Hey Andy, In New Zealand its taking a while for consistent, solid webstandards design development to catch on. Those of us who have caught on, and are applying it to our sites have learnt what we know from the huge crew of hard out bloggers and self-publishersyou know who you are ;) I think the largest problem with webdesign in New Zealand (and probably everywhere else...) is Dreamweaver...it seems to have started a breed of really lazy and careless webdesigners. Coupled with fireworks' slice tool the web has been slaughtered. (I do realise that Macromedia has released MX2004 which is a leap in the right direction - containing many tabless design templates, etc. that aims to iron out some of the shocking HTML its produced in the past...) If people took the time to learn the basics, like putting in doctypes and writing semantic HTML, the web would be a far less dissapointing place for us Kiwi's (and the world, i guess). Have a look at some of the sites coming out of NZ at the momentthe TVNZ Site[1] is a nice example... There is however a strong movement towards webstandards. The NZ government has released a pretty sound set of Web Standards[2] which is slowly making people think more about their webdesign. In Auckland I haven't been able to find very many web companies who adhere to webstandards. I have done my best to make webstandards a part of our development methodologies, and its finally working. Every new site we spew out is complient. chuffed /. Wellington seems to be where all the good webstandard based stuff is coming from (http://signify.co.nz/accessibility/index.php) So any other kiwi standards based webdevelopers lurking in Auckland...make yourselves known! :) Cheers D ** The discussion list for http://webstandardsgroup.org/ Proud presenters of Web Essentials 04 http://we04.com/ Web standards, accessibility, inspiration, knowledge To be held in Sydney, September 30 and October 1, 2004 See http://webstandardsgroup.org/mail/guidelines.cfm for some hints on posting to the list getting help **

I'm also based in Auckland implementing web-based applications and doing my best to spread the web standards message. Good to see there are others out there. I'm afraid, though, I have to take issue with putting forth the TVNZ site. I'm afraid it has to rate as one of the most disappointing site re-launches for a good while. Apart from being well wide of the web standards mark it takes an age to load on anything but a broadband connection. I know they changed the back-end to Cocoon, but I was hoping they'd grasp the web standards nettle and revamp the markup as well. The people who are building these sites are not the same people who are practising webstandards.
