Re: [uportal-dev] uPortal 3.2.2 load issues

2010-08-23 Thread Bruce Tong
We did a load test last month against 3.2.1 with patches that lead up
to 3.2.2. It looked as though we could support about 250 users per
node with our configuration averaging around 2.5 seconds of page
generation time measured right at the host. We used 300 different
student accounts in the test, 50 faculty accounts, and 50 staff
accounts. We focused primarily on loading fragments, not interacting
with a specific portlet.

We launched that way, so I don't have any other versions to compare against.

 Any other ideas to check?

Re: [uportal-dev] uPortal 3.2.2 load issues

2010-08-23 Thread Lennard Fuller
Pearson's HE Portal is going to be going to uPortal 3.1.x soon and we have been
doing some performance testing. The only issue I've ran into was in the event
that all users were users new to uPortal. The problem was not that uPortal
3.1.x did not handle the load, but that it did so a good deal slower than
uPortal 2.6.1. In spite of that my laptop was able to handle 600 concurrent
users which resulted in 18k new logins in roughly a half hour. I have a patch
which will be uploaded some time today or tomorrow which significantly narrows
the gap between uPortal 2.6.1 and uPortal 3.1.x. What the patch impacts is the
same for all uPortal 3.x versions from 3.0 to present. With this patch,
uPortal is fast enough to meet Pearson's needs. I do think that there is some
further room for performance improvement, but since uP3 is now 'fast enough' it
is unlikely I'll get the time to make further improvements.
As far as missing indices... I've noticed that the same indices that were
missing in older versions of uPortal appear to be missing in the newer. For
example, no index on USER_NAME in the UP_USER table. Many institutions
probably have no need for that index though. For Pearson, we can have upwards
of 14+ million users, and tend to end up adding indices that would not be
necessary elsewhere.
In my experience, if you aren't dealing with nothing but new users, the
limiting facter is rarely the portal, and typically the portlets (that is
unless uPortal has not been configured/tuned properly).
