Re: Importing PDF form into OO 4.0.1
Jim McLaughlin jjim.mclaugh...@gmail.com: I am looking for a way to import into OO a form created by a third party with Adobe in PDF format. I want to be able to fill out the form with my computer, rather than print a blank form and fill in by hand. For reasons not known to me, the third party did not create a fillable PDF form, which I can fill out with the 'puter, either within OO or with Adobe reader. so, the form is just a compilation of field labels and series of underscores or drawn lines or rectangles instead of meaningful input boxes. in such a case, i think, the easiest way is to take snapshots in good resolution, insert them into a writer document in background and place frames on top of those lines or rectangles. i used to do so. another way is to insert typewriter comments over the input lines in a pdf reader. adobe's latest reader allows typewriting. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Is it a known OO-Writer's oddity? Any fixing action to suggest? there may be some legitimate causes and some bug-related causes. the former include at least the following: (1) the jpg is so large that only a blank page can hold it, while the page before it is not really blank but contains some whitespace characters, such as spaces or empty paragraphs; (2) the jpg is anchored to a page rather than to a character or paragraph, and there is not enough text in the document to fill all the preceding pages; so, some blank pages are added. however, i have also experienced the random addition of the pages. they are cured by switching to the page preview mode, possibly because openoffice does more precise computing at that time, which would be impossible in the 'as fast as you type' mode. also, openoffice does some reformatting when it saves a document for the first time. for example, i often have less lines fitting a page after saving and reopening. i think that is because it transfers the more precise 64-bit numbers which the program itself uses to the less precise #.### format that the odt document uses. moreover, i used to find after examining the odt's content.xml that what i type in as, eg, 1.25 cm tab-stop position is conveerted to, eg, 1.251 cm by some malfunctional rounding procedure. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

I wish to have access to both word-processing programmes on the same computers and to convert documents from one to the other at will. now you can see that it is posible. however, the more times you transfer from one program to another, the grater is the chance to get an error. you should remember that microsoft does not publish the '.doc' format's specification, and it is therefore impossible to follow that specification exactly. it is a good practice to keep backups of important files somewhere to prevent data loss. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

On Wed, 04 Jun 2014 21:19:51 -, Colleen McCartin fruitofthespirit...@gmail.com wrote: Okay, I'll try. Let's start from the email side. Normally I open an email to compose, write it, and then go to my file that is an open office doc and cut and paste the business signature (Living Waters..) to emails that it is appropriate. Now, I went into the doc and made some changes, then cut and pasted it as I normally do, but the spacing changed. I tried to delete possible formatting, etc but it still came up with the same wide spacing. So, I thought if I inserted a frame (text box) on an open office doc then cut and pasted the email sig (text) from the original doc into the frame, that I could then cut and paste it into the email and all format would stay the same because it is in the frame. So once the frame had the text pasted in it, fonts sizes etc (see the attached sent previously), I tried to copy the frame to paste onto the email as my sig. i think i have an idea. when you copy something from one document to another, all the attributes of that text are also copied, including manual formatting (font, size, line spacing etc) and that applied by means of the styles. however, if a style in the source document has the same name as one in the destination document, and if the copied text is formatted with that style, then it is not the style which is copied but only its name, whereas the attributes associated with the style are taken from the destination document's style having that name. suppose you have some text in a document, to which the paragraph style 'default' is applied, and that style has single line spacing. in another document there also exists the paragraph style 'default', but it has double line spacing. when you copy the text from the first document to the second one, it switches from the first document's 'default' style to the second document's one and therefore becomes double spaced. that seems to be your case. to fix it, you should apply some style other than 'default' to your frame. alternatively, you may apply another style to the destination text or remove expanded spacing from the destination's 'default' and set it manually where necessary. note that if you used some custom style instead of 'default', it would be enough to simply rename it, while renaming automatic styles, such as 'default', is not allowed. that is a case against the use of the automatic styles. - To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Can someone confirm? I just used one of the built-in templates in AOO 4.1 to start my presentation I expected the exported PPT to look exactly the same as in AOO... i checked that template. it seems to be the 'blue border' background chosen on the 2nd step of the presentation wizard. it is not autofitted at all, but rather tiled (see format - page - background). because its size is exactly the same as the default slide size (which is 28 x 21 cm), it fills the entire screen. however, when exporting to powerpoint, everything is messed up because powerpoint's size handling is somewhat flawed. eg, when i create a rectangle in powerpoint and set its width to, say, 10 cm, it appears to be about 9 cm according to the ruler at the top of the slide (at least in powerpoint 2000 installed on my organisation's computers). if after that i set the page width to 10 cm too, the rectangle does not take the full width of the page, just like your slide's background. so, powerpoint seems to use different units for page sizes and object sizes: the centimeters of page width are larger than those of a rectangle width. it is quite idiosyncratic, but you have to stay with it. i do not think that openoffice should adopt this unnatural measuring convention only to be compatible with powerpoint, although some size adjustment while exporting may be of use. in your case, try unticking the 'format - page - background - tile' box and ticking the 'format - page - background - autofit'. --- List Conduct Guidelines: http://openoffice.apache.org/list-conduct.html To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org

Re: OpenOffice Corrupted
*Today I had a big problem with OpenOffice. A couple of days ago, I had to force quit OpenOffice, because it was preventing me from shutting down my computer. I used an OpenOffice file today, when I initialized OO, I got a dialogue box that read: The last time you opened OpenOffice, it unexpectedly quit while reopening windows. Do you want to try to reopen its windows again? The box gives the options to reopen, or don't reopen. I've tried clicking on BOTH of those options, and the same thing happens, *NOTHING!* I can't get rid of this dialogue box, and I tried deleting Open Office, and re-installing it does no good, the box keeps coming back. it's a known issue, see here: https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.0.1+Release+Notes#AOO4.0.1ReleaseNotes-KnownIssues --- List Conduct Guidelines: http://openoffice.apache.org/list-conduct.html To unsubscribe, e-mail: users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org For additional commands, e-mail: users-h...@openoffice.apache.org
