To make this change persistent you must edit file:
 /boot/grub/menu.lst

 ** Package changed: ubuntu = xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (Ubuntu)

 ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-openchrome (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

In my system ( 9.10 ) there is no menu.lst.

Try to enable New mode switch by adding Option ModeSwitchMethod new to your
xorg.conf file
Is it working correctly for your chipset?

Then attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

Attach your Xorg.0.log file.

Try to build the latest openchrome revision and replace the file

I had this problem too, but I fixed it by re-installing GRUB. I had
previously installed GRUB on another partition a few weeks before
upgrading to Karmic, and because of that, my computer kept booting into
the old kernel instead of the new one. It also fixed some other problems
I was having with Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425372] Re: GeForce 7050 PV does not work on karmic alpha-5 - shows video corruption

2009-11-18 Thread Andreas Kostyrka
Installed via standard AMD64 Karmic CD.

Normal mode = out of range.
Safe mode = 800x600

Opened Terminal:
sudo -i
apt-get install nvidia-glx-185
nvidia-xconfig
restart gdm

Running with 1920x1080 now.

So this is not critical as it can be worked around, OTOH it gives a bad
first impression on rather common hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484387] [NEW] kopete crashes a parallel Xsession

2009-11-18 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: kdenetwork

There are two users on the system logged in parallel (via K-Menu -
Change User).

Sometimes one of the two sessions crash. It seems like this is related
to kopete as the latest crash happened when the other user started
kopete. Both users have themselves on the kopete buddy list and receive
notification when they go online. It may also be realted to the KDE
notification / event handling system.

The crashes result in a completely lost Xsession forcing the user to
login again (and possible loss of work).

The ~/xsession-errors of the affected user only shows:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 472687] Re: blender 2.5 regression - cpu flatlines at 100% on default scene

2009-11-18 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
hypothesis: karmic's version of openal is the problem

workaround 1: echo 'drivers = alsa,oss,solaris,dsound,winmm,port,wave'
 ~/.alsoftrc
(back up your old .alsoftrc if you have one)
restart

workaround 2:
compile blender with WITH_BF_OPENAL = 'false'

I have only tried workaround 1. So far no more 100% CPU. But
since I never could dependably reproduce it all this needs further
testing.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353137] Re: missing pixels when drawing connecting lines

2009-11-18 Thread Graeme Geldenhuys
Correction on my last message. This bug has NOT been fixed. This issue
is still visible in a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10 (32 64bit
versions). I also downloaded Fedora 12 LiveCD today, and the exact same
bug is visible there as well. So this doesn't seem to be a distro issue,
but rather a specific version of X or one of it's libraries.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 292214] Re: Xinerama broken since intrepid on MGA

2009-11-18 Thread florin
Hi there,

Matrox g550 works fine here on karmic (9.10) with Xinerama and your
binary, Bryce, that I installed manually. I had some timeout issues with
keyserver.ubuntu.com.

I first had an issue with the second monitor and experienced a
horizontal lines prb but I figured, and was right about this, that the
frequencies were not right. Indeed I'm using two different monitors and
copied the first block for the second one. I then looked on the net for
the monitor specs, fixed xorg.conf and now it works.

I confirm not to be able to use the System-Pref-Display as it's based
on RANDR and get tis ugly error screen.

Actually I have a funny 12-monitors setup here with Xinerama on diff
Linux distros and Os-es and synergy.

Thanks for the patch ...

- Florin

2009-11-18 Thread Brian Murray
Looking at the attachments in this bug report, I noticed that
Xorg.1.log was flagged as a patch. A patch contains changes to an
Ubuntu package that will resolve a bug, since this was not one I've
unchecked the patch flag for it. In the future keep in mind the
definition of a patch. You can learn more about what qualifies as a
patch at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Patches. Thanks!

Hi, I have this issue on Karmic!
The Right Alt key just doesn't work at all, which annoys me a LOT because I

Concerns my laptop keyboard as well as my external keyboard.

to fix the issue, without any result.

I am willing to provide more info if needed!

2009-11-18 Thread dlamer
2009/11/18 Bartosz gan...@poczta.onet.pl

Here you have information about grub2:
 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1195275

First, I've enabled Option ModeSwitchMethod new in xorg.conf - restart
and nothings changed. Everything is as it was.

As in the instruction above I've edited /etc/default/grub with:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768 (also tried 0x117)
sudo update-grub (also tried update-grub2)

After reboot, grub is still in 640x480. In grub comandline I use vbeinfo
and it says that 1024x768 is available (like other modes up to 1920x1440)
but it's using 640x480. Like my changes goes to hell.

The key to resolve this problem is to figure out what special vga=791
does, and to adopt it to grub2 or figure why X server is trying to use
1920x1440 by default (matrix is only 1024x768).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 452907] Re: [PM800] No terminal (Ctrl+Alt+F1, ...) after suspend to RAM (cunfused screen now)

2009-11-18 Thread dlamer
To be more clearly.
When in grub menu:
press 'e' to edit.
move cursor to the end of the line with starts with linux
type: vga=791
press ctrl+x to boot

After the system boots and you log in to gdm and see your desktop, try
CTRL+ALT+1

If console will looks ok it would seem you have the same problem as I
have. ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484900] [NEW] After upgrade to karmic, Xorg will boot with display blank, and no reaction to keypresses (e.g. Alt+Ctrl+1 shows no reaction)

2009-11-18 Thread reinhold
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

After upgrading Kubuntu to karmic (from jaunty), my computer (a Fujitsu-
Siemens Esprimo Q5020, small desktop) will not boot into Xorg. The boot
splash is displayed correctly, but as soon as Xorg starts, the screen
becomes completely black (every time). Trying to switch to the terminals
(e.g. Ctrl+Alt+1) shows no reaction, only Ctrl+Alt+Del reboots.

Booting into failsafe mode shows the exact same behavior.
So, basically there is no way to get into my system any more (except booting
from an old kubuntu 8.04 installation disk that I had lying around).

here are some technical details:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2009-11-18 Thread ZX980
im having this same problem as well. i upgraded to 9.10 from 9.04
roughly 2 days after the release of 9.10 and did so through the update
manager. everything worked absolutely fine for about a week and a half,
untill 2 days ago, when all of a sudden it just locked up. hard reboot
yielded a black screen, not even my bios screen would come up. another
hard reboot yielded the bios screen but that froze halfway through
loading. 3rd time got to the grub loader, which froze there. 4th time
back to absolutely nothing. after doing this process over and over i
finally got to the login screen, logged in, then it froze on me. after
that, it worked fine for about 12 hours. after that, it would run for
about 2.5 hours before locking up. now, if i just let it sit, and done
do anything, it works fine. if i try to use the internet or any program,
it locks up about 5 minutes after starting.

i dont know if this qualifies as the same bug you are all having, since
i am able to use the pc for a short period of time, but, this is the
only thread that is talking of total lockups, so i figured id post here.

my laptop is an acer aspire 5680 with no upgrades. i have no idea what
graphics card or chipsets are in it. though, this laptop is almost 4
years old, if that helps anyone.

im pretty new to using ubuntu, so i dont know the terminal commands or
how to use them yet, so, if anyone has any solutions to this problem,
could you please post them in a new-user friendly version? any help at
all is much appreciated, my computer is my lifeline, especially since im
in college

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484909] [NEW] X loses keyboard and mouse after logout (9.10 livecd with karmic-updates)

2009-11-18 Thread Tuomas Heino
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Started 9.10 livecd, installed updates and virt-manager, logged out to get new
groups applied.
That resulted in a login screen which didn't respond to keyboard/mouse.
Pressed alt-sysrq-r and alt-f2 (as opposed to ctrl-alt-f2) to get to console to
submit the bug.

In theory this might be related to X losing keyboard mouse focus on
guest account on my other computer as well. On both computers both
keyboard and mouse are usb ones.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)

2009-11-18 Thread subchee
gene, not everything is a kernel module if you compile your own kernel.
You can compile drivers directly into your new kernel image (vmlinuz).
When you run make menuconfig you've got 3 options by side of
components (eg. drivers): M means compile as module, * or Y means
compile directly into the kernel, nothing or N means do not compile that
part (neither as module nor part of the vmlinuz).

Tormod, could you please tell me where can I follow the status of the radeon
driver development? :)
(I know that I could check the git sources on kernel.org every day but I'd like
see some roadmap or something like that regarding the radon driver development
if it's possible)

2009-11-18 Thread Leonardo Prosperi
Vsevolod ,
I have the same type of problem.
When I take a screenshot I see the cursor and some icons/menus.
The icons I see in the screenshot are not visible on the screen.
For example, I cannot see OpenOffice menus on the screen, but I can see them in
the screenshot or in a VNC session from a remote computer.

Which Ubuntu version are you using?

Thanks,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 461163] Re: Gnome Freezes -- Ubuntu 9.10 -- big time freezes.

2009-11-18 Thread Bradley Peters
I encountered a similar problem with my Ubuntu computer locking up. I
had previously been using Ubuntu 8.10 and I think I had Effects disable,
but I had to do a fresh install of 9.10 because I could not get 9.04 to
work on my computer. When I upgraded to 9.04 the system would freeze up
also including while Update Manager was running which made the system
unbootable.

In any case, based on the comments posted here, I have removed all
packages with compiz in the name. The system now seems to be running
fine. I don't think I've ever used the Desktop Effects so I'm not
missing anything. My computer has an ATI Radeon X1300 (RV515).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-18 Thread kalessin
I've tried both kernels, and it does not seem to have any effect. The
machine starts, then X starts into low graphics mode and a window opens,
telling me that the Intel driver is complaining about no kernel
modesetting support. I have not made further experiments if I can get it
to initialise somehow, though I have no idea what to try anyway. And I
have also no idea how kernel mode setting is connected to ACPI, although
it seems to be the case, apparently.

Note: run in low graphics mode for one session does not seem to work
as expected, either. If I select it, I get a window stand by one minute
while the display restarts..., and then exactly nothing happens, until
I actively click that window away. Then X closes, and everything starts
on square one, with the same error message I mentioned earlier.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484941] [NEW] nvidia-glx-185 graphics corruption whilst using compiz and other gl-based apps

2009-11-18 Thread daf
Public bug reported:

hardware: XFX gtx260

nvidia-glx-180 used to work just fine under 9.04. Upgrade to 9.10 (and
finally, out of sheer frustration, re-install to 9.10) saw the
introduction of this bug. An application which makes use of GL under
Compiz causes graphics corruption and instability with Compiz. Certain
textures (read: most icons as well as some window internals, eg Firefox
page display) are replaced with corrupted messes instead of their
correct contents.

Originally, I figured this was a Compiz issue, but IT'S NOT. Upgrading my
nvidia drivers to to version 190.42-0ubuntu1~karmic~nvidiavdpauppa2 by using
the ppa at:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nvidia-vdpau/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
causes the problem to cease. I've been running these drivers for a little under
a week and the corruption issue which would show up from a GL-based screensaver
within a day of a X restart is no more. So I'm quite confident that the 185
drivers in 9.10 at the moment (185.18.36-0ubuntu9) are the problem.
