You don't need a password to download the most recent version of Apache

Re: Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-09 Thread Alan B
Hello Linda,

I opened the file, "Active Provider Directory 20220902", in Calc. The
columns I'm seeing with lots of spaces are additional details like
ADDRESS2, OTHER SPECIALTIES, OTHER LANGUAGES. Not a surprise they wouldn't
be completed.

Things you are interested in, like speciality and location, have values for
every row of the file I imported.

Columns, PROVIDER NAME, ADDRESS 1, CITY, STATE, ZIP, COUNTY, PROVIDER TYPE,
PRIMARY SPECIALTY, OTHER SPECIALTIES, CONTRACTS and a few more have values
in every row of the sheet.

Using Calc "AutoFilter" it is a few clicks to filter by CITY and PRIMARY
SPECIALTY, for example.
e.g. filter for city = "Athens" and primary speciality = "Allergy and
Immunology". Applying those filters gets four results out of the 270,993
rows in the file.
Not sure how you're opening the file.

If you're not opening the file in Calc, that's step 1.

#1 Find the downloaded file and right-click it then click "open with Calc"
or "Calc" on the menu. If that's not there, look for the "Open with" option
on the menu and click that. The submenu that opens will have Calc on the
list. Click it.

#2 Calc will present a "Text Import" dialog before the data is displayed in
the spreadsheet. In that dialog set "Separator Options" to "Separated by"
and be certain the ONLY option checked is "Comma". Then click "OK"

#3 Now that the file is open before you click Data > AutoFilter on the
menu. The column titles on the first row will now have little downward
pointing triangles next to each title. Click on those as needed to filter
the list to see only what you want.

VERY IMPORTANT step saver if you want to refer to the file again. The file
is still .csv. AutoFilter cannot be saved in .csv.
#4 Click File > Save on the menu. A warning about "Confirm File Format"
will appear. Click the "Use ODF Format" button and then click the "Save"
button.

Next time you want to use the file, open the spreadsheet file (ODF format
file), not the .csv file, and your AutoFilter will still be in place and
ready to use.

Re: Help Making Sense of .csv Files

2023-02-09 Thread Gerry Dutchie
Hi Linda,

I have checked the first csv-file on the website you mentioned. It seems a
normal file although not all the fields are filled with data. Hence probably
your impression of 'huges spaces' in between data?

It is a comma delimited csv file, this means that de fields (e.g. name,
address, town, etc)  are seperated by commas and all information of one doctor
is put in one long line whereby the bits and pieces are seperated by comma's.

OpenOffice can seperate these lines into columns:

1. On your desktop you will find the OpenOffe icon.
2. Use File Explorer (I work on Windows) or similar for your operating system.
3. Drag the downloaded csv file and drop it on the OpenOffice icon.
4. OO will respond with a dialogbox in with you tick Comma under 'Seperated'
and remove any other ticks that may be there. The dialog will show you the
results allready.  (Other csv files may use ; or tab as delimiter, which you
also find in the dialog).
5. Click OK. The file will be distributed over columns. The first line shows
the names of the fields, e.g. what data is presented in the column.

Now you can proceed to work with it as you are used to, using lists; e.g. sort,
search etc.

Good luck & kind regards from The Royalk Kingdom of The Netherlands ;-)))

Re: Help!!!!!

2022-10-19 Thread PCS

I use locked files as a work-around for stationery because Mac OS hasn’t done
that right since the classic OS, i.e. since before OS-X. I don’t remember how
locked OpenOffice files could be unlocked (I haven’t used OO recently), but
locked (i.e. Read Only) LibreOffice documents have an “Edit Document” button
just below the top RH corner that unlocks them. When you try to type into a
locked RTF document it opens a small menu panel, maybe OpenOffice did it that
way? But if there is no convenient way to unlock a document after you have
opened it you can, on the Mac, right-click on the document’s icon, select “Get
Info” in the pop-up menu, and untick the “Locked” box, then the document will
no longer be locked. I don’t know how to do this on Windows, but I’m sure it
must have some equivalent procedure.

Peter.

What error messages do you sere when you try to edit/update the sheet?

Note, the "Record Changes" option has no impact on a read only file.

Try finding the file with your OS (operating system's) file manager (eg.
Windows Explorer) and if the file is set read only by the OS,
untick/uncheck that setting in the file manager's properties option.

An alternative workaround would be to select the entire contents of the
original worksheet and paste into a new empty worksheet, then save the
copy under a slightly different name. If the new copy of the worksheet
is working as required you can delete the original

It might help if you said what your aims were!

when on text documents I choose landscape and then click on 2

That's exactly what is supposed to happen. Columns work the way that
a newspaper is structured: as you enter text, the first column is
filled first and text flows naturally to the next column when the
first is full - just as text flows from page to page when you don't
have columns. If you wish to skip to the next column before one
column is full, you can do this using Insert | Manual Break... | Type
| Column break.

But it sounds as if what you may really be trying to do is to lay out
text in the two sides of your page independently, in which case
columns are not the way to go. Instead, consider using a table (Table
| Insert > | Table...) with one row and two columns. Tables do not
need to have borders, so they need not be visible in the final document.

Are you perhaps trying to create a booklet, by folding multiple
sheets in landscape orientation? If so, you may like to investigate
OpenOffice's useful Brochure facility. You create a document in
portrait orientation and with the final actual page size - half the
paper size - and then print it with the paper in landscape
orientation. OpenOffice takes care of sorting the pages of the
document so that they print in such a way that the stack of sheets
can be folded into a properly sequenced booklet.

I trust this helps.

Re: HELP WITH MAC VERSION & MORE

2022-02-23 Thread PCS

I do not have the technical expertise to be able to decipher the error messages
generated by the system, and I believe they are intended to enable developers
to find bugs and fix them in future versions, not to enable you to be provided
with feedback, so for a glitch like you have described I would quit the app and
re-launch it, or Force Quit and re-launch it, if necessary, though that appears
to have happened already in your case.

If that hasn’t fixed the problem I would shut down and restart the computer,
then try the app again, and if that doesn’t fix it I would uninstall the OO app
(just move it from the Apps folder to the trash initially, and leave it there
until you’ve sorted the problem, “just in case") and download a virgin copy of
the app and install that to see if that fixes the problem, then empty the
corrupted copy of the app from the trash if the app re-install fixes the
problem. This is only a user work-around, not a technician’s fix, but it has
worked for me on occasion in the past.

My apologies if I am stating the obvious and you have already done what I am
suggesting.

Unfortunately, if that doesn’t work I don’t have any idea how to fix the
problem, other than to suspect a possible glitch in the OS requiring it to be
fixed or reinstalled, or you could update instead of reinstall if you have not
got the latest version (I generally defer major updates until most of the
glitches are sorted out by the early adopters), but I have never had to do an
OS reinstall, other than the time I corrupted an OS update by doing something
stupid part-way through the install process and turned the computer into a
paperweight. I have some gripes with Apple Computer but I have always found the
Mac OS to be stable and reliable.

If you do suspect the OS may have a glitch, do NOT just go ahead and do a
reinstall, that is a tedious, time consuming job. Instead begin by booting into
the Mac’s diagnostics at startup, i.e. press the power button and immediately
hold down the D key until diagnostics begins. I have not used that since the
time I turned my MacMini into a paperweight, quite a few years ago now, and I
don't have time to check it now, so I can’t promise it will enable you to solve
your problem, but if all else has failed it could be worth looking at the
diagnostics before you go as far as reinstalling the OS. But be careful, bad
things might happen if you do the wrong thing there. However I would be
surprised if the things I first suggested don’t fix your problem, I can’t
recall ever having had an app problem that was caused by the OS.

Regards,

PCS.

Thank you for showing me the way back to you (email address) .
And for fairly quick replies.

A friend directed me to the "turn it off; unplug; wait; re-plug; and turn on"

Then, yes, I did the 2 step process. And I've been busily working away since.

thank you, very much,

Re: Help on using Open Office Calc

2021-06-26 Thread Alan B
No. There is not. Not dealing with a corporation like Adobe, Microsoft, etc.

There are organizations that provide paid support for OpenOffice. And there
are free/community help offerings.

You can check here to look for support solutions that come closest to
meeting your needs.
https://www.openoffice.org/support/

There is one link on the page above that purports to provide a link to free
Calc lessons.
http://openofficeschool.org/

I do not have any insight into the quality or value of any offerings at the
links provided. Please, explore and find what works best for you.

Hi Pat,
This is an email based volunteer staffed support list. Sorry no phone.

However many helpful people will try to assist you. For my own effort, let
me refer you to:

Instructions, with pictures, for creating labels in Writer. Bonus,
screenshots are from a Mac. Last updated Feb, 2020
https://www.wikihow.com/Print-Address-Labels-Using-OpenOffice

More instructions with pictures. The web page is rather recent as it was
last updated July 2018. The screenshots are from Windows though which may
make following them a bit more difficult
https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/OOo3_User_Guides/Writer_Guide/Print_labels_from_db

Try the above and if you don't succeed get back to the list telling us
which instructions you used and at what step you encountered problems.

Previous experience tells that your file will be utterly corrupt. Try the
methods in this post, as soon as possible, in the hope of recovering part or
all of it.

The damage is possibly due to over-hasty power-off of computer or closure of
laptop lid, before the file housekeeping has been written to disk. Do not let
your computer sleep/hibernate with a document open. When you have formally
closed down the computer, wait five or ten seconds before pulling the power
lead or closing the laptop lid, to allow the internal buffers of the hard drive
flush to disk

As soon as possible try the methods in this tutorial
See
[Tutorial]
How to find and un-delete AOO temporary files for detailed instructions
on how to

a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the
file (is there something similar on MacOS and Linux?);

b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was
when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;

c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which
have since been deleted;

d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and
then deleted. This will recover your file as it was when you last opened or you
last saved it.

There will be nothing usable in your damaged file - waste no time with it. Try
the recovery methods above.

You should know that your email will be stored permanently on a public
server. It is unwise to send personal information to a public emailing list.

If you have task master on your computer (Control+Alt+Delete), look for
any listing of soffice. Delete all of them. This should solve the
problem, and you should not have to uninstall OpenOffice.

Until now.   At one point I tried to repair but the repair program won't work

I tried using Revo uninstaller but it does the same thing as well you will not

Re: Help with document

2020-03-04 Thread Alan B
Hello Bella,

Some background info that I hope is helpful, re:templates...

If the last part of the file name provided by the university was .ott it is
a template file, e.g. university.ott. If not .ott at end of the name it is
not a template file.

If it is a template file like university.ott...:
* and university.ott is opened by double-click or File>Open... then the
document name at the top of the OpenOffice window will be "Untitled 1". It
will not be "university.ott" or "university"
* when saving the file for the first time OpenOffice will prompt for a file
name
* all edits will be saved in the file, "file-name-you-make-up.ODT"
* if "university.ott" template file is opened again none of the edits will
be there because that is not the file the edits were saved in

If for example you named the file "university" when saving, OpenOffice has
given it the full name "university.ODT". To find the file containing your
edits the file "university.ODT" must be opened.

Since you saved your edits but they weren't there when the file was opened
again I suspect you opened and edited a template file, .ott, then named and
closed it per the prompts when done. Then when opening the file again the
original "university.ott" file was opened and so no edits are found in the
file.

The "file-name-you-make-up.ODT", e.g. "university.ODT", is the file that
must be opened to see your edits.

If you're using Windows the file that was saved with all the edits is most
likely to be found in your "My Documents" folder.

Re: Help with document

2020-03-04 Thread David Belina
Unless your university specifically said it was either in Open Office format
(and was it a spreadsheet rather than a document?), Open Office might nor have
recognized the “import” when it was saving - especially if it happened in other
applications.
Perhaps your University should be advised of the problem.

Apach Open Office is not a company like Microsoft.  The is no company to
contact for help, just the mailing list that has been trying to help (and a few
really dedicated people on that list).

Jim;

I do not see any messages from you using this e-mail address so I have
no clue as to what your issue may have been. As far as a telephone
number there is not one. Apache OpeOffice® is an Open Source project
sponsered by the Apache® Software Foundation. The project is completely
developed and supported by volunteers. There are 2 major support
branches. This mailing list (mailto:users@openoffice.apache.org) which
you appear to be subscribed to or http://forum.openoffice.org/. both of

can assist you.

Also, to help replicate your conditions when testing, what version of

In what format do you Save your document? .odt/ods are OpenOffice's native
formats; these should not lose data. Saving or working in a non native format
can cause problems, as you are finding. Although OpenOffice supports .doc/.xls
formats, this support is limited.

Re: Help with installation

Kurt,

I have read, but not experienced, that some antivirus products affect
installation or launch of OpenOffice.

Your experience, install seems successful but programs won't launch, sounds
very much like the problem described with Windows 10 and Windows Defender
Antivirus.

To test this, turn off Windows Defender and then try and launch an
OpenOffice program. If it launches successfully then find the file
"soffice.bin" on your hard drive. Once found, modify Windows Defender
Antivirus settings to add the folder it is in to "Controlled Folder Access"
in Windows Defender Security Center.

My reference for this suggestion is here:
https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/87858-add-protected-folders-controlled-folder-access-windows-10-a.html

For the latest version of OpenOffice the soffice.bin file should be found
here...
C:\Program Files\OpenOffice 4\program\soffice.bin

Just try to save under an other name or in an other directory.
Probably there is a lock file with the same name in your directory, which could

Try renaming your OO user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer (sometimes
called Windows Explorer)
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a good
choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems.

that section, and in a table cell selects only that cell. Repeating
the Select All process selects everything, so you may need to do it
twice, depending on the context.

You can customise menus and sub-menus at Tools | Customise... |
Menus, but there is no option there to modify "context" (right-click)
menus, so you cannot do this yourself.

Can I (or can we) add this? No, because we - on the Users list - are
only users, like you, not developers. You are right to float this
idea here on the Users list first, as fellow users my be able to
offer advice and opinions; you may discover if there is general
support for the idea. But if you want to register your idea as an
enhancement, you need to do so at the web site (at the same place as
you report bugs). See

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/QA/HowToFileIssue ,
http://www.openoffice.org/qa/issue_handling/basic_rules.html , and

I trust this helps.

If you are in Writer, look to the bottom right where there are three

Click the single page view.

Ros, I don't frequently have access to Macs so please forgive if these
suggestions are off the mark.

Are you able to download other DMG files from other sites but not the
OpenOffice DMG? If yes, check if your antivirus/malware is blocking the
download.

And... if antivirus/malware is blocking the download, is the download being
attempted from the official site? https://www.openoffice.org If not using
the official site, please use it instead of the one you are using.

Re: Help numbering papers

2018-07-03 Thread Jean Lear
I do not know if I am over simplifying this or missing the point of the
requirement. I do not know what format the original document is but as a
test I used a writer page and made either a header or a footer on the page.
This can be made whatever size you wish and can be used to insert as much
information as you need and then at the position you want the number to
appear use the > Insert > Fields > Page number and insert your number
999001 on the first page. When you copy the same detail to the next page
the number will change to 999002 going to what ever number you want to go
to (999050)
I had a template set up for my use for Raffle Tickets which have a butt and
tickets four to a page and have the same number on the butt and the tear
off ticket. After setting up page one with numbers one to four, copy that
page, and then paste at the end of page one and the numbers roll on to
whatever number of tickets needed. I had a link to how this was done at -
http://www.oooforum.org/forum/viewtopic.phtml?t=34641 - but I could not
connect to this site as it timed out - may be too old to still exist.
Another idea may be to do a calc sheet with the numbers (999001 to 999050)
and do a mail merge with the original document.
This may give some ideas if I have not missed the point of the original
query.

Re: Help numbering papers

2018-07-02 Thread Andrew Pitonyak

I just wanted to clarify:

You start with a document that contains the text, which is always a
number, "9990001".

You open the document and print the document. The document prints the
text "9990001" as part of the document, but, after print, the text reads
"9990002". You save the document with the text 9990002.

OR

Were you hoping to print the document, request 10 copies, and have it
print with a different number each time?

OR

You have a single document containing the same text 50 times and each
copy contains a different number?

In my mind, I would write a macro to change the number then print the
document (if that workflow is possible), but I write many macros!

The name "myscript" comes to mind as a program that read some handwritings. I
should say, however, that I haven't used that in about 15 years and it failed
with my/my father's hand-writings, which were and are illegible. If one had a
nice disciplined hand I have no doubt that such a program could be reasonably
successful. Another possibility, probably with a greater success rate, is
voice transcription.

With such specialised programs, of either category, it is best to use the as
stand alone programs and transfer their output files into the word processor of
choice afterwards, which is a simple matter of /Insert /File.

As always, if there are no backups, there's probably nothing you or anyone
else can do about it, more than learning the lesson and start making daily

Either your computer crashed, or you powered down your computer before the
internal housekeeping had been completed. Your file is corrupted and
experience om OpenOffice User Forum indicates that nothing can be recovered
from it. However, you may recover some of the temporary files generated in the
process of editing. Details are given in this tutorial

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038

You should also use a utility such as Recuva which may also find some of these
deleted temporary files.

Note that help on the Forum and on this mailing list is given by volunteers in
their own time on a pro bono basis.

How do you archive/backup your system?
How frequently do you archive/backup your system?
Where do you store the archives/backups?

> I NEED SOMEONE TO HELP ME RECOVER THIS FILE!!!

I'll suggest that at this stage of the game, your only hope of being
able to recover the document, is to utilise the services of a firm that
specialises in forensic data recovery. The last time I priced these
services was almost a decade ago, but back then, US$100,000 was the
minimum charge, and the typical charge was a couple of orders of
magnitude higher.

Since I don't know exactly what you did and I don't have a clue about your
spreadsheet skills, I can only guess what you're doing wrong, so I'll just
say this:
What you see in a cell is a combination of what's actually in there and how
you format the cell. In your tool boxes there are tools for common formats,
such as currency, percent, date and number of decimals. You can control the
cell format in greater detail by right clicking a cell or cell range and
select ”Format cells”. If you do that and select the Number tab, there are
a lot of things to select from. You can even do your own number format by
selecting ”user defined” in the Category box and then enter your own format
in the format description field. If your cell contains the number
1234.56789 and your cell format is # ##0.0" km", then the cell will
display: 1 234.6 km.
The built in help describes this well, so take a look if you want.

Your first problem is that you don't have enough RAM for the OS you are
using.

The second problem is that you don't have enough RAM for the OS and
software that you want to use.

IOW, upgrade those computers to at least 8 GB RAM.

Have you tried to open it with LibreOffice? I think they worked a little

Why it is slow is something we can't answer without seeing the file.
There are a couple of things influence the process time.
1. The amount of data
2. The complexity of the calculations that need to be performed at
opening the file. You can switch it of under Tools -> Cell Contents ->
AutoCalculate.
3. Once you have opened the Excel file save it in .ods format because a
conversion takes always more time that opening in native language.
4. If all of above don't help persuade your employer to buy decent
computers.

The computers we are using are Windows 7 computers that run on a Core 2 Duo
with 2 GB of RAM and a 32-bit Operating System.
Please help,
Emma

You can do this very easily using the Navigator. To display this,
either go to View | Navigator (or press F5) or - probably more
conveniently - click the Navigator icon (it looks like a compass) at
the right edge of the window to open the Navigator in the Sidebar.
You will want to give your chapter headings a suitable paragraph
style - one of the numbered Heading styles; these will then appear in
the list of Headings in the Navigator. Just double-click the heading
there to jump to that position in the text.

There are other ways of marking positions in the text that also allow
this simple, direct method of accessing them - notably Bookmarks. Set
bookmarks using Insert | Bookmark... . Sections (Insert | Section...)
can also be accessed in this way.

I trust this helps.

The quick cure for this is to rename the OpenOffice user profile.

If you are using Windows close OpenOffice and the Quickstarter. Open File
Explorer. Copy and paste %appdata%\OpenOffice\4 in the File Explorer
Address Bar and press Enter. Rename the "user" folder - "user.old" is a
good choice. Start OpenOffice.

This cures most spellcheck problems

This is a symptom of incorrect installation of dictionaries and languages on
your computer. Note that correction, be it of spelling or grammar, is passive -
an error is flagged and it is your choice whether to apply the spelling

/View /Zoom and select 100%. Then go to bottom right of OO windows and select
the leftmost (single page ) of the three icons. Then adjust /View /Zoom to a
choice that best suits you.

Re: help with tabs

2016-08-04 Thread Martin Groenescheij

Some other possibilities as mentioned by others are:

The number of sheets at the left bottom corner should tell you the
number of sheets if

hat is more than you can see than check the following options:

Tabs are hidden behind the slider at the bottom just drag the left site
of the slider to the right.

Or sheets are hidden go to Format --> Sheet ... Show

Hi good morning,

I lost some tabs at the bottom of my spreadsheet and dont know how to
get them back. one day i opened it and they were gone!

So the spreadsheet has different pages to insert different calculations.
we are in a panic since if lost we would have to start completely over
for the month of july.

Please feel free to call as well and speak to michelle or charles

Charles,
Are some of the tabs actually missing or are they _all_ scrunched down
to a very small height?

I randomly had the latter problem some time back. There wasn't enough
of the tab top to click on to select the tab, let alone remember which
tab was the one I wanted, since they were all unreadable.

IIRC, I was able to get the tabs back by reducing the window to a tab
on the desktop and back, or maybe it was to put another window of the
same or larger size over top of the problem window and back again. It
was a long time ago, so I am not sure what I did. But when the
problem window was redrawn, I got the tabs back again.
