It looks like you're using an i845 chipset on XFree86 4.2.0.

Most likely, the version of XFree86 you're running (4.1.0) doesn't

Or try a newer version of your distribution which should have that

According to http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2003/01/msg04732.html,
support for the i845 chipset was not available until near XFree86
4.3.0. It is very likely that Redhat 8.0 simply doesn't support your
video card.

In any case, Redhat 8.0 is very old and you should consider at least
trying Redhat 9.0 or one of the latest Fedora Core releases. Fedora
would be your best bet as it is free and updates are available
(updates are no longer available for Redhat 8.0).

Also, to get to the GUI from the console should only require Alt-F7.
It's going to the console from the GUI that requires CTRL-ALT-F#. It
is likely that Redhat uses standard VESA modes when installing, so
that is why the GUI worked then. You could try editing the Driver line
of the XF86Config file to say Drivervesa instead of Driver
i810, but you would not get any acceleration.

Hope this helps.

It looks like XFree86 is configured to use the fbdev driver. To do

If you didn't really want to use the framebuffer driver, you can have
XFree86 try to automatically generate a working configuration file.

Looking at the below output shows that it was released on 18 January
2002. More than likely, you have a graphics card from after this date
and so you'll want something newer like 4.4.0 or 4.5.0 (or maybe even
the new Xorg distribution). Trying to use a version of Xfree86 that
was released prior to the release of your graphics card makes it
highly unlikely that you will receive satisfactory results. Please
consider using a newer version.

 Fatal server error:

Please forward 'scanpci -v' output to XFree86 support

I'm pretty sure that this means that XFree86 has detected your card,
but does not have enough information about it. So, you'll need to run
scanpci -v from a root prompt (it ends in a pound sign like this
- # ) and send along the results. Then the appropriate information
can be added to the distribution so that XFree86 will know about your
card.

However, since this version is so old, it's possible that said
information has already been added to the distribution, and so using a
newer version would provide better results. (Hint: Try a newer
version! ;-) )

Hope this helps.

2001 (not supported) I decided to install a new version of X.
So now the question is wether it is possible to start X (necessary to run
the tests) making the smallest changes possible.
Maybe another version of X will work?

I was going to suggest trying to get a copy of the kernel source of
the kernel that you're running and build a agpgart.o module, but it
looks like you're running 2.2.17, which is pretty ancient.

It may work, though if you get a copy of the kernel source for 2.2.17
and configure it to build agpgart support and then build it but only
copy out the agpgart.o module.

One problem /might/ be that it looks like your build kernel (2.4.x) is
pretty significantly different from your running kernel (2.2.x). It
might be that XFree86 configured itself for features present on a 2.4
kernel and is now confused by the difference of the 2.2 kernel. Maybe
if you rebuild on 2.2.17? And install a agpgart.o module?

This sounds like a crazy project, but I understand that it's sometimes
necessary and I hope it works out well for you.

You've probably just changed them to a setting which your video card
and/or monitor cannot handle. As far as I know you must now delve into
the XFree86 configuration file. It's usually found in
/etc/X11/XF86Config. You'll want to look at two sections.

One section is called Monitor and it should look something like this:

Section Monitor
Identifier Monitor0
VendorName Monitor Vendor
ModelNameMonitor Model
HorizSync31.5 - 57.0
VertRefresh 50.0 - 70.0
Option DPMS
EndSection

Most of the stuff inbetween Section and EndSection might be different.
That's fine. What you could try first is to change or add a
VertRefresh option to look like this:

VertRefresh 60

Almost all monitors will support 60Hz. It won't look best, but it
should at least work.

Try to load your desktop.

If that did not work, then look at the Screen section. It will look
something like this:

Section Screen
Identifier Screen0
Device Card0
MonitorMonitor0
DefaultDepth16
SubSection Display
Depth 1
# Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 4
# Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 8
# Modes 1024x768
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 15
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 16
Modes 1024x768 800x600 640x480 320x240 160x120
EndSubSection
SubSection Display
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Again, it will look different which is fine. What you should look for
or add is a 16-bit display section with a definitely-will-work
resolution like 800x600 like this:

SubSection Display
 Depth 16
 Modes 800x600
EndSubSection

If this does not work, I suppose you could even look for the Driver
line in the Device section and change it to vesa and see if that
works.

If none of this works, then hopefully someone else can help.

Good luck!

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0

I think what is happening is you configured XFree86 to use an Intel
driver when you needed to configure it to use the radeon driver. If
you edit the Driver line under the Device section of your
/etc/X11/XF86Config and make it look something like:

 Section Device

you may have more luck.

Another option is to run '/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 -configure' as root

working configuration for you.

Good luck!

Re: [XFree86] could not open default font 'fixed'

could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from the list!
could not open default font 'fixed'
This problem comes up WAY too often ( I know I've had it several times ).

When this problem came up on a RedHat system, I found that starting xfs worked:

# /etc/init.d/xfs start

I had stopped it by removing it from the list of services/daemons to
start on boot by running ntsysv and unmarking some items, xfs among
them.

Try this and see if it solves your problem.

Try as root running:

# X -configure

and follow the instructions that follow. If that looks okay, put the
config file created into /etc/X11/XF86Config

Both the Rage XL and Rage 128 probably use the ati driver.

Hope this helps.

I can't test this right now, but two options from X --help look interesting:

vtXX

and

-keeptty

Maybe these will do what you want?

Re: [XFree86] Can not start x windows after upgraded kernel to version 2.6.x

2004-07-16 Thread Andrew Haninger
Well, I'm quite confused about what's your problem, especially after
your last email to Recall your message. I think you're saying you
didn't mean to send it and you want to undo the action of sending the
email. I sure hope that is not what you mean, though.

In the off chance that you still need help, though, it looks like
XFree86 cannot find a device /dev/mouse. Maybe your new kernel makes a
different device name for the mouse. You might try one of the
text-based, keyboard-only X configuration tools like xf86cfg or
xf86config. Then try to reassociate your mouse with X.

Hope this helps.

Re: [XFree86] X problem...please help

2004-07-16 Thread Andrew Haninger
You'll need to install font packages for your distribution or
reinstall of the packages you've already installed.

If you installed from source, you might try grabbing all of the
.tar.gz files from the XFree86 ftp site again and compiling all of
them and not just the first three or so. This solved that problem for
me when I had it last.

Good luck!

Re: [XFree86] X problem...please help

2004-07-16 Thread Andrew Haninger
Oddly enough, I just had the same problem on a RHEL machine.

It happened after I ran ntsysv and turned off a bunch of services,
including xfs.

Try starting xfs and see if that fixes your problem.
If you're running Redhat or some derivative, see if you can run ntsysv
and scroll down to the bottom and turn on xfs. You can also run
/etc/init.d/xfs start to get it to run immediately, but this will not
save the setting.

Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
 and start again.
There is your hint. If you are switching to a new virtual terminal
(ctrl-alt-f1, for example) after logging in at a graphical screen,
then you'll need to tell X to start on a different display, like so:

startx -- :1

or

startx -- :2

if you want to start a THIRD X session.

I suppose you could also be trying to log in from an xterm, which
won't work at all.

However, if you're trying to start a new X session over ssh, then the
above should work.

By this, I mean you could be typing startx from an xterm running on

While Marlena's suggestion will work as well, you may have an easier
time finding the version if you do:

startx -- -version

X -version

It sounds like X is starting.

Are you starting it with 'startx' or is it just starting when you boot?

What happens if you ctrl-alt-bkspc when you switch to the hourglass screen?

Re: [XFree86] Blank LCD display

2004-07-08 Thread Andrew Haninger
Just a shot in the dark, but maybe try changing:

 SubSection Display
   Depth 16
   Modes 640x480-85 640x480-75 640x480-72 640x480-60
 EndSubsection

to

SubSection Display
   Depth 16
   Modes 640x480-60
EndSubsection

In the first one, it looks like you're trying to drive the LCD at
85Hz, which may just not work. 60Hz is more likely to produce a
viewable image.

Maybe the LCD panel seems to go to sleep or says Out Of Range? This
would probably be because of trying to overdrive it.

It could also be that the VertRefresh option overrides the -85 you
have in the Mode line, in which case my suggestion is moot.

when i restart the server , only see the character prompt
(before the graphic gnome coming up very weell). I try to
startx and xinit , but the only i can see is the
message below into the log file.
Well, you didn't say what OS you are using; and if it's Linux or BSD,
which distribution.

In either case, you need to install XFree86 fonts. This will likely be
a package made for your distribution.

If you installed from source, I would recommend getting every .tgz
file available from an XFree mirror and installing all of them, not
just the first 3 or 4.

When you say gnome coming up very well, it sounds like you mean that
GNOME is starting just fine, but you're getting this temporary error
message.

Hope this helps.

Re: [XFree86] Newbie with graphics problem under VirtualPC2004

2004-06-19 Thread Andrew Haninger
is there a way to stop X running and edit the VGA card, without having to
re-install from scratch -and learn something in the process :-) ?

Generally, X can be stopped by pressing [CTRL]-[ALT]-[BACKSPACE] and
you may be dumped to a terminal. I don't know if this is what would
happen on VirtualPC, though.

If you can get to the XFree86Config file, you can change the Driver
line to vesa and your X server should use a VESA driver.

Re: [XFree86] Newbie with graphics problem under VirtualPC2004

2004-06-19 Thread Andrew Haninger
If VPC installs a virtual network device, maybe you can telnet or ssh
to the Linux installation from Windows (on the same machine)?

Other than that, you'll need to find a way to get into it via a text
mode, which is kinda outside the scope of this list. I would suggest
[CTRL]-[ALT]-[F1]/[F2]/[F3]/[F4]/[F5]/[F6], but maybe that's a
Linux-only method.

However, setting the driver to vesa should be all that is required
to get a working XFree86 setup. Getting into your VPC in text mode is
up to you :-/. In the end, it may be easier and faster to reinstall.
