[USMA:20250] Re: Congratulations to Jim Elwell on New Metric Today

2002-05-28 Thread Jim Elwell

Bill writes

Obviously, Jim is a sly so-and-so for having kept this a secret during all
the discussion about Metric Today's format.

Congratulations Jim (and Darren) and thank you. And, lest we forget,
continued thanks to Valerie Antoine for the editing job she does, on a
volunteer basis, issue after issue.

I'm not sly, just discreet -- it was not my place to make any announcements
about the ongoing work.

However, for all those who have harped about not using A4 paper before: the
newsletter is printed as two A3 sheets on 19x25 oversize printer sheets,
then trimmed to A3 after printing, then folded to A4.

QSI's marketing assistant spent about 12 hours getting quotes from printers
and paper suppliers, trying to locate an appropriate sheet size, paper
style, paper weight, paper color and compatible printer. She's tenacious
enough that she eventually succeeded, but only after we agreed to buy a six
month's supply of paper up front, which had to be ordered from distribution
center and shipped to Utah.

In other words, saying just use A3/A4 paper is equivalent to saying I
have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to printing. As with so
many things, what looks so simple in the end result often takes far more
work and expertise in the making than a lay person realizes.

Well said! It is the mark of a professional to make the difficult happen
and even more so to make it look easy. Unfortunately, that's what
promotes the proliferation of Monday Morning Quarterbacks and Free

I haven't seen my new MT yet, Jim, but I look forward to receiving it
--- as soon as the pony makes its way down to the Lowcountry here in the
Southeast. My thanks and compliments in advance! You are a generous man.

 John,

My computer is absolutely not set to US formats of time and date. When I got
the computer, the first thing I did was check; it defaulted to Dutch
notations, which are 24 h time and for the date dd-mm-; and then I set
the date format to ISO 8601.

The clock and date down on the right side of the screen are ISO 8601. The
clock says 07:22, not 7:22 when writing this. Putting the mouse pointer over
the clock shows the date in ISO 86021 format. I have also checked the
 headers of my e-mails.

Any wrong settings on my computer must be down in its deepest innards.
Anyway, either your or my computer, or both, has some invisible incorrect
settings which cannot be easily accessed and changed. They may be in DOS
somewhere and then they pop up in e-mail, overriding the Windows settings.
DOS is always there, even though the new Windows is supposed not be based
on it anymore. And DOS was set to am/pm etc., which was not easy to change.
It was even dangerous to try.

I have not imported system settings from my old computer, which, BTW, I had
also set to ISO 8602 as far as I could see.

I wonder who at Loyola University is on our list server.

Also, Han, check you time/date settings. You are still set to US time/date
format, instead of the proper ISO-8601. I'm using Windows Me and never had a
problem using the ISO format. With Windows XP, you should be able to change
 easily to ISO.

You should have the Live Update option enabled, so as to receive all the
updates automatically.

Assuming you registered your product properly, you have a one-year
subscription service.

In the U.S., renewal for each additional year is a mere $9.95.

When you consider the possible cost of recovering from a computer virus,
$9.95 per year is incredibly cheap insurance.

[USMA:20254] Correction of message USMA 20249

2002-05-28 Thread Han Maenen

John and all,

Correction from USMA 20249:

The clock and date down on the right side of the screen are ISO 8601. The
clock says 07:22, not 7:22 when writing this. Putting the mouse pointer over
the clock shows the date in ISO 86021 format. I have also checked the
headers of my e-mails.

should be

The clock and date down on the right side of the screen are ISO 8601. The
clock says 07:22, not 7:22 AM while writing this message. Putting the mouse
pointer over the clock shows the date in ISO 8601 format. I have also
checked the headers of my e-mails.

I wonder, you use Eudora 5.1, I use Outlook Express, attached to IE 6. Might
that be the cause of wrong time-and date settings popping up in e-mail
headers? Might some invisible settings in OE be overriding Windows
preferences?

See if you have "Live Update" as an option. It will connect you to Symantec's web site, determine what new definitions you don't have, and send them. You may have had to register your software first.
