apache openoffice has dropped support of wordperfect file format because of
licence incompatibility. pre-apache versions of openoffice, known as
openoffice.org, do support wordperfect. so, you can download openoffice.org 3.3
from the openoffice.org website. also, libreoffice, which is another

I am looking for a way to import into OO a form created by a third party
with Adobe in PDF format. I want to be able to fill out the form with my
computer, rather than print a blank form and fill in by hand.

For reasons not known to me, the third party did not create a fillable PDF
form, which I can fill out with the 'puter, either within OO or with Adobe
 reader.

so, the form is just a compilation of field labels and series of underscores or
drawn lines or rectangles instead of meaningful input boxes. in such a case, i
think, the easiest way is to take snapshots in good resolution, insert them
into a writer document in background and place frames on top of those lines or
rectangles. i used to do so.

another way is to insert typewriter comments over the input lines in a pdf
reader. adobe's latest reader allows typewriting.

the unicode character codes for musical characters are summed up here:

Is it a known OO-Writer's oddity? Any fixing action to suggest?

there may be some legitimate causes and some bug-related causes. the former
include at least the following:

(1) the jpg is so large that only a blank page can hold it, while the page
before it is not really blank but contains some whitespace characters, such as
spaces or empty paragraphs;

(2) the jpg is anchored to a page rather than to a character or paragraph, and
there is not enough text in the document to fill all the preceding pages; so,
some blank pages are added.

however, i have also experienced the random addition of the pages. they are
cured by switching to the page preview mode, possibly because openoffice does
more precise computing at that time, which would be impossible in the 'as fast
as you type' mode.

also, openoffice does some reformatting when it saves a document for the first
time. for example, i often have less lines fitting a page after saving and
reopening. i think that is because it transfers the more precise 64-bit numbers
which the program itself uses to the less precise #.### format that the odt
document uses. moreover, i used to find after examining the odt's content.xml
that what i type in as, eg, 1.25 cm tab-stop position is conveerted to, eg,
1.251 cm by some malfunctional rounding procedure.

yes, offset is not the best deal here. better, place the caret somewhere in
your first paragraph, open 'format - paragraph - text flow', tick 'insert
page', choose 'before' from the drop-down list, tick 'with page style', choose
the style you need and set the 'page number' field to 10.

the bad side is that page 10 will be not the first but the second page of the

printing, previewing or exporting as pdf. to prevent this, uncheck 'print
automatically inserted blank pages' under 'file - printer settings - options'

another defect is that the 'page count' field will also be incremented by one.

for the community:

javascript-based input boxes have never been very reliable. where has gone the old
plain link to http://www.openoffice.org/download/other/? it seems to employ
an easier script and contains other valuable information. it would be quite precious
in the original poster's case.

the only substitute i have found is the link 'Alternative download mirrors
(binaries)' pointing to sourceforge's list of files. that list is good but not at all
user-friendly, especially when compared with the /download/other page. also,
the link's name is misleading because it actually provides the same
sourceforge-chosen mirror.

the link provided within the noscript tag,
http://www.apache.org/dyn/aoo-closer.cgi/openoffice/, is not very reliable too. for my
location, it suggested the http://apache-mirror.rbc.ru/pub/apache/openoffice/ mirror,
which does not host the binaries.

to sum up, i think what is desirable is an alternative download page based on plain
html or server-side script. also, the link to
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/ should be
accompanied by some instructions like these:

from the list of files at the bottom of the page, navigate to the folder

version/binaries/language

and download the file

Apache_OpenOffice_version_os_platform_installation_type_language.ext

where

version is the version number (eg 4.1.1),

language is the code of your language (eg en-US),

os is the name of your operating system (Win, Linux or MacOS),

platform is 'x86' for 32-bit computers and 'x86-64' for 64-bit ones,

installation_type is 'install' for a full installation set and 'langpack' for
a language pack (for linux there are also suffixes '-deb' and '-rpm' depending on the
distribution you use)

and ext is the file extension (eg '.exe').

word is still on your computer, but the '.doc' files are now opened with with
openoffice, most probably because you have chosen to make such an association
during the installation process.

to open a '.doc' file with word, either:

(1) right-click the file and choose word from the 'open with' list

or

(2) launch word from the start menu and make use of the 'file - open' menu item
or an analogous item on the ribbon.

if you want to restore the association of the '.doc' files with word, choose
'other program' (or similar; my windows is not in english), select word and
tick the 'use this program by default' option.

2] A document opened and edited in OpenOffice, then transferred to another
computer on which is installed MSWORD, can not be opened in MSWORD.

most likely, you have saved the file as '.odt' rather than '.doc'. word can
open the '.odt' files only if the appropriate plugin is installed.

to save as '.doc', choose 'microsoft word 97/200/xp (.doc)' from the drop-down
list in the 'file - save as' dialogue.

to set '.doc' as the default format, choose the same from the 'tools - options
- load/save - general - always save as' list with 'text document' in the
'document type' list.

I wish
to have access to both word-processing programmes on the same computers and to
convert documents from one to the other at will.

now you can see that it is posible. however, the more times you transfer from
one program to another, the grater is the chance to get an error. you should
remember that microsoft does not publish the '.doc' format's specification, and
it is therefore impossible to follow that specification exactly. it is a good
practice to keep backups of important files somewhere to prevent data loss.

maybe your first page had no number and you deleted the page break between it and the second page having thus applied the first page's no-number page style to all other pages. to bring page numbers back, enable header or footer in your page style's preferences (format - page - header or footer - header or footer on), place the caret into the header or footer area and insert the page number field (insert - fields - page number). if you want the first page not to be numbered, then you should apply different styles to it and to subsequent pages. to do that, place the caret somewhere in the second page's first paragraph, switch on the option 'format - paragraph - text flow - breaks - with page style' and choose the page's current style (it is displayed on the status bar at the bottom of the screen between the page number and the language) from the list. then place the caret somewhere on the first page, open the panel 'format - styles and formatting', go to the 'page styles' tab on the

Okay, I'll try. Let's start from the email side. Normally I open an email
to compose, write it, and then go to my file that is an open office doc and
cut and paste the business signature (Living Waters..) to emails that
it is appropriate.

Now, I went into the doc and made some changes, then cut and pasted it as I
normally do, but the spacing changed. I tried to delete possible
formatting, etc but it still came up with the same wide spacing.

So, I thought if I inserted a frame (text box) on an open office doc then
cut and pasted the email sig (text) from the original doc into the frame,
that I could then cut and paste it into the email and all format would stay
the same because it is in the frame.

So once the frame had the text pasted in it, fonts sizes etc (see the
attached sent previously), I tried to copy the frame to paste onto the
email as my sig.

i think i have an idea. when you copy something from one document to another,
all the attributes of that text are also copied, including manual formatting
(font, size, line spacing etc) and that applied by means of the styles.
however, if a style in the source document has the same name as one in the
destination document, and if the copied text is formatted with that style, then
it is not the style which is copied but only its name, whereas the attributes
associated with the style are taken from the destination document's style
having that name.

suppose you have some text in a document, to which the paragraph style
'default' is applied, and that style has single line spacing. in another
document there also exists the paragraph style 'default', but it has double
line spacing. when you copy the text from the first document to the second one,
it switches from the first document's 'default' style to the second document's
one and therefore becomes double spaced.

that seems to be your case. to fix it, you should apply some style other than
'default' to your frame. alternatively, you may apply another style to the
destination text or remove expanded spacing from the destination's 'default'
and set it manually where necessary.

note that if you used some custom style instead of 'default', it would be
enough to simply rename it, while renaming automatic styles, such as 'default',
is not allowed. that is a case against the use of the automatic styles.

stretched to fill the whole screen and as such with text centered on

such text gets overlaid over the borders of the bitmap.

What is going on here?. Obviously something having to do with AOO 4.1
Impress making the background bitmap stretched to fill the screen,
and on the contrary, that attribute is not carried over to the PPT

you need not know the screen size but only the page size of your slide (format -

Any ideas of what might be going on? Can someone confirm?
I just used one of the built-in templates in AOO 4.1 to start my
presentation

I expected the exported PPT to look exactly the same as in AOO...

i checked that template. it seems to be the 'blue border' background chosen on the
2nd step of the presentation wizard. it is not autofitted at all, but rather tiled
(see format - page - background). because its size is exactly the same as the
default slide size (which is 28 x 21 cm), it fills the entire screen.

however, when exporting to powerpoint, everything is messed up because
powerpoint's size handling is somewhat flawed. eg, when i create a rectangle in
powerpoint and set its width to, say, 10 cm, it appears to be about 9 cm
according to the ruler at the top of the slide (at least in powerpoint 2000
installed on my organisation's computers). if after that i set the page width
to 10 cm too, the rectangle does not take the full width of the page, just like
your slide's background.

so, powerpoint seems to use different units for page sizes and object sizes:
the centimeters of page width are larger than those of a rectangle width. it is
quite idiosyncratic, but you have to stay with it. i do not think that
openoffice should adopt this unnatural measuring convention only to be
compatible with powerpoint, although some size adjustment while exporting may
be of use.

in your case, try unticking the 'format - page - background - tile' box and ticking
the 'format - page - background - autofit'.

I downloaded it, and replaced my old edition by the new one. But finally, when
I tried to use it, I received the message: Not compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8.

sad but true, openoffice 4.1 is not compatible with pre-10.7 mac osx systems
because apple switched from 32bit to 64bit since 10.7, and openoffice
developers cannot afford supporting both versions. however, openoffice 4.0.1 is
good too, and you may continue using it on your 10.6 system. i used even 3.4.1
up to a week ago and was quite happy with it.

I did not find how to recover my previous edition of Open Office. Thanks for
explaining what I should do for using again Open Office.

please download from here:

On recent versions of Mac OS X it might happen, especially after a Force quit, that the following error message appears:
Restore Windows - The application OpenOffice.org was forced to quit while trying to restore its windows. Do you want to try to
restore its windows again?. If you cannot get rid of it: Option-click the Go menu; choose Library from the
menu to open the folder in the Finder; click on the folder Saved Application State; delete the file
org.openoffice.script.savedState.

this problem has been fixed in the latest version, 4.1.0, which you may
download from openoffice.org/download. however, it does not work with mac osx
10.6 and earlier.

when you create a section, you may tick the options 'protect' or 'protect with
password'. on the other hand, you may specify that it be editable even in a
document opened read-only. after the section has been created, the settings are
still editable through the 'format - sections' dialogue.

most probably, that message comes from a trial version of microsoft office that
has been once installed on your computer and whose trial period has run out.
you still may open .doc and .xls files through the 'file - open' dialogue or
you may change the file associations in your system: right-click on a .doc
file, choose 'open with', select openoffice from the list that appears, tick
the option 'always use this program for this filetype' (or something similar)
and click ok; then repeat for .xls and other types of files. (i assume you use
windows because the problem looks microsoft specific.)

no, you need not pay. if you have downloaded your copy of openoffice from a
malicious site, you should better redownload and reinstall it from
www.openoffice.org. if that is not the case, then the message seems to
originate somewhere between openoffice and the printer driver. what exactly
does it say and what program does it want you to install? also, do you print

brian is right that in calc you cannot do that. however, in writer it is possible. just copy one
column of your spreadsheet, create an empty writer document, past the table thereto as html (edit
- past special - html). the text colour should be copied as well as the text itself. then
you may find all yellow text (edit - find and replace - more options - format (with the
cursor in the 'search for' box) - font effects - color) and replace it with some marking
word such as 'for deletion'. after that you may copy the column back to the spreadsheet and follow
brian's advice to sort the marked rows out and delete them. (note that all the formulas in the
copied column will be lost, so you will have to create a backup of it if necessary.)

well, first of all, you should install it (usually by double-clicking on the
downloaded file). Have you done that? if yes, then it must be in the start menu
(the headers of your message suppose you use windows 7). you may also search
for 'soffice' on your disk and create a shortcut for the 'soffice.exe' file
