RE: [WSG] VIRUS!!!
Well, that was fun! I foolishly trusted that the email was from the group ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and that I had for some reason been suspended. So I opened the attachment and clicked the file! How foolish of me! If only I had expanded the width of the filename column. It even had a program like icon. I suppose it was kinda intelligent of them to include so many trailing spaces before the file extension so I'm semi impressed as I haven't been caught like that before. It automatically shuts down task manager when you try to open it too so it was real battle to try and end the process in the 1 second you have before it closes. It appears it was sent through the wsg mail server so maybe you guys should check if it is still in the queue somewhere? Assuming this wasn't only sent to me. Oh great, it also adds entries to your host file, shuts down Norton and turns off your firewall. RE: [WSG] IE layout issues
Only a couple of things I noticed in ie6. In the top area where you have Login in, Account Shopping cart etc. The padding is not being applied in IE as it is in FF. Also, the dashed line which makes up the bottom border of the top area (this could be the margin-top of the main content area) is not extending across the whole width of the page. Seems about 100 or so px short. I haven't had time to look at the code but that is what I noticed at first glance. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Darren Wood Sent: Tuesday, 1 February 2005 4:08 PM To: wsg@webstandardsgroup.org Subject: [WSG] IE layout issues Hello list-o-geeks, I've recently designed (and partially built) an online store. RE: [WSG] My Site
Anthony, You have 120 errors on that page. Most of them are br errors missing their end tag. A simple search and replace will get you down to about 20 errors. (maybe less I can't be bothered wading through them all.) Try in your favourite editor: Find: br Replace With: br / Even note pad has SR so you should be able to do this without too much trouble. But please, do it! The fact that you ask for help but have not addressed these issues first is quite annoying. You spend more time defending your umm styles. Meh. Next you'll want to clean up your img tags. You should add a trailing slash to the end of each tag. E.g. img alt= src= / Then you will get the errors down to a manageable number and should be able to work through them yourself. It is important to do this otherwise your wasting your time even bothering. The validator should be your first port of call. As for I think that I have done a nice job with the new stylesheets. I have no doubt the site is a personal achievement and well done to actually having a go. I do think you could benefit from suggestions already made about your site as the comments have be constructive and valid apart from the one flaming you received but the frustration was well meant. o_O. nice is nice. Your style switcher is a good idea but the change of styles should actually reflect a complete style change. The styles themselves require work and suggestions made about contrast and font size are definitely something you should look into. Style2 text is quite hard to read on the right hand side. Something to do with oh...white on one of the lightest grays. The wellstyled colorscheme chooser is fantastic. It can do al the work for you. Would your screen resolution happen to be at 800x600 default? That's ok but you should change your res to 1024x768 and see what your site looks like full screen. Pretty standard res these days. But fix those validator errors here: http://validator.w3.org/check?verbose=1uri=http%3A//www.dotradio.uni.cc/%3F page%3Dhome (Copy and past if the link breaks) Regards, Brett -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Anthony Timberlake Sent: Wednesday, 22 December 2004 12:05 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [WSG] My Site I think that I have done a nice job with the new stylesheets. Have you tried placing the stylesheet link that is not being applied at the top of the list? If the styles contained in it are applied, then it would seem there is some unexpected limitation (or one of the other stylesheets has identifiers with great specificity that are overriding what the last included stylesheet contains). And it may be FF and not IE. I haven't checked the W3C to see if there is a specific intentional limitation to which the browser is adhering. If it doesn't work, then there is something odd about the file itself (possibly missing a closing bracket somewhere that is causing a problem). Just a few ideas to further narrow down the possibilities on the issue at hand. [WSG] link rel not working. @import ok!
Hey everyone, Without showing any code I was wondering if anyone is aware of this problem. Hopefully it is common. Anchors can be used for other uses besides just hyperlinks. a href= /a identifies a link. If you use a { } to style all links, you may accidentally capture other uses of the anchor tag. However, a:link { } will properly style JUST the hyperlink usage of the anchor tag. -Sam ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help ** ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **
[WSG] alt or title...
Hey everyone. I keep forgetting and need some clarification on the use of alt and title and which is most appropriate. I am using the strict dtd so as far as I understand Im meant to use alt for links and title for images. Or is it the other way around? Or both? Fairly simple one. Is this correct? The other way around - the alt attribute goes on the img tag, to provide some information when the image isnt available (eg screen readers, text browsers). The alt attribute is required on img tags, but may be blank if the image is purely decorative. The title attribute goes on the anchor tag, and is optional. It is to provide additional information on the link, over and above what appears in the link text. Taking a stab in the dark, I'd guess that all you did was change the content type meta to it. Well...that's not the way to do it. Your *server* needs to be configured to send out proper application/xhtml+xml, or - if you're using something like PHP server-side - you need to send the appropriate headers. If all you did was indeed just change the meta, your server is happily still sending out your page as text/html, and that's why IE is displaying it.
