In other words, if I have an address list with 30 addresses in Writer, but I want to move it over to the spreadsheet in address format, I don't want each line to be put in each cell...I want the address to show up in the spreadsheet as one complete address per cell. But because there is no capability to find/replace the paragraph end, I cannot make the lines appear in the same cell, with a soft return in the same cell. I've always had the impression that frames and images act the same in terms of anchoring and subsequent positioning (including sometimes unexpected behaviour of paragraph anchoring), and images can disappear from within frames, so frames don't seem to be a cure-all. - Robert On Sun, 25 Oct 2020, Dan Lewis wrote: There is a reason why graphics should be inserted in a frame and the latter should be anchored to an empty paragraph. RE: tired of the crashes
David - When a document is revised over and over again, after a while cruft can build up and cause problems. (This isn't just for OpenOffice.) If that is the problem, hopefully you just need to start afresh once and it will keep working for a long time. You could try selecting the entire document and then pasting it into a fresh document using Paste Special > Paste Unformatted Text. You'll get the content but will have to redo any formatting you have, hopefully just once. You should be able to set OpenOffice to save your document periodically. In LibreOffice this is under Tools > Options > Load/Save General. I think it's similar in OpenOffice. This is an OTF font that requires special handling. According to the usage notes (notice d’utilisation) on the provider's Web site, the font is compatible with LibreOffice version 5.3 and higher. According to the FAQ, 'OpenOffice does not handle contextual variants ... On the other hand, LibreOffice does handle them' (dated 2017 Nov 10, my translation). As far as I can tell, neither of these things helps what I'm referring to. As an example: let's say you apply the Emphasis character style to a sequence of characters, and then later want to add some following characters that don't have that style. If you just position your cursor after the last styled character, the text you add will also be styled. You need to position your cursor after the first _unstyled_ character that follows, insert your new text, and then back up and delete that first unstyled (and now unwanted) character. With RevealCodes turned on in WordPerfect, you would just position your cursor after the end-of-style indicator and start entering unstyled text. - Robert - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

You're right that what is wanted is not an exact display of the actual internal coding but rather some visual indication of what's going on. Re: Read only
With my e-mail client, if I open the document directly from the e-mail client then it is read-only. Clicking on the 'Edit File' button in the toolbar offers the possibility of editing a copy of the file. Alternatively, if I first save the document somewhere and then open it from there, it is not read-only and I can edit it immediately. Re: Text and pictures
In Writer, right-click on the picture that you've inserted into the document and look for the Wrap item in the menu that pops up. Experiment with the different options. You may also want to experiment with the Alignment item in the same menu. That does not make the feature undesirable. It makes it costly. Even with agreement among developers, there is the problem of enrolling open-source developers to investigate and introduce it. And it won't happen by unilateral contribution alone. There must be serious testing and other work to ensure that nothing is destabilized. Set up stylist to display _applied_ _character_ styles. setup the formatting bar, to display the current paragraph style name, along with some of the more commonly changed parameters. That setup will provide more useful information about what is going with the styles one is using, than the reveal codes extension that was created almost a decade ago. My guess is that that will provide the functional equivalent of reveal codes as used in WP. No, not at all, in my experience. One of the things RevealCodes was useful for was positioning the cursor inside or outside a given style setting. For example, type 2 characters, say 'ab', and bold one of them. Position the cursor between them and type another character. As far as I can tell, you have no control over whether you get the style of the 'a' or the style of the 'b'. Another example: highlight some text, then delete the highlighted text. Most of the time the highlighting style will still be hiding there waiting for you, and when you type something else it gets highlighted. With something like RevealCodes you would be able to see it there and delete it. Without being able to see what's going on, you (I) end up having to apply new character styles on top of existing ones blindly, with the result being a dog's breakfast that clogs up the document and may be difficult to debug. If I sound unhappy, it's because lately I've been spending a lot of time doing multiple revisions of such documents written by others. I recently looked into the content.xml file for one of these documents, which was responding slowly, and it was horrifying how messy it had become. - Robert - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
Re: Codes
Pat - About Reveal Codes: I loved them in WP, and there's no reason why something comparable couldn't be implemented in OO and in fact somebody cobbled together a kind of demo at one point (in spite of what people say about styles). But we don't have them. About styles: Yes, that's the elegant way to use OO and it would be good to learn about them. However, it doesn't obviate the need for something like Reveal Codes sometimes. (If you were really masochistic you could unzip your .odt file and examine the content.xml file to diagnose your problem.) About your actual problem: I really don't understand what's happening to you, or where the blue could be coming from if you've stripped all formatting by using Notepad.
