[WSG] [WSG Announce] Some links for light reading (22/12/09)

2009-12-22 Thread Rimantas Liubertas
Will HTML5 make the Web even more invalid?
 http://rebuildingtheweb.com/en/html5-make-web-more-invalid/

Can you provide any reason why you keep posting links to this site?
Yes the blog _seems_ to be about web standards, but the posts
are just speculation of poor quality and based on the lack of information,
misunderstanding and false assumptions.

Sure, the guy has financial interest of keeping xhtml afloat, so he
may see the HTML5 as a threat, but that's not a good enough
reason to spout nonsense.

Rimantas

Rimantas,
How can you be so sure yourself about what you just posted regarding HTML5
vs. XHTML?
Thanks,

Why did I post this link? Because the article has an interesting take

This does mean that I agree or disagree with the article. I hoped that
the article would lead to discussion and debate. I had also hoped that
any discussion or debate would be conducted in a respectful manor

Re: [WSG] :: makeready ::

2009-12-22 Thread Chris Price
I can see you are an artist. It looks like a website that's been designed by
an artist.

Looking at the site in Firefox my first reaction is to want to drag it to
the left. Somehow being right aligned it feels uncomfortable - I wonder why
the white space on the left.

I was also a little puzzled why the title of the home page is 'about'. When
I click the home button I go back to about with home disabled and vice
versa. I can understand why you have done it but it seems a little quirky.

I also seem to be doing a lot of scrolling (the page is long rather than
wide) and it took me a little while to understand what was happening with
the sets.

I hope this is helpful.

I'd appreciate your comments and suggestions on this site.

It's very nice - it's clean, the importance of graphic design/typography
shows in the design, and it exhumes a sense of proficiency. I notice that it
validates as HTML 5 too!

However - there is always a 'BUT' - for my taste it's lopsided! I would
prefer it if the 'content' (by which I mean the area where there is
something to see) was more central in the viewport - all sections except the
'portfolio' are too far to the right. The portfolio has more text on the
left and this balances it up a bit. This lopsided look is particularly
noticeable when one increases the font size 4+ times.

Just my 2p's worth. . .

O.K., now tell me you spent hours making the spacing work that way because
it's what you wanted!

I would prefer if set 1 were expanded by default, and if set 1
through set 3 were presented as tabs on the same line, instead of
vertically, or if they were not present and the 3 sets were displayed
as a horizontal sliding ribbon. In essence, more of a pagination view
instead of disparate vertical blocks.

Re: [WSG] :: makeready ::

2009-12-22 Thread AGerasimchuk
I like the elegancy of the site, but think that Navigation is slightly
confusing. I also wasnt' sure where I am - Home or About? You are
having two links, but it's actually the same page. Also, you put Gustav
Klimt as your first Portfolio item, but I (that was my first impression)
thought that you are claiming that YOU ARE Gustav Klimt (which is a
nonsence). That might mean that you did not emphasize enough WHAT YOUR
SITE ACTUALLY DOES. You are doing website disign/development - make it
stand-out more! It is not clear from your home -page. So, work on
navigation - that is my thought.

 Hi Rimantas

Why did I post this link? Because the article has an interesting take on
 HTML5.

This does mean that I agree or disagree with the article. I hoped that
the article would lead to discussion and debate. I had also hoped that any
discussion or debate would be conducted in a respectful manor (regardless of
how strongly one feels that the other party is incorrect) and that anyone
involved in the discussion would present their arguments rationally and
calmly without sinking to personal attacks on other web standards group
members (yes, the person who wrote the article is a member of this group).

Ahhh... I give up... there is no hope.

 Russ

Can you provide any reason why you keep posting links to this site?
Yes the blog _seems_ to be about web standards, but the posts
are just speculation of poor quality and based on the lack of
 information,
 misunderstanding and false assumptions.

Sure, the guy has financial interest of keeping xhtml afloat, so he
may see the HTML5 as a threat, but that's not a good enough
 reason to spout nonsense.

Where do you see discussion there? Does keep them coming count as one?
I am all for them coming but I'd like some QA applied to them too.

I was discussing the quality of the posts on rebuildingtheweb.com. I
still think that
this groups deserves better than writings of the guy who calls end
tags elements
and thinks that missing end tags for html and body elements in HTML4 is invalid
markup.
Seems Russ and you opted to discuss me instead. Do you think that quote
still applies?

Re: [WSG] [WSG Announce] Some links for light reading (22/12/09)

2009-12-22 Thread Jason Grant
Rimantas:

HTML5 guys keep saying that HTML5 supports XML syntax, hence us XHTML freaks
can use XHTML5 without having to complain about anything. Maybe have a
discussion with our friend Bruce Lawson who will essentially tell you the
same thing.

I think you are being a bit too harsh on our friend Russ for posting some
links. I regularly disagree with a lot of stuff he posts, but I leave a
comment on the relevant blog to express my view, not blaming the messenger
in the process.

The world we live in is pretty strange. If HTML5 kicks in officially at some
point, it will be even stranger. There's no doubt about that in my mind.

Jason

At least give me the option of reading your pages in English if you are
going to argiue a point here on the list in English...otherwise I am forced
to believe predjuice in your 'rant' here that may not be reflected in your
opinions online. Aren't we all 'one in the same' - those who embrace this
communication technology called the internet or are we going to let it
segregate us as history dictates??
