Not sure what that means. I haven't even seen the feature you are talking
about. When I type in Writer there's no guessing going on at all, as far as
I remember (I didn't use Apache OpenOffice for a long time now).

I truly get where you with this. Let me put the OpenOffice history in 
perspective. I will not discuss LibreOffice although others may.

A preamble about the history of Apache OpenOffice. In 2011 Oracle donated 
OpenOffice.org to the ASF through the Apache Incubator. IBM hired a number of 
the Oracle developers who were being let go and allowed a number of developers 
and QA personnel to contribute. They also contributed code from Symphony which 
was based on OpenOffice.org. This is the sidebar.

There is also a volunteer effort at l...@openoffice.apache.org where volunteers 
can help translate the UI, Help, and Website to a language. Volunteers have 
supported over 41 languages! If yours is not then you can volunteer if you are 
so inclined.

OpenOffice developers have taken the position that very little change to the UI 
is what are users want and need.

Yes this can be what some developers do, we are avoiding this for the most 
part. If you have an example of UI that has changed since 4.0 then please bring 
it up.

Well Microsoft is one of the largest companies in the world and they have been 
investing in Excel and Word for 35 years …
OpenOffice was developed by Star since 1990 and purchased by Sun and then 
Oracle then you can add in the IBM contribution. So you then have 23 years of 
development by corporations. It may not be the same order of magnitude, but it 
is closer to 1000 to 1 than a 1,000,000,000 to 1.

Right now we are doing what we can to support are millions of users to protect 
them from issues.

approximately two and a half years, I get absolutely nowhere. If I ask how to, 
then I receive, unhelpful, sarcastic or downright rude comments from various 
people who I don`t know. I rue the day I ever downloaded Apache, it`s rubbish 
anyway and regularly doesn't` do what it says on the tin. I usually mark my 
emails as phishing scam in the fond hope that it will eventually p*** someone 
at Apache off as much as they have me.  Good luck!

few (if any) are the same unpaid volunteers who wrote the software you
have been given for free.

By analogy, if someone injures themselves with a power tool without
knowing or learning how to use it, who is to blame? The same holds true
in the case of software that does not function exactly the way the user
thinks it should.

The (crap) feature is called "Word Completion", part of the
"AutoCorrect" facility and can be turned on and off as required.

The software comes with a in-built *Help* facility, accessed by tapping
the keyboard *F1* function key. The in-built Help reads:

"/Turning Off AutoCorrect /
/By default, OpenOffice automatically corrects many common typing
errors and applies formatting while you type. /
/To quickly undo an automatic correction or completion, press Ctrl+Z. /
/To turn off most AutoCorrect features, remove the check mark from
the menu Format - AutoCorrect - While Typing./"

A more detailed explanation is:

  * From Writer's main menu select "/Tools -> AutoCorrect Options.../"


  * In the "/AutoCorrect/" dialog (window) that opens, click the "/Word
Completion/" tab and click to untick/uncheck the "/Enable word
completion/" box


  * Click the "/OK/" button and the crap will stop.
