This portable freeware does the job:

https://www.azhagi.com/

(In case of link problems, that is https: followed by www.azhagi.com )

It enables you to type text in almost any language (or combination of
languages) into almost any application. It's harmless and self-contained: it
doesn't change any settings in the system or in any application. It only
affects the keyboard, and only when you explicitly turn it on.

The software was originally created to handle languages of the Indian
subcontinent, but some linguaholic übernerd added keyboard mappings for lots of
other languages, here:

https://www.azhagi.com/alec.php

(In case of link problems, that is https: followed by
www.azhagi.com/alec.php )

Without needing to click anything, you can type pretty much all the
Latin-alphabet languages with a single keyboard layout. (Sic.)

The layout is designed to be easy to remember, so you won't need a crib sheet
after the first couple of times.

For example, once you've learned how to add an acute accent to a letter, you
can use the same key-presses to add an acute accent to any letter, in any
language, that can take an acute accent, e.g.:   á É ń Ś ẃ Ĺ ź ǽ    etc.

Best wishes,

Alec

Another option would be to use something like AutoKey (on Linux) or
AutoHotKey (on Windows) to type those characters for you, or if you use
Linux you can just use the Compose key (a lot of information about that
online).
If you haven't heard of AutoKey or AutoHotKey, they make it possible to
create shortcuts to special characters and whole phrases. For instance you
could create a phrase with the ℃ character and insert it by typing degC or
something. I use both all the time (AutoKey at home and AutoHotKey at work,
since my job computer unfortunately only have Windows), and I find them
extremely useful for a lot of things.

The advantage of using Autokey or AutoHotKey is that you can insert your
special characters and phrases anywhere, not only in LibreOffice.

When you double-click, the character is inserted immediately and you stay in
the Special Characters dialogue, so you can then just double-click the next
character(s). When you're done, you click on Cancel to exit from the dialogue.
At least that's what's happening for me in LO 7.3.2.2.

Hi,

I have just taken an upgrde (with Linux Mint) from LO 5.something to
7.3.7.2. Lots of good things, but I'm really upset about the way
Insert Special Characters has changed. I used to be able to enter
a long string (one or more words) in Hebrew or Greek characters,
with them being compiled in a box below the character set, then hit
'insert' to put the whole thing into my document. Now, it seems as
though I have to do it one character at a time, which is much more
time-consuming. If there any way to get the old behaviour?

In fairness, it's not always down to the developers of the application
one happens to be using. Sometimes, it can be as a result of changes in
underlying toolkits and libraries that are being used. IDK whether that
applies in this instance.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Importing a row from a spreadsheet

2023-04-30 Thread Alan B
Ian, if you reply, please reply to users@global.libreoffice.org, not my
email. Thank you.

I created a twelve (12) column spreadsheet, A to L, with two rows in Calc,
then selected A1:L2, then copied and pasted it into Write.

That had the same result as you described, columns disappearing off the
right of the page.

HOWEVER, when I created an empty one (1) row, twelve (12) column table in
Write FIRST and then pasted the Calc selection into it (cursor at R1, C1 of
table in Write) both rows were pasted into the table and the table did not
expand beyond the margins of the page.

If you haven't tried creating a blank, one row table in Write, with the
same number of columns as your source spreadsheet, give that a shot.

Create the table in Write. Only need one row but need the same number of
columns as in your source spreadsheet.

Then, copy the rows and columns in the spreadsheet.

And finally paste into R1, C1 in the Write table.

See if that produces the result you're looking for.

Also, if you wish to have an individual one row table in Write for each
item in the catalog, proceed with the copy/paste as described above. The
resulting table in Write will have one row for each row pasted from Calc.

To separate the rows in Write, put your cursor in any row, then select
Table>Split Table... from the menu. Select the "No heading" option and
click "OK" button. Repeat as many times as you need to break the table into
individual rows.

Another option would be to use something like AutoKey (on Linux) or
AutoHotKey (on Windows) to type those characters for you, or if you use

If you haven't heard of AutoKey or AutoHotKey, they make it possible to
create shortcuts to special characters and whole phrases. For instance you
could create a phrase with the ℃ character and insert it by typing degC or
something. I use both all the time (AutoKey at home and AutoHotKey at work,

The advantage of using Autokey or AutoHotKey is that you can insert your

If she barely knows how to use Word, then I would guess that running 7.4
would be a better idea, since 7.5 is still the unstable version, maybe with
some not yet discovered bugs.

As someone pointed out that LibreOffice Writer could be a bit too complex,
I think I should mention a simpler open source word processor: AbiWord.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Insert Special Characters

2023-04-30 Thread Jonathan Allen
Dear Harald,

> I think they changed it to make it easier.
> >Double-click on a special character will insert it into the document.<

Yes, I read that. But it doesn't make it easier - in fact it makes
it much more difficult. Before I could single click on anything
between 1-10 (or more) characters in the character map, then click
'Insert' and the whole string was dropped neatly into my document.
Now I have to double click each character (and vowel-point/accent)
in turn, then re-enter Insert Special Character. Not a clever choice.

Hi! I'm helping an elderly woman start using LibreOffice Writer on a new laptop she
purchased. The laptop has Windows 11 and she's not interested in paying for MS Office.
She barely knows how to use a word processor, so I'm interested in finding some
recent/current tutorials to help her learn the basics. She's running version 7.5.2.2. I
found a basic introductory video on YouTube, but it was posted back in 2018. I found
another tutorial, an "ultimate" tutorial, but it seemed focused on a task she
wouldn't be doing so I think it would overwhelm her.

Does anyone know of any good, recent/current tutorials a complete newbie could
use?

Thanks in advance!

Peace...

Tom

Re: [libreoffice-users] Looking for current LibreOffice Writer tutorials

2023-04-30 Thread Tom
Hi!  Thanks for the reply!  Your point is well taken and I'll definitely
see if something like Wordpad could be of use to her. Interestingly, she
has many MS Works files that Writer can open. So if she finds Wordpad is
easier to grasp, I can convert those MS Works files into something
Wordpad can open.

Thanks for the feedback and insight! :)

A complex text program could be overwhelming here.
A simpler program (e.g. Wordpad, integrated in Windows) could be more

Sorry for this answer. I would have loved to recommend LibreOffice.
