[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2083020] Re: Backport packages for 24.04.2 HWE stack
** Description changed: [Impact] The graphics HWE stack from oracular needs to be backported for 24.04.2 libdrm - build-dep of mesa spirv-llvm-translator - build-dep of llvm llvm-toolchain-19 - new source in noble - build-dep of mesa - required for new AMD platforms - needs two uploads: * 1st stage bootstrap build * 2nd stage after spirv-llvm-translator has built against 1st stage mesa - new major release (24.2.x) - new HW support, Lunar Lake, Battlemage.. + meson + - needed by mesa + - tests disabled because four irrelevant ones fail for some reason, doesn't + affect the mesa backport + [Test case] We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to switch to the NVIDIA driver after installation. No need to test ancient GPU's supported by mesa-amber. And best to focus on the newer generations (~5y and newer) as the older ones are less likely to break at this point. - AMD: Vega, Navi1x (RX5000*), Navi2x (RX6000*), Navi3x (RX7000*) - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12 (TGL/ADL/RKL/RPL/DG2) Install the new packages and run some tests: - check that the desktop is still using hw acceleration and hasn't fallen back to swrast/llvmpipe - run freely available benchmarks that torture the GPU (Unigine Heaven/Valley/Superposition) - run some games from Steam if possible and in each case check that there is no gfx corruption happening or worse. Note that upstream releases have already been tested for OpenGL and Vulkan conformance by their CI. [Where things could go wrong] This is a major update of Mesa, there could be regressions but we'll try to catch any with testing. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2083538] Re: amdgpu: [mmhub] page fault (src_id:0 ring:8 vmid:6 pasid:32781 / Fence fallback timer expired on ring sdma0
** Description changed: [ Impact ] * amdgpu changes in kernel 6.11 make VAAPI video playback crash the GPU and bring down the whole system. * A fix was shipped in mesa 24.2, which is already in Oracular - the only version with kernel 6.11 currently, but snaps bundle their own version of mesa so core22 snaps like Firefox are affected. Firefox has VAAPI disabled by default, but it can be enabled by the user. + + * the fix for noble will be provided via the full version backport from + oracular [ Test Plan ] * Set up a system with an AMD GPU running Ubuntu 24.10 with kernel 6.11 * Open Firefox * Navigate to `about:config` * Search `media.ffmpeg.vaapi.enabled` * Enable the setting by clicking the toggle button * Restart Firefox * Play different videos on x.com or youtube.com (I don't have a reliable reproducer unfortunately) * Ensure that there are no green artifacts on the video playback * Ensure that the system didn't lock up * 10 minutes of scrolling through videos was generally enough to trigger the bug in my testing. -Sometimes I could only get the green artifacts, other times I could get -the system to lock up. + Sometimes I could only get the green artifacts, other times I could get + the system to lock up. [ Where problems could occur ] * The scope of the change is limited to the VAAPI driver for AMD GPUs ( /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/radeonsi_drv_video.so ) An issue with the change may break video playback. But, as this bug demonstrated, a bug in the video acceleration driver may also bring down the whole system... [ Original Description ] It turns out that amdgpu in kernel 6.11 on the Ryzen 6850U is quite crashy and laggy. I have attached the previous boot log which shows a lot of errors. It does not seem to like firefox. Behavior visible is that it hangs, then tries resets, fails to reset and then the screen is unusable so I sysrq reboot it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2061955] [NEW] Add support for Arrow Lake
Public bug reported: [Impact] Booting installed noble will result in gdm unable to show the login screen. Instead of chasing why the software fallback doesn't work properly, it makes more sense to add support for the platform so it can use the native driver. This needs a (squashed) patch which only adds the platform definitions and pci-id's as it is very similar to MTL. include/pci_ids/iris_pci_ids.h |5 src/gallium/drivers/iris/iris_resource.c |2 src/intel/common/intel_l3_config.c |2 src/intel/compiler/brw_compiler.c|2 src/intel/dev/gen_wa_helpers.py |2 src/intel/dev/i915/intel_device_info.c |2 src/intel/dev/intel_device_info.c| 13 + src/intel/dev/intel_device_info.h|8 + src/intel/dev/mesa_defs.json | 532 +++ src/intel/isl/isl.c |4 src/intel/isl/isl_drm.c |4 src/intel/vulkan/genX_query.c|4 12 files changed, 570 insertions(+), 10 deletions(-) [Test case] Install the update, restart gdm, check that the login screen appears. [Where things could go wrong] The patch doesn't affect shipping platforms. For ARL there might still be things missing, but as it's basically the "same" as MTL, this is unlikely. ** Affects: mesa (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: mesa (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: mesa (Ubuntu Noble) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2061955 Title: Add support for Arrow Lake To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/2061955/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2051068] Re: GUI crashed after installed proposed package libegl-mesa0
** Description changed: + [Impact] + + OEM-6.1 kernel is missing support for minimum page size of 64k on DG2 + (gfx12.5). Mesa 23.2 started using that, so it broke initializing the + gpu on boot, causing a blank screen with no GDM running (with wayland, + and fallback to X failed too). + + [Fix] + + Revert the commit that allows using 64k page size, since that's what the + current version in jammy-updates is using. OEM-6.1 kernel is going away, + no need to patch that anymore. No other kernel is affected, >6.2 works + fine and thus this revert is not necessary in mantic or noble. + + [Test case] + + Install the update, boot up a machine with DG2 (iGPU or dGPU, doesn't + matter). The login screen should appear. + + [Where things could go wrong] + Hard to see how this could regress anything, as it just restores the limits for intel gfx12.5 as they were in the current mesa version in jammy. + + + --- + [Summary] After installed proposed package libegl-mesa0, reboot system. GUI crashed but still able to access system by ssh. [Steps to reproduce] 1. Boot into OS 2. sudo apt update 3. sudo apt upgrade 4. After upgrade process finished, reboot system. 5. GUI crashed. [Expected result] GUI displayed normally [Actual result] GUI crashed [Failure rate] 100% Tester comments --- if we don't upgrade libegl-mesa0, GUI will be fine. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2037604] Re: Backport packages for 22.04.4 HWE stack
Ok, I've tested on Intel gen9 (KBL) and gen12 (ADL) so that side is covered too. Gen11 (Ice Lake) is rather rare, so these two generations cover enough. The issue I had with DG2 on 6.1 OEM kernel was caused by missing a commit which allows reducing the minimum memory alignment. I've reverted the commit from mesa, as that way things work the same as before, and is safest regarding updates. This issue is tracked on bug 2051068. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2037604] Re: Backport packages for 22.04.4 HWE stack
** Description changed: [Impact] The graphics HWE stack from mantic needs to be backported for 22.04.4 directx-headers - build-dep of the new Mesa mesa - new major release (23.2.x) - new HW support, Meteor Lake.. [Test case] We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to switch to the NVIDIA blob after installation. No need to test ancient GPU's supported by mesa-amber. And best to focus on the newer generations (~5y and newer) as the older ones are less likely to break at this point. - AMD: Vega, Navi1x (RX5000*), Navi2x (RX6000*), Navi3x (RX7000*) - - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12 (TGL/RKL/RPL/DG2) + - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12 (TGL/ADL/RKL/RPL/DG2) Install the new packages and run some tests: - check that the desktop is still using hw acceleration and hasn't fallen back to swrast/llvmpipe - run freely available benchmarks that torture the GPU (Unigine Heaven/Valley/Superposition) - run some games from Steam if possible and in each case check that there is no gfx corruption happening or worse. Note that upstream releases have already been tested for OpenGL and Vulkan conformance by their CI. [Where things could go wrong] This is a major update of Mesa, there could be regressions but we'll try to catch any with testing. And since it shares bugs with mantic, we'd already know if there are serious issues. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 2037604] Re: Backport packages for 22.04.4 HWE stack
Right, it's probably appropriate to finally have a documented wiki-page for Mesa SRU's, so I'll create one. Upstream does extensive conformance testing on every release, but they do not cover hardware drivers. For that, we should be able to use Intel's Mesa CI which tests branches on many generations of GPU's from them. In order to use it, they need to grant developer access to it and I have a request pending now. For AMD hardware we can maybe ask them to test the backport on their CI (AIUI it's not public). In the past we've had the cert team test the backports on a handful of enabled machines (both Intel & AMD), but having the above would greatly improve the coverage and give greater confidence in these SRU's. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2037604 Title: Backport packages for 22.04.4 HWE stack To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/directx-headers/+bug/2037604/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
