose both technical
and less technical users.

[Bug 723861] Re: Right clicking on the desktop still displays the “Create Launcher...” option.

2011-06-23 Thread Bazon
Using "create launcher" on desktop is an easy way to create a custom
Unity-launcher:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/13758/how-can-i-edit-create-new-launcher-items-in-unity-by-hand
(see second answer which starts with "This is a method without editing config
files and without root privileges.
First create the Launcher on the Desktop (only temporary)")

Will there be another easy way to create custom launchers (including
command line options) without this option?

This one is nasty. I mean, Evolution is the DEFAULT mail client in

[Bug 781485] [NEW] after successful autologin, gnome-keyring-prompt keeps appearing on and on

2011-05-11 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-keyring

I use autologin to start a unity session, so after system start
gnome-keyring-prompt appears to ask for the login key. so far behaviour is
normal.
since a few days, sometimes gnome-keyring-prompt keeps appearing direct after
entering the correct password on and on. it never stops. although the password
obviously works: e.g. evolution can access my mail password successful.

[Bug 779911] [NEW] evolution initial settings not accessable on a 1024x600 netbook

2011-05-09 Thread Bazon
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: evolution

steps to reproduce:

1. if you already have a configured evolution, create a new user to reproduce
the initial settings dialog.
2. log in with the new user and start evolution
3. the now opening configuration dialog is too big, so that the "next" button
on the bottom is not visible. One only can access it by hitting "Tab" blind.
Trying to maximize that window is also no working solution, as the window then
jumps on click so that each click goes to the void.

This is especially bad, as evolution is ubuntus default e-mail
application. configuring it is one of the first steps for a new user, it
would be good, if frustration would be avoided then.

(this happened at least with german language settings)

[Bug 733349] Re: Minimize windows upon clicking application's launcher

2011-05-07 Thread Bazon
@Ed Lin:

1. Why not discuss it here? The bug has "opinion" status, meaning:
"Opinion says: there’s a difference of opinion around this bug and people are
free to continue the discussion, but the project or package maintainers need to
move to other work and are considering the issue closed."
http://blog.launchpad.net/bug-tracking/new-bugs-status-opinion

2. Sorry, saying "a Dock CAN'T" do that sounds somewhat ignorant to me:
(a) As said before, many Docks just have that function. Try Cairo-Dock e.g.
(b) And even if there was no Dock having that function, right at this page many
useful suggestions were made how to do it.

[Bug 769085] Re: firfox always maximized when opened

2011-05-07 Thread Bazon
PS:
My opinion: Please give an option somewhere to change this. I like Firefox to
start exactly the size I used it last time, and I don't like maximized windows.

This is a more general version of this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/754214

I think this kind of design decision is called "zero configuration"

Eh, they actually do, or at least offer that option. E.g. the fabulous
Cairo-Dock.

Is there a workaround? Maybe a Compiz setting?
This is really annoying!

[Bug 777953] Re: Google Contacts don't work in Evolution: "Cannot authenticate user: Invalid query"

2011-05-05 Thread Bazon
It's different from
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evolution-data-server/+bug/755043 ,
because I have only about 200 contacts and I don't get a single one.
Also, the Error message is not "timeout", but "Cannot authenticate user:
Invalid query"
