Same here on a Lenovo Thinkpad W510. The brightness sliider in settings does not work as well as the hardware keys. I am using Nvidia drivers. Still not working. Well, it seems as if the bug's back. In addition, I am also not able to adjust the volume nor the keyboard backlight via my laptop's function keys. Same here. The brightness controls on my MacBook Pro stopped working. The pop-up that usually shows the brightness level does not longer pop up, and the keys that adjust the brightness don't work anymore. Yes, I have problem with it too. My temporary solution is: sudo setpci -s 00:02.0 F4.B=xx where 00:02.0 is my device (maybe works for you too) and xx is value in hex from 0 to ff - it works fine for me I am create short script for console and for gui too, and create alias to ~/.bashrc for run that script.
