Boost package plans for Karmic

2009-05-29 Thread Scott Kitterman
At UDS I was asked to look into which boost packages we should target for
Karmic. Currently we have boost (1.34), boost1.35, boost1.37, boost1.38, and
boost-defaults in Karmic.

For Main, the boost version for Karmic will be boost1.38. It's been promoted
to main and updating has already started. Boost1.38 is also Debian's target
boost for squeeze and so this should be the last boost transition until after
Squeeze releases.

Debian is transitioning to an unversioned libboost-dev package provided by
boost-defaults. We need to have this version for packages we sync from
Debian, but in Ubuntu packages are preferred not to build depend on it. The
default version set by this package is 1.38.

libboost-dev is provided by boost (1.34) and boost-defaults (1.38.1). The
archive version of the binary is 1.38.1. This means that packages that depend
on the old (1.34) version of libboost-dev will likely fail to build.

In Universe/Multiverse, the goal is to transition all packages to 1.38
(preferably) or alternately 1.37.

Debian has already removed 1.35 from Unstable. We should remove boost (1.34)
and boost1.35 during Karmic and it would de good to get 1.37 removed

Unseeded Universe/Multiverse Final Freeze Schedule

2009-10-15 Thread Scott Kitterman
The factors that drive final freeze for packages that are not on any ISO image
have changed somewhat from previous releases, so we can freeze slightly later.

The motu-release team have conferred and here's the plan:

Currently, continue uploads before. MOTU Release approval is only needed for
feature changes (FFe). Since the archive is frozen, the release team will
manually push these uploads through without a detailed review.

Universe final freeze will be at 1200UTC on Sunday, 25 October. After that
time, MOTU Release will approve all uploads. As with Main, you do not need
get approval before upload, we can review in the upload queue, but no uploads
will be accepted without MOTU Release review and approval. Important bugfixes
(particularly FTBFS fixes) are still encouraged.

The deadline for an upload to be approved by MOTU Release will be 1200UTC on
Tuesday, 27 October. If very critical fixes are identified after that, there
is
a small chance the Ubuntu Release team might approve it, but it is more likely
that it will be directed to the proposed queue.

Throughout this process, we will be monitoring the progress of the buildd
queues. If needed, we may start deferring uploads to proposed earlier to
ensure that all builds are tried/finished on all architectures before the
archive is locked for the release.

Supported Python version for Lucid

2009-12-14 Thread Scott Kitterman
The only supported Python version in Lucid is 2.6. While the python2.5
package is still present, building third party modules and extensions is not
supported (similar to python2.4 in Karmic).

Final Freeze timeline for unseeded packages in Universe/Multiverse

2010-09-21 Thread Scott Kitterman
Final freeze for unseeded Universe/Multiverse packages will start at Noon UTC
on October 6. After that, all uploads will be reviewed by the release team.
The final deadline for uploading unseeded Universe/Multiverse packages will be
Noon UTC on October 9. After that the archive will be completely frozen
(modulo unexpected emergencies).

Universe still needs lots of work on FTBFS, RC bugs, and NBS, please keep
working on it until the deadline:

Feature Freeze in effect for Vivid Vervet (to be 15.04)

2015-02-19 Thread Scott Kitterman
As of about 12 hours ago, Feature Freeze is in effect for Vivid (15.04),
leading up to the release in April.

Don't fret if you have One Last Feature to get uploaded, and don't
panic and upload it untested today just to try to beat the clock. We
would rather see a feature freeze exception bug and a well-tested
upload than something rushed to beat a deadline.

That said, the vast majority of people should be winding down new
feature development now and focusing on bug fixes and polish to make
15.04 yet another great release come April.

On behalf of the Ubuntu Release Team,

Scott K
