 Unfortunately I've reverted to 15.10, turns out 16.04 was unstable in
other ways.  Apache locked up, same Apache I had compiled from source and
ran fine on 15.10, but locked up on 16.04, so I reverted to 15.10.

In a previous message of this thread, Mike#1 suggested waiting 6 months
for the Ubuntu side of things to settle.
Of course, if you can't wait that long and your definition of "soon" is
way shorter than 6 months, there's always the option of contracting one
of the developers ... as you've previously done, IIRC.

 I really wanted PHP 7 because it really did improve speed, but just
installed PHP 7 onto 15.10 to get it now.  All is good.

Do you have /etc/X11/Xsession.d/65snappy file? It defines an environment
variable which I don't remember any more and caused quite a similar
symptoms for me. I uninstalled snapd package and was happy.

 Even LXDE doesn't work right, comes up in 600x800 resolution and even
if I set to 1680x1050 it won't change, even after logout and back in.
