Not exactly. I see Manoj tried to get it working back in March with the

[Bug 751471] Re: [Lenovo T410] Microphone mute key does not fuction

2011-04-21 Thread Jerone Young
@Herton
   With your kernel. The microphone mute button does send a keycode. Here
are some of the messages you added:

[ 1088.567385] hotkey_notify_hotkey: process scancode == 0x001a
[ 1088.567390] tpacpi_input_send_key_masked: process scancode == 0x001a
[ 1088.567393] tpacpi_input_send_key: got keycode == 0x021b

  Though the at least for the T410 it does not expose the led. You would
probably need to enable config option CONFIG_THINKPAD_ACPI_UNSAFE_LEDS.

[Bug 751471] Re: [Lenovo T410] Microphone mute key does not fuction

2011-04-20 Thread Jerone Young
@Herton
  That's right. I forgot it actually sends a acpi event. Which
thinkpad-acpi is catches then sending the KEY_UNKNOWN keycode. The link you
pointed out to the patch whould just label the acpi event in thinkpad-acpi but
still would not help solving the whole problem.

 Getting a generic key to map to is the first step to solving
the issue. Though there does seem to be little interest from the
community to create  it.

@Herton
 Also a bit of history at the time as well there was a lot of
disscussion of if thinkpad-acpi should try and do the muting and unmuting.
Basically trying to do this at the kernel level. Though nothing ever panned out
with this discussion.

IMO the optimal way was something to send a keycode and
let userspace react to it.

[Bug 751471] Re: [Lenovo T410] Microphone mute key does not fuction

2011-04-19 Thread Jerone Young
Hey guys,
  The microphone mute button does send a keycode. When you press it you
will see this in dmesg:

keyboard: can't emulate rawmode for keycode 240

  The reason for this is there is nothing for udev to map it to ..
let me explain.

  This is not a hardware key. It just a key that sends a keycode. So under
Windows Lenovo has a daemon that does 2 things when it sees this key is pressed:
1) Mutes/unmutes Microphone mixer
2) Lights/unlights the LED on the Microphone button.

   To properly support this Linux has to do the same thing. I tried last
year to do a lot of this work. One way to go about properly supporting under
Linux:
1) Define a common key for microphone mute . Here is what I tried a
while back:
 http://markmail.org/thread/ho3t4cau2amzoxu4

2) Once something is agreeded on in the kernel then, userspace input.h
(/usr/include/linux/input.h)
will have to be updated as well.

3) Then add this key to keymap for lenovo thinkpads in udev ..(see
/usr/udev/keymaps/module-lenovo
/usr/udev/keymaps/lenovo-thinkpad-usb-keyboard-trackpoint)

4) To add LED support you will need to expose it through thinkpad-acpi
module. I think basic support is
 already there. But it does not expose it by default currently.

5) Add support in Gnome Settings Daemon or write your own daemon. It
will listen for the the agreed upon
common keycode for microphone mute. Also if you want the LED to
turn on and off you will need
to turn it on and off via interface exposed by thinkpad-acpi via
sysfs.

[Bug 643643] [NEW] Casper unable to load livefs when installing/using over usb cd/dvd rom

2010-09-20 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

When trying to install Ubuntu using a usb dvd rom. Casper appears to be
stuck. If you choose Install Ubuntu or Try Ubuntu without installing
from the first screen. It begins to load and you see the purple usplash
screen with the orange activity indicator. But that is it. The orange
activity indicator keeps going and it never brings up the installer or
livefs.

The usb dvd rom is showing constant activity as something is trying to
be found on the disc.

The same disc works fine on a built in dvd/cdrom drive.

Turning off the splash screen the last message that shows up on the
screen before things start to get stuck is:

Begin: Creating debconf-communicate mechanism

Then you get drive a bunch of i/o errors squashfs errors.

This is using 10.10 build 9/19.

 The work around works for the most part when installing over usb cd/dvd rom.
You nolonger have a bunch of i/o error messages and you are now prompted to
press ENTER.

The only thing you do not have plymouth splash screen. It's in all text.

The major issue is solved by the upstart fix.

[Bug 632581] Re: Unity should facilitate end-user mapping of the Super key

@Tony
The problem with option #1 is we would need lawyers to qualify if it is
doable using this method to meet requirement for OEMs. This would be timely
process, and more then likely would not make it for the 10.10 cut off.

[Bug 637358] Re: [11.04] Unable or properly identify Blu Ray recordable disks (BD-R)

2010-09-15 Thread Jerone Young
@Martin
   This is correct. According to Wikipeidia the media I'm putting in there
is, a BD-R, is only writeable once. Don't have a BD-RE yet. But that is the
read/write version.

But it says the disk type 00 .. which I'm not sure if that is
supposed to be differnent for a BD-R. If not can mark invalid for udev.

[Bug 632581] Re: Unity should facilitate end-user mapping of the Super key

2010-09-13 Thread Jerone Young
Baseline requirement:
 - Need ability to disable default mapping of super (windows) key

Full Featured requirement:
  - GUI to allow end user to map key back to function

We mainly need a way to meet the baseline requirement. Currently I'm only aware
of one function that Unity uses the super key for. That is to display number
that will allow a user to press a number key to take action on a launcher. I
demonstrate it in this video (at 19 sec .. quality a little bad):
http://people.canonical.com/~jerone/launchpad/unity/IMG_1115.MOV

Can someone provide if there are any other uses of the Super Key by
Unity or a page of Unity key mappings?

[Bug 632526] [NEW] Unity should allow for 3 rows of text below program shortcuts or programs

2010-09-07 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Currently Unity is cutting off text for programs shortcuts. Standard
Gnome allows for 3 rows of text. Unity should do the same to allow
standard names used (that work with Gnome Desktop) to display fine with
Unity. This is critical as many shortcuts have translations that take up
more then one line

[Bug 632581] [NEW] Unity cannot map the Super (Windows) key

2010-09-07 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Currently Unity is mapping the Windows key to display numbers for icons.

There are big issues doing this:

1) Video Out hotkeys are now sending Super (Windows) + P
*When video out hotkey is pressed Unity

This relates to this bug (which is being fixed upstream to support Super
(Windows) + P):
https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/539477

I also have a video (sorry for the quality) here to demonstrate:
http://people.canonical.com/~jerone/launchpad/unity/IMG_1115.MOV

2) OEMs who ship Windows cannot ship Unity if it maps the Windows (Super Key)
and the keyboard has Windows Logo.
* The summary here is that if you are an OEM you cannot ship any other
software, but Windows that uses the Windows Key, if the Microsoft Windows Logo
is on the keyboard.

So if OEM does not have the Windows Logo on the keyboard (where super
is) it is fine. But all OEMs at this point in time have Windows Logo on
the keyboard.

* If you would like more information on this please contact Pat in

[Bug 632591] [NEW] Oem-config/Installer top task bar needs to have volume power button on the right to be consitent with Uquity Ubuntu Dekstop Experience

2010-09-07 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: casper

This has been observed by OEM customers with oem-config, thought the
Installer is using the same bar.

The top bar is inconsitent with the end user experience. When a user is
in Ubuntu Desktop or Unity. The Power Volume buttons are located on
the right.

Currently in oem-config the installer they are located on the left.

This is seen as inconsistent and will can cause user confusion for less
advanced users.

2010-08-23 Thread Jerone Young
@Robert
 The issue as with bug 554569 is that the screen is not being properly
cut on by the i915 driver. So the backlight is on..but no graphics are coming
to the screen at all.

 We have seen this issue with other displays as well in the past
with the i915 driver. This may just need a tweak to the same fix to
handle these displays also.

Oh also if you put the latest Maverick on a usb stick .. once the usb
stick has been created .. you have to edit syslinux/syslinux.cfg and
remove ui from the lbeginning of the last line.

** Also affects: oem-priority
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New
