You can use the shortcut Strg+X for "Cut" without menü.

If you press C a second time in the menu, the selection goes to "Delete".

Underline letters depend on language. Which flavor of English do you use?

[libreoffice-users] Error 540

2020-08-20 Thread Johnny Rosenberg
Suddenly, from one day to another, I keep getting that annoying Error 540
whenever I try to get the cell value from another spreadsheet document.

First I open a spreadsheet document. The folder where the file is located
is included in Tools → Options … → Security → Macro Security … → Trusted
Sources → Trusted File Locations

Tools → Options … → Security → Options … → ☐ Block any links from documents
not among the trusted locations (see macro Security) is NOT checked.

Now I hit the New button to create a new spreadsheet file. I click cell A1
in that new spreadsheet, and I type ”=”, then I click cell L111 in the
other spreadsheet, the one I opened first. I then hit Enter.

A1 is now displaying ”Err:540”.

What am I expected to do to never see that happening again?

Err:540 means: ”*Happens if a function that requires (re)loading of
external sources is encountered and the user hasn't confirmed reloading of
external sources yet*”

No question whether I want to confirm reloading of anything came up, so
what am I supposed to do?

I had the same problem a few days ago and somehow it suddenly worked, but I
don't know what I did to make that happen, and not it doesn't seem to
matter what I do.

Do I also need to save the new spreadsheet file at some place included in
that Trusted File Locations?

LibreOffice 6.4.5
Manjaro Linux 20.0.3

Kind regards

Johnny Rosenberg

[libreoffice-users] Error Code 540

2020-06-17 Thread WA.TWORSX via AOL

Hi Users Group:

I hope that you are well and staying safe.

I am a novice with LO. Using LO Version: 6.4.4.2 (x64) Build ID:
3d775be2011f3886db32dfd395a6a6d1ca2630ff.

I am trying to clean up an existing LO-Calc file by calling data from an
external .ods file source. Am presently facing an error code # 540.
FWIW, the external source .ods file was initially generated using Apache
Open Office, but I am now editing it via LO.

I found the definition of code 540: 'External content disabled', but
have notfoundhow to 'enable external content'.  Tried searching within
the F1 Help index for enable external content, w/o success.

I would appreciate help in finding out how I should go about enabling
the external source file, which is on my Windows10-x64 C: drive. Must
enabling be done within the source file? Is there a menu selection for
this?

Thanks for reading this.

Regards,

VinceB.

Hi Valter,

Mageia Cauldron working fine with 6.4.3.1 Gtk and did not note a
problem before these updates.

Have you reported this to Neon? This sounds like a packaging or
possible Plasma problem (having seen that Plasma just issued a minor
update). These files should be "owned" by root, so there should be no
problem. You can check ownership in the terminal with:

 ls -lart /usr/lib64/libreoffice/help/

(The files are located there on my 64-bit system. Double check the
location on yours.)

Best,
Roy

(b) I doubt I'll be able to help you but as I said I doubt anybody will
be able to help unless you state the actual error message you're seeing.

FWIW, in private email you said "Click Next or move to the Last tab

that the error is in macro code that runs when you click Validate. You
might want to extract that code and look for problems, but unless you

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error When Closing Document Using Automation

2018-08-31 Thread Andrew Pitonyak

Sorry, I do not know what is going on, but

DO you see anything different if you:

1. Pause for a few seconds before you call close? In the back of my
mind I am wondering if for some silly reason, control returns to you
before the save command finishes running.

2. out of curiousity, what value is in the isModified property?
3. I assume that you are calling terminate on the desktop object, is
this correct?
4. Assuming you sleep a few seconds first, what happens if you call
dispose on the document rather than close? I do not even know if the
dispose method still exists, but, if it does. Note that you should not
in general use dispose, but, that is what existed before close() was
added to the API.

Could be you have written 2 fields for the mainform and one field for
the subform?
Other possibility: There are parameters in the query of the subform. You
have more parameters than connected fields from mainform and subform.

[libreoffice-users] Error messge interpretation...

2018-07-17 Thread Michael Tiernan

I have a fairly simple form that queries a DB.

I have a form and a subform.

I "linked" the two fields for the subform and when I execute the form, I
get the error message:

SQL Status: HY000
Error code: 1

parameter marker count incorrect

I assume it should be obvious but I can't figure out where the problem is.

Anyone able to offer a breadcrumb for me to follow?

Thanks for everyone's time.

Re: [libreoffice-users] error exporting Writer document

2017-07-16 Thread Philip Jackson
I've solved my problem. And thankyou Brian for the message you sent.

I went back to a backup which did export correctly to epub and xhtml and
then looked for what changes I had made between that 'good' copy and the
'bad' document. I undid the changes progressively while testing the
conversion at intervals.

On 16/07/17 18:02, Philip Jackson wrote:

The only fault was a web hyperlink formed in an unusual manner. Normally
when I form a hyperlink in Writer, I place the url in the 'Target' field
of the dialog box and the text that will be shown underlined as the
clickable link goes in the 'Text' field. I leave the 'Name' field blank.

However, on one occasion out of dozens in this document, a hyperlink
which I probably copied and pasted from somewhere on the web, had the
same entry 3 times - in the 3 fields : Target, Text, Name.

Once I deleted the Name entry, the document now exports correctly.

I can't say I understand why that was a problem but I'm pleased that it
has now gone away.

Philip

[libreoffice-users] error exporting Writer document

2017-07-16 Thread Philip Jackson
Using LO 5.1.6.2 in UbuntuStudio 16.04LTS

I've had a failure to export a Writer document to xhtml and epub using
the export filters of the extension Writer2xhtml. Export to html using
LO's native export filter does work ok.

The export hangs for a few seconds and then quits with a first error
message, entitled ":Internal error in conversion" - and saying :

"org.w3c.dom.DOMException: INVALID_CHARACTER_ERR: An invalid or illegal
XML character is specified. at
com.sun.org.apache.xerces.internal.dom.CoreDocumentImpl.createAttribute(CoreDocumentImpl.java:611)"

Clicking OK produces a LibreOffice error saying that a "Write Error" had
occurred and the file could not be written. Then Writer falls over and
has to be restarted.

This type of export is an operation I've done hundreds of times over the
past several years with the current setup and with earlier versions of
LO and I've never had a problem before. I can still do this export
operation with other Writer files including earlier versions of the
problem file, so I expect that the particular document concerned has
some corruption somewhere. Since it is rather lengthy and in the final
stages of editing, it contains lots of recent small edits but nothing
that I could say was unusual.

Can anyone help with understanding what that 'illegal XML character'
error means and how I can track down more precisely where the error is ?

Thanks,
Philip

My guess is that your download failed and wasn't retried because it's
timestamp is more recent. Try removing the file from
/home/libreoffice/core/workdir/download and run make again.

My other guess is that this list is mainly for users of LibreOffice, and
that dev questions should go to the dev list :)

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error in date field with diferent language - lowriter - docx

2017-01-31 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
DocX is a notoriously unreliable format. It's a Microsoft Format and MS
formats have often been compromised and used to spread malware. Best to
avoid storing documents in MS formats! Each different version of MS Office
has a different "transitional" version of the format.

It is usually best to save in ODF (=Open Document Format), which is Odt for
text-based documents.

ODF formats can be used by many different programs, unlike MS formats which
often have trouble even being read by the one program they are designed
for.

Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Error in date field with diferent language - lowriter - docx

2017-01-31 Thread edu.corr84
Hi all,

I use LO-Writer with the default language (English), so when I write in
another language (Spanish), I insert the date field with the specific
language, so far so good. But If I save the file with extension docx, I
close it and open it again, the date field is in English.

It is a bug I think.

Thanks,
Eduardo.

Error 1714 is a well known failure of Microsoft's Installer Program (for
.msi files). This issue was encountered more frequently in the days of
Win XP, particularly for users of MS Office 2003, but can still raise
it's ugly head, even for users of Win 10.

Microsoft previously provided a "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility", but
no longer support it. In the past I have successfully used the utility
to resolve this problem on several computers. I am told, but cannot
confirm, that it still works on Windows 10.

BEWARE: Use at your own risk. Microsoft claims that "This tool _could_
damage some components of the operating system". Unless you are
comfortable using this kind of utility, you might wish to get help from
a more experienced computer user.

Re: [libreoffice-users] error installing LO 5.2.2

2016-10-11 Thread Tim---Kracked_P_P---webmaster

Sorry Tom, but it does not work. I do not think the "fix broken
packages" would not be useful since the error was telling me that I do
not have all the dependencies that was listed for 5.2.2, even though I
did not have that error with 5.2.1.2. So something within one of the
upgraded .deb files decided that it needed a package that 5.2.1 need
with the Ubuntu "terminal" based install.

Actually, I tend to check for broken package every few weeks.

Which version of Raspberry Pi are you using? "Pi 2" or "Pi 3 B"?
Running Raspbian or Ubuntu Mate? It looks like the RPi 3 can run the
"Windows 10 IOT Core"

RPi 3 seems to have come out a few months ago. "They" released the
first "starter kit" last month. One day, I hope to get a RPi with all
the "starter equipment" needed to complete it - except the VGA or HDMI
connector monitor and USB keyboard/mouse because I have them already.

Henri,
I do not install the PPA versions of LO. I choose which version I
install. A lot of times I keep using a "still" version instead of the
newest "fresh" version. Actually, this laptop is running 5.2.1.2, since
the 5.2.2.x fresh version that has the pesky error. 5.2.0 and 5.2.1 does
not have that error. So, the PPA release may not be the right move for
me. I still have one laptop [Windows and Ubuntu partitions] that still
use 5.1.x.

Tim, have you tried adding *ppa:libreoffice/libreoffice-prereleases* to
your systems Software sources ? Works like a charm for me on Linux Mint

I run Ubuntu/Mate 16.04 64-bit.

I've had the same issue for some time when updating the LibreOffice on
systems manually. If the help package has been loaded, the update process
only works if you do it all at once.

I generally download and extract the whole LibreOffice, and then download
and extract the help file. Copy the RPM for the help file into the same
directory as the other RPM files, and then run the rpm -Uvh *.rpm. Probable
a similar issue with Ubuntu. They need to be insync.

The windows version will let you install them out of sync, but it probable
shouldn't, but don't think that systems has the checks.

dpkg: error processing package libobasis5.2-en-us-help (--install):
  dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

After I failed to install 5.2.2.x, I installed 5.2.1.x.

The "LibreOffice_5.2.1.2_Linux_x86-64_deb.tar.gz" files installed
without a hitch. So the problem was with the install of the file in
5.5.2.x, not 5.2.0 or 5.2.1. After I installed the main set of files
with the terminal, then I installed the help file .deb.

I used these commands to install 5.2.x.x;

sudo apt-get remove libreoffice?
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

This is only way I have installed LO onto my Ubuntu partitions on
various laptops and desktops.

See that it is complaining about libobasis5.2-en-us. If you removed

perhaps this dependency was removed then, and not replaced in the 5.2.2

Thanks for responding, Anne.

I am not at all technical so I really have no idea what you mean by LO
file-loader, or how to go about it.

   [somehow you misread file-folder for file-loader ;-)

the LO file-folder is located ... from 'start' menu, click on,
maybe, 'computer' then scroll up to 'Users' then [your personal ID] then
scroll to 'AppData' then 'Roaming' then 'LibreOffice' ... you'll find
everything there, but coded to use in LO]

I don't have a virus as I have Norton 360 protection so it must be
something to do with a version upgrade. I was asked to allow LO to make
changes just before this happened.

   [with Norton, you may very well have a virus; but let's assume not;

I'm confused though by your statement that LO asked to make changes]

Could you please tell me where I can find a previous version of LO so I can
delete the current version and install the older one? Maybe that will
work.

[if you don't have your previous version still on your machine, then you
probably can find whatever you're wanting to use at the LO site.]

Thanks again.

Greg.

Sounds to me as if you've either uncovered a bug or contracted some
virus,
  therefore, I would suggest:

   (1) if a bug, then revert back to a previous version before this
occured;

   (2) if a virus, then run the various A-V programs until your system
is again clean.

   Meanwhile, go behind-the-scenes to the LO file-folder;
  gather all your data;
save this elsewhere for safe keeping.

Hi all.
Every time I try and open a document from my Hard Drive to Libre Office I
get the following Error window.
ERROR The requested operation requires elevation.
This has been happening for the last week or so. It coincided with Libre
Office asking to make changes to my computer whenever I tried to start the
program and it won't start unless I say 'YES'.
Any document that is in the 'recent documents' option in the program itself
will open, but nothing else.
I have deleted and re-installed Libre Office and still no difference.
Can anyone help and let me know how to fix this issue? I have many
extremely important business documents I can no longer access.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

[libreoffice-users] Error message

2015-07-13 Thread MARK ARTMAN
I'm having trouble getting the database app of LibreOffice to run in windows
8.1 (64-bit). When I try to launch it, I receive an error message that days I
don't have Java runtime environment installed. I do have Java installed, so I
dint understand why I'm receiving this error message. Can anyone point me in
the right direction? I appreciate any and all assistance you can provide. Thank
you.

Also, the bit-ness of the installed Java needs to match the bit-ness

LO needs a 64-bit Java. (Independent of the OS being 64-bit.)

2015-07-13 Thread elderdanlewis
Likely the problem is that since windows 8 is 64 bit, Mark installed a 64 bit
JRE. LibreOffice is 32 bit and needs a 32 bit JRE. If this is the case, Mark,
install the 32 bit JRE for windows. This should solve the problem.

Or of course install the 64 bit version of LibreOffice (I don't think it's
official yet but I could be wrong). If you install that version you can
then have the 64 bit version of JRE installed.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error

2015-02-10 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
GMail Translator translated the Spanish question into
The program LibreOffice spreadsheet gives several errors. I have
lost my job because of you, in addition to several colleagues. They
have also suffered the error.
Arregladlo or take legal action.

There is no mention of what the errors were. So it's not worth
posting this to the Spanish mailing list nor the L10n list. I have a
feeling it might be good to forwards it to the Discuss Mailing List
but i really don't know who would be best to forwards this to.

Excel has a few things that are wrongly defined (ie deliberately
ignoring ISO definitions of things) and so there are probably standard
work-arounds. If those work-arounds were used in a spreadsheet read
by something that does use the ISO definitions then the results would
obviously be wrong. So it's possible 'we' (well, TDF) are being
blamed for being too correct.

In Accountancy training i was taught to never trust the results of
anything and to always either test a sample or double-check
everything. In Physics and other sciences we were taught to use rough
estimates of calculations before doing precise calculations in order
to make sure things made some sort of sense in order to avoid spending
a lot of time getting a very precisely wrong figure. So i am not sure
quite how much it's possible to blame the tools.

Also there doesn't seem to have been any effort to contact us for
advice in advance of this grumble. The person doesn't seem to have
been able to understand the instructions on the website, which almost
everyone else has found fairly easy, to get to the mailing lists for
their own language - which even a quick google search would have given
them more directly anyway. Plus they seem to have been unable to find
the Contact Us page, to find the official registered address.

Tom :)

Hi :)
This message got through to the English User Support mailing list by
mistake. I'm not sure the Spanish one can really help - the question
doesn't tell us what the actual problem was! It's probably more aimed

Files containing large (in terms of pixels, not printed size) images can
take a noticeable time to save, and that includes auto-savings.
Keystrokes and mouse clicks may be stored up while LO appears to be
unresponsive, and then processed once it's finished saving and starts
responding again.

It's possible that, while LO appeared to be unresponsive, you've ended
up adjusting the zoom to a small size so that the page appears about the
size of an icon. Try adjusting the zoom scale - from the View menu,
select Zoom... and then either 100% or Entire Page (or another
option) depending how large you want the page displayed.

If that doesn't help, could you clarify:
- Are you using LO Writer or LO Draw?
- Where are you seeing just a small icon? e.g. is that in Draw's
left-hand pane (which shows a small preview of each page), or in the
main area where the page is usually edited?

I wasn't clear - but not in the way you thought! I meant that 2^53 is
represented *in binary* (as it will be in the computer) as one
followed by fifty-three zeroes, of course. So it's the value that is
just too large to be stored accurately in double precision. (As so

Errr, all i can suggest is to switch off the auto-save as it can be
annoying anyway. However that does mean you'll have to remember to save

This is not an error!

You are using a finite computing machine - one in which each number
in a cell is stored in a memory location of finite length. So there
is always a limit to how large an integer can be stored and to how
great a precision a floating-point value can be stored. Your computer
is probably using double-precision binary floating-point format, in
which numbers are stored in eight-byte (sixty-four-bit) words. This
allows around fifty-three significant binary digits, the rest being
taken up by the sign and exponent. This level of precision
corresponds to between fifteen and sixteen significant decimal
digits, so integers can be stored precisely only up to this length of
number, above which values can be stored, but only to around fifteen
significant digits.

2^53 is one followed by fifty-three zeroes, of course - so is just
too long to be stored accurately. You are very unlikely to need
numbers of this magnitude as final results, and if you come across
this problem, you can usually find a simple way to reorganise your
calculation to avoid the problem.

Note that the (biased) exponent is stored in an eleven-bit field, so
a separate problem occurs if you try to calculate with numbers above
about 2^1023.

For a fuller explanation, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-precision_floating-point_format .

I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error while retrieving $lo_sources_ver Inbox

2014-02-23 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
There are pre-built versions available for download. The extra
efficiencies gained by doing the build yourself is unlikely to be
worth the hassle. it is a lot easier to just download the main
installer, language-pack and in-built help.

However, please let us know which Operating System you are using and
we might be able to help. Are you on Slackware, Xp, Win7, Ubuntu, Mac
or which?

I suspect the devs irc channel or mailing list might be more helpful
if you really do need to do the build but they will want to know which
system you are using and whether you have done any builds of anything
else before.
Regards from
Tom :)

That's odd, as it's not how it behaves for me and definitely not how it
is supposed to work. It may depend a bit on precisely what format you
have set for the cells.

Just experimented with this a bit, and Precision as shown does not
seem to have any effect when the cells are set to General format.

However, with the cell format set to 0.0 (to display a fixed
number of decimal places), the Precision as shown option _does_ seem
to work as expected. So it seems more like Precision as set by display
format rather than literally as shown...

2014-02-03 Thread marianne-x
Interesting, if unsavoury, behaviour. I can confirm the identical
results from /Curtains 7/, and LO 4.1.4.2. Line 28 marks the spot.
On a second /Curtains 7/ machine, LO deficiencies do not permit
installation of main-line LO, but the portable version, 4.0.6.2,
behaves in the same way.
Since LO is not allowed on that 2nd machine, routine work there is done
with OO 3.3.0, and it, too, behaves identically on this test.

Perhaps someone with access to M$ will try the experiment there, to see
how universal this phenomenon is.

I'm having to guess, as you've posted a screenshot but not the
spreadsheet itself. But your column appears to be calculated by an
iterative formula, with each row calculated from the previous
one. As you do this, rounding errors will be introduced, and these
will increase in size as you double the value at each step. Since
you take only the fractional part of the result, the number in each
row does not generally grow in size, so the rounding errors
eventually become significant compared with the values you have.

The calculation is probably being carried out internally to around
fifteen significant figures. When I try this calculation, rounding
errors appear at row 8, but only in the fifteenth significant
figure. This will be happening in your calculation too, but becomes
visible only in row 26, where the difference begins to show in the
nine significant figures you chose to display. Note that the
rounding will occur in the binary numbers being used in the
calculation by your computer hardware, not in the decimal values
being displayed. Your results all terminate after the first
fractional place in decimal, but they will not do so in binary, where
even 0.1 is the recurring fraction 0.0[0011] with those last four
digits repeating.

You will see different results - perhaps even those you seek - if you
tick Tools | Options... | LibreOffice Calc | Calculate | Precision as
shown. This causes the displayed value you see to be used in each
calculation instead of the true value hidden in the cell.

Of course, you could apply some mathematics and find a simpler way of
calculating these values - which, after the first, simply repeat the
sequence 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 0.6. One example is:

=MOD(2^(ROW()-1);10)/10
- but this will go awry at row 52, since 2^51 is so large (around
fifteen digits) that its units digit is no longer reliable.

So here's a better version:
=MOD(2^(MOD(ROW()-2;4)+1);10)/10
- which should work more or less indefinitely, though not for the
(exceptional) first row.

I trust this helps.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error or what?

Hi,
It behaves more or less the same in Excel 2003 in Win7.

http://shared.59551.x6.nabble.com/Error-or-Same-thing-in-Excel-td3.html

The formula is from a book on chaos, it describes a way to simulate a
controlled chaotic sequence:
take a number, a fraction between zero and one, and double it. Then
drop the integer part, the part to the left of the decimal point. Then
repeat the process. Since most numbers are irrational and unpredictable
in their fine detail, the process will just produce an unpredictable
sequence of numbers.

I expected something unpredictable, but not this! :)

[libreoffice-users] Error 1335 installing LibreOffice

2014-01-30 Thread ross...@libero.it
Hello
I have tried to install LibreOffice French 4.2.0.4 on PC with XP SP3 and I had
the reply: error 1335 fault of libreoffice2.cab (same for LO 4.1.4).I think is
not a corrupted download because the the same LO I installed it on a Windows 7
smoothly.
What can I do for the XP installation?

[libreoffice-users] Error 2908 and 1935 after installing .Net 4.5.1 and attempting to update Libreoffice to 4.0.4

2014-01-22 Thread Tanstaafl

Subject says it.

I uninstalled the old version (3.6.3 I think it was), then installed
.Net 4.5.1, and when I tried to install Libreoffice 4.0.4, the
installation failed, first got the error 2908, then the 1935.

Hope there is an easy fix, because this is the Boss's computer.

The troubleshooting section at the bottom of:
https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/installation/windows/
describes a solution for error 1935. Error 2908 may also be related to
the same problem.

Or may be an error in the registry. Looks like this tool from MS might help:
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/Program_Install_and_Uninstall

Other pages indicate adware/virus scanners can cause these kind of errors:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/902330
http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-1935-install-acrobat-reader.html
Those links are related to problems installing MS and Adobe software,
but the same issue may affect other installers.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error saving the document ...

2013-10-09 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
You might find much better guidance about all this on the international
translators list.  They tend to speak/write English almost all the time.  I
think their address is
l...@global.libreoffice.org

If you think you have found the cause and that makes it awkward for you then
perhaps start a fresh new document and try your theory out.  If it makes the
new document unable to save and even crashes it then the L10n team might have
some better work-around.  If it doesn't then chalk it up to some weirdness
and carry on as before = in which case keep saving fairly often to avoid having
to retype hours worth of work.

I tend to find that something that took hours to write first time seldom takes
more than 15-20mins because i already know which wrong turns to avoid, which
decisions i took and what problems i encountered.  Generally i don't directly
remember but my fingers seem to know all by themselves.

Tom :)

Hi :)
I am not sure what the problem is but might be able to shed some light
on the error message.

If you create a copy of the file and rename the file-name's ending
from .odt to .zip and then double-click on the .zip then the file
opens in your archive manager. (Ok, so in Xubuntu and most other
GnuLinuxes (Linii?) that can be done without renaming the
file-ending.  Just right-click and choose Open With - Archive
Manager)

You will now see several .xml files and several folders (such as
images) inside your file.  The number 1 most crucial file is the
contents.xml, which you can open with a text-editor such as Leafpad.
Somewhere in Leafpad it tells you that the file is open as a Plain
text file.  Click on that and a drop-down should appear allowing you
to choose different languages and hopefully one of those is xml.  If
you choose xml then Leafpad cleverly figures out all the different
bits of xml-coding and colour codes them allowing you to more easily
spot the real text you typed in buried in amongst all the xml coding.

My guess is that somehow Writer managed to get in a muddle and
stuffed-up it's coding somehow.  Perhaps a coding bracket didn't get
closed or something else weird.  I think i vaguely remember something
like this happening once before in the last 3 years but it's a tad
rare.

Thanks for the explanation. If it happens again I'll try File Roller or
something.

In the meantime, I think I know what caused it. I had been typing in
Greek and suddenly needed a gave accent over an iota. Silly me, I am
new to Greek keyboards and did not realize that the Greek (Simple)
keyboard I was using did not have polytonic diacritics. Being in a
hurry I just used Insert Character and placed a gave accent on the iota
as a combining diacritic. It was shortly thereafter that I discovered
that I could not save the document.

Now, I have been using combining diacritics with LibreOffice and
formerly with OpenOffice.org for many years, and there has never been a
problem. I work in linguistics where I need several dozen different
diacritics that compose keys never heard of. Ctrl-Shift-u is ingrained
into my fingers and I keep a list of the code points at hand. I use a
*lot* of combining diacritics, so if I say there has never been a
problem, I mean the system has always been rock solid. I am a bit
worried that this experience might mean that something has changed and
a bug has been introduced.

And speaking of Ctrl-Shift-u, it doesn't work when the Greek keyboard
is selected. Nor does Ctrl-Shift-upsilon (the u key actually produces
a theta). I had to use Insert Character instead to add my combining
diacritic. I suppose I need to find a Linux help page for Greek users
in order to learn what the equivalent key combination is on a Greek
keyboard. Except I'm just beginning Greek and the instructions would be,
umm ... Greek to me.

[libreoffice-users] Error saving the document ...

2013-10-08 Thread John Jason Jordan
Writer document of a little over one page that has been saved
repeatedly without a problem as I created it over the past two days. It
is almost finished, and suddenly I got:

Error saving the document filename:
Write Error.
Error in writing sub-document content.xml.

I also tried Save As, but get the same error message.

Then I did Select All (Ctrl-a) intending to copy it all and paste it
into a new document. Writer locked up, and a few moments later Xubuntu
popped up a Crash Report Detected message. And then the Writer window
disappeared from the screen.

I re-launched Writer and got the recovery screen. I clicked on Start
Recovery and it recovered the document, sans the last half hour of
work. I typed a couple characters and saved it again without issue, so
apparently the recovered document is saving fine now.

I have used OOo and LO since about 2000, and I have never had a
crash before. This is version 3.5.7.2 that came with Xubuntu.

The document in question is just text, about half in tables. Some
cells are in Greek and some in English.

Can someone translate the above error message for me? What might have
caused it?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Error in Calc custom formats between closing and opening a file

2013-09-13 Thread Paul
Hi Don,

Thanks for the input.

Is this also using a string literal after the format string, like /
hour ? And if so, even if the formatting isn't messed up, is there a
space between the number specifier and the string literal, like
#,###.00 / hour

or has the space been put inside the string literal, like
#,###.00 /hour

I suspect the space issue is not region specific, but just isn't
immediately apparent on US versions, so would be interested to hear if
it is happening or not with your documents.

Thanks

Paul

 following LO versions:

 4.0.3.3

This is with a locale of South Africa, but I think that just makes the

Hi Regina,

didn't mean to just disappear like that. It's been a bit hectic here,
and I haven't had time to try with LibreOffice 4.1 beta yet, but I've
tried a couple of other things.

Firstly, I tried formatting the cell as a plain number, with
' / hour' after the default format, so the complete format is
#,###.00 / hour

This got changed over the save to
#,###.00 / hour

Again, the space was removed in front of the quotes, and added
behind. Other than that, the hour wasn't mangled, I'm assuming that
the mangling is only because of interpreting it as currency symbols.

When I removed the extra space behind the quotes, but left it without a
space in front, it preserved that over saves, i.e. the following worked
fine over saves
#,###.00 / hour

This is still rejected when I change to currency format.

Next, I looked at my locale settings. Under Tools|Options|Language
Settings|Languages I have the following:
Language of
User interface: Default - English (USA)
Locale setting: Default - English (South Africa)
Decimal separator key: checked : Same as locale setting (.)
 Default currency: Default - ZAR
 Date acceptance patterns: Y/M/D;M/D
Default languages for documents
 Western: English (South Africa)
Asian: greyed out : Default - Chinese (simplified)
CTL: greyed out : Default - Hindi
For the current document only: not checked
Enhanced language support
Show UI elements for East Asian writings: not checked
Show UI elements for Bi-Directional writing: not checked
Ignore system input language: not checked

I tried changing the default locale setting to English (USA), which
also changed the currency and date settings. When I added ' / hour'
it again moved the space from in front of the quotes to inside the
quotes over saves. But now this doesn't mangle anything, I'm
guessing because it's using a dollar sign instead of an R as the
currency symbol. Changing the symbol to R by changing the format code
from [$$-409] to [$R-409] works if the locale is English (USA).
When the locale is Default - English (South Africa), changing the
currency symbol by changing [$R-1C09] to [$$-1C09] doesn't help
matters.

I also noticed that with a space either in front of the quotes or
moved inside the quotes to give a double space before the slash, two
spaces are shown before the slash in the actual cell. So the only way
to get only one space between the number and the slash in the cell is
to have only one space, either in front of the qoutes or inside the
quotes, but not both.

It feels like there are two bugs, the first is that over saves LO
doesn't preserve the space before the quotes, and moves it inside the
quotes, irrespective of locale, and the second is that when there is no
space before the quotes, the letters inside the quotes get interpreted
as control codes instead of as literal text, and this interpretation
depends on locale.

There was also some strange behavior when entering just a plain number
format, not currency. If I tried to enter a new number format by adding
spaces inside the quotes, without a space in front of the quotes, say by
setting the format to '#,###.00 / hour' and then adding spaces to
make it '#,###.00 / hour', the moment it became a new format (one I
hadn't used before), the preview changed to just displaying the number,
without any formatting, and if I clicked OK, this carried over to the
cell and reset the format to '#,##0 ;(#,##0)'. If, however, I didn't
click OK when the preview reset, and instead added a space before the
quotes, the preview suddenly became correct, and I could then remove the
space in front of the quotes and it would stay correct. Once I pressed
OK this format would get saved, and I could use it again without it
getting messed up. Likewise if I added a format with, say, 5 spaces
in the quotes and no space before the quotes, in this way, then went to
cell formatting again and removed a space to four spaces, this didn't
get messed up. But if I removed another space, to 3 spaces, which is a
format I had previously used, then added a space, the format would get
messed up again. It seems that there is some format interpretation
going on behind the scenes when a space is added that is not going on
when a space is removed.

I think someone needs to have a careful look at how this section of the
code is operating, there are subtle bugs in it.

I will try to install the beta as soon as I can, and will test again
and report back.

Thanks again for the help

are saved in native ods format.

I'm using a custom format code on a cell in Calc to get a value
displayed as a rate per hour.

This is the format code I want:

 [$R-1C09] #,##0.00 / hour;[$R-1C09]-#,##0.00 / hour

As it is, that code works fine. When I enter a value of 300, I can use
it in calculations, and it gets displayed as R 300 / hour, just as I
 want.

The problem comes in when I close the file. Even if all I do is enter
the correct formula as above, then save and close the file, when I
re-open the file, the field now displays as R 300.00 / hoRr. When I
go to the cell format, I see the format code has changed to:

 [$R-1C09] #,##0.00 / hRRr;[$R-1C09]-#,##0.00 / hoRr

This happens every time I close the file. When I re-open it, the
format has changed. This is not caused by the save, because once
edited, the formula stays correct for the duration of the session,
 until I close the file.

It's not just that hour has changed to hRRr and hoRr, but the
space between the 0.00 and the quote has gone (in fact, the quote
now has two spaces after it, instead of the one before I closed the
file). This space is very important. If I edit the formula as it is,
and just change the hRRr to hour, the format code is removed. On
the previous version of LibreOffice I had (not sure which version
that was, though, either 3.5 or 3.6 something), it would have no
effect. After editing the format code, the value would still be
displayed wrong, and going back to the cell format, I would see that
the format code had reverted back to the wrong code. Only if I put a
space between the 0.00 and quote would the code retain the hour.
Now, on this version of LibreOffice, if I don't put a space between
the 0.00 and the quote, if I just change the hRRr and hoRr to
hour, the custom format code is entirely removed, and the format
reverts to a standard number. If I correct the format, it stays until
I close the file, and then once I re-open it, it has reverted to the
 incorrect custom format code.

I have had this issue in several files, and can re-create it by
opening a new file, putting 300 in the first cell, going to Format
 | cells choosing currency and putting ' / hour' after both
0.00. This shows correctly. Then I save the file, close it, and
re-open it and it has mangled the custom format code.

Can anybody else confirm that they are also having this problem? Does
anybody know anything about this problem? Should I submit a bug for
this problem, and if so, where? At https://bugs.freedesktop.org/ or at

I cannot reproduce the problem with LibreOffice 4.1. Please try it with

If you see the problem there too, it might defend on the locale and you
