I still can't send log file or my Config file, but I have tried a number of things and I can't use a depth of greater than 15 bits Radeon 7500LE XFree86 4.3.0 If I try to set a depth greater than 15, when I run startx, it crashes and all soutput to my monitor stops. It appears that the log file does not get written to in this case. The crash must occur before the first file I/O to the log file. I have to reset my machine. Any ideas, anyone else experienced this? Is 4.4.0 supposed to have better support for the radeon? thanks don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Resolution problem on Gateway M305X laptop
Greetings, I am having difficulty getting my m305x gateway laptop to run at the advertised 1024x768 18bit color depth. The best resolution that I have been able to get is 800x600. It seemed to work under WinXP, but that is gone now :) The system is running Fedora Core 1, the chipset is Intel 852GM and X seems to be using the i810 driver. The Gateway specs on this machine say regarding the display: 15.0 XGA TFT Active Matrix Color Display 1024x768 @ 18 bit (262K) Colors. I don't have the laptop with me at work today and I did not bring a copy of XF86Config, but I do have a 'Display' subsection in the 'Screen' section that sets the depth to 16 and the resolution to 1024x768. I can provide XF86Config tomorrow if needed. My XFree86.0.log is attached. There you can see that I don't seem to have the BIOS related stolen memory problem (where the bios only allocates 1M video ram instead of 8M). Re: [XFree86] Unable to set vertical refresh rate correctly
I still havn't found any way to set my fresh rate to 100hz. I've been searching for documentation on the subject for a while now, and thus far nothing has helped. The only configuration document that I have found (besides random ramblings on google) is the Debian XF86Config-4 man page. It's helpful for various things, but not for my specific problem. Also, there doesn't appear to be any official config file documentation for 4.2.1. Again, my vid card is a geforce2mx, nvidia driver, on an Elements 9D monitor. Does anyone know how to force X to set a certain fresh rate? There are several ways to force a vertical refresh rate. First, if you are only running one resolution, specify: VertRefresh 95-100 In your monitor section in your config file to specify a vertical refresh of between 95 and 100HZ. This should be sufficient by itself. You can also specify modelines with the correct pixel clock. You would need to google for one of the mode line generators and use it to generate a modeline for your monitor with the correct horizontal, vertical and pixel clocks. Frankly, setting a refresh rate of 100 is useless. I have extremely sensitive eyes and I can not notice a refresh above 82Hz or so. Second, a high refresh rate reduces the clarity of the image on your screen. Problems such as ghosting appear. Poor quality cables, long cables, high resolution or a low quality monitor make the problem worse. Your refresh rate should be a few Hz higher than the highest refresh rate at which you stop noticing flicker. If you can still see a flicker at 75Hz then run your monitor at 80 or 85. My ViewSonic P815 was capable of 120Hz at 1600x1200 (I believe. Been a long time since I used a CRT). I never ran it above 85Hz because it simply wasn't necessary. If you want a 100% rock solid image, then get an LCD. -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

As to why mozilla is launching 5 copies of itself, that doesn't make much sense. How are you launching mozilla? Via .xsession? If so, what does this look like? If the Blade 3D is not so good, then what is a good low-end choice for a replacement? I can't comment on the Blade 3D, however, I have a GeForce 2 in my machine, and it works excellently. Re: [XFree86] Volunteering
I get the feeling that the management would rather spend the time receiving and integrating submitted documentation than registering people who are interested in doing something. Still, it would be nice to know that if one creates documentation, that it might actually get put somewhere :) There are definitely a few things I would like to change, but if noone on the development team is interested, then there isn't much point. Remember: as a volounteer they can't easily say Don do this, Andrew do that, so there is little point in keeping a list of who might do something. Actually, I would be all for this. The people involved in the project probably have a much better idea what needs to be documented than I do. -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
[XFree86] Matrox G550 + DVI + HAL + DPMS + ViewSonic LCD + FreeBSD
I have a Matrox G550 + 2 Matrox G450 PCI cards all with DVI output. All three are connected to Viewsonic LCD's via DVI. I am running 4.2.1 on FreeBSD 5.0 compiled from source with the Matrox HAL libraries. Any time I try to send the monitors into sleep or poweroff, they just end up displaying a series of colored vertical bands that vary depending on what my desktop looks like. I have Options DPMS in my config file. I know Andrew said that DPMS was working with his G550 and was wondering where the difference likely is. Does it work better with 4.2.99.x? I have been using the book FreeBSD unleashed buy Michael Urban My problem is after install, I login as root, and type startx and I get the following errors. (I have installed the software at least 8 times with different options) You need to actually configure XFree86 so that it knows what graphics card, keyboard, mouse and monitor you have. Try running xf86cfg Also, unless there is some overwhelming reason to run a GUI, you may want to consider running this box from the command line. Re: [XFree86] DPMS not working with DVI
No alternative. DPMS works on DVI on my Matrox G550. BY default DPMS is not enabled, to turn it on I put Option DPMS in the monitor section of the config file, but it can also go in some other sections (flags ?). If it still isn't working, your driver has a bug or a misfeature. DPMS does not work for me with my DVI outputs either. I have finally gotten my G450 PCI and G550 AGP cards all plaing nicely with my monitors using DVI. Any time they get kicked into powersave the screens simply display what looks a lot like a snowcrash :) Moving the mouse or pressing a key immediately retores the display. This is with FreeBSD 5.0-RELEASE with XFree86 4.2.1 compiled from source via the ports tree and with the Matrox drivers compiled from source. -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] control-alt-backspace is not available to applications
This is not an XFree86 bug. Ctl-Alt-BackSpace has killed the server as far back as I can remember. Certainly before 2.0, and likely before emacs. Fix emacs. Are you sure? http://www.multicians.org/mepap.html#seciii http://www.linux-mag.com/2001-12/xfree86_01.html If you are trying to point out that emacs is older than XFree you are obviously right. Marc's comment, however, was the Ctl-Alt-BackSpace was used in XFree before it was used in Emacs. Whether or not this is true I do not know. What surprises me is that if the server isn't using Ctl-Alt-BackSpace (via DontZap) then is there some reason it should not pass that on to the application? (emacs in this case). -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: Multihead failure with 3 ATI Radeon 7000 (VE QY)
I have a similar setup and have been unable to get even this far. I'm using XFree86 4.2.99.4 on Linux 2.5.59 with a PCI Radeon 7000 and an AGP Radeon VE, each with a DFP on the DVI port. There seem to be three separate problems that I'm seeing. I've included a description of each one and log file excerpts below. With 4.2.99.4 I could not even start the X server. The same goes for 4.2.99.3. With either of those servers, the moment I launch the server it segfaults and then aborts. This only happens with the Radeon cards I have. If I launch xf86cfg, the monitor simply displays Out Of Range I have tried to insert modelines and to make this work by hand, but so far I have had almost no luck. One time the monitor did manage to display a jumping image and when I checked the screen information, it was claiming a 1600x1200 input on an LCD only capable of 1280x1024. I have tried forcing DigitalScreen and other options. Am I missing something? I find that using it gives better results with the DVI output on my G550. There is a version of this file on the CD that came with my G550, at Linux/drivers/xfree86/4.1.0/drivers/mga_hal_drv.o but I use a version intended for XFree86 version 4.2.0 that came with the Matrox Linux drivers on their web site. You may find that the CD with a newer card has the 4.2.0 version on it. XFree86 built from our sources will use the binary mga_hal_drv.o, but I've found that the version shipped with Red Hat 8.0 does not use this module even if it is available. I saw this on a few sites but everything referenced 4.2.0. It was obviously foolish to think it had been fixed in the newer revisions. Is there some reason that the XFree86 page does not mention that DVI output is not supported on the G450 and G550 cards? -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86
Re: [XFree86] Indication of wether an email here was sent vianon-subscriber
*If* the list managers do this, please give us advanced notice, including the header that they intend to add; preferably having an overlap period with both headers. No need to. The header is there already. All GNU mailman lists have an X-BeenThere: [EMAIL PROTECTED] header, as well as the ListId header. Both are equally good for filtering. I've never had any false positives or negatives using either header to filter on. Just make sure you're using one or the other, and your sorting should work always wether or not the [mess] is in the subject or not. The disadvantadge to removing [XFree86] from the subject is that those people who do not use procmail to sort their mail will have to read the message to know where it came from. I prefer to read my messages in one inbox and use the subject line to figure out whether to read a particular message now or later. That said, most of the lists I am on lack a subject listname and it would not make a big difference to me one way or another. -Don ___ XFree86 mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xfree86

[XFree86] Multihead failure with 3 ATI Radeon 7000 (VE)
I have been beating my head against this problem for 3 days now and felt it was time to head to the experts. I have a system with 1 AGP Radeon 7000 and 2 PCI ATI Radeon 7000's. These cards are (I believe) from Saphire and powered by ATI. They have a VGA output, a DVI output and an S-video output. I can display on each monitor individually. They will not work at the same time however. I have tried a number of variations on this configuration file. I have tried disabling every option I can think of and nothing has helped. The specific error is: (EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section. As far as I can tell, however, there is a perfectly valid config section for Screen 1. If I alter the ServerLayout section to only reflect one screen, and I specify only one card and test it, that card/monitor will work fine. I have tested all three in this way and each one works. I have tried disabling DRI, disabling DGA, etc. and nothing has helped. I have searched on Google for similar problems but I have failed to find one that matches mine. This is probably because I lack search technique. This is version 4.2.1, 3 September 2002 running on FreeBSD 5.0-RC3 Attached is my XF86Config file and the log file. [Newbie]Problem with Laptop and XFree86
Hi to everybody, I installed XFree86 (Vers. 4.2.0) together with Suse Linux 7.2 on my Laptop which is a Movita Fuego 215. I cannot get the xserver to run correctly e.g. I cannot see anything on my display. My laptop is equipped with a Silicon-motion Lynx3D graphic adapter (SM820) on a 14 TFT display. I generated the config-file with XFree86 -configure and had a look at the resulting file. For my understanding the config-file is ok. I copied the new configuration-file from my home-directory to /etc/X11, under the name XF86Config. When I start the X-Server with XFree86 -xf86config /etc/X11/XF86Config , I end up (sometimes) with a total black screen ; in the background something is still working (indicated by disk-access) but the key's CNTRL-ALT-BS or CNTRL-ALT-+ or CNTRL-ALT-- do not work. I have to switch-off the Laptop ! Switching from internal- to external monitor, an back again to internal (via hotkey), as advised in some FAQ's, does not solve the problem. s Also switching to a console with CNTRL-ALT-F2 and back to graphic with ALT-F7 does not work. Sometimes I get a gray-background (like a checkerboard) and a BIG block-mouse-cursor (aprox. 1 X 1 cm !). When I move the mouse something happens, but after a few moves the display changes to total black an I have to switch off the laptop. The same behavior happens, when I use an external standard CRT monitor. I played around with some Silicon-Motion Option-switches like : Option NoAccel True and Option UseBIOS True , but with no progress. I attached the XF86Config- and XFree86.log files to the e-mail. Who can help me please !!?? bets regards Don Schultz XFree86.log Description: Binary data XF86Config Description: Binary data

I will be glad to pay someone for the knowledge I need. I recently bought a new computer to take the Linux plunge and install Red Hat. [Xpert]Re: dual head Radeon VE QY (7000) support
Another (happier) update on the Radeon dual head stuff. After fighting with this on Friday and sending you email I ran away for the weekend. On Saturday a squirrel chose to end it's life in our building's power transformer, taking out the AC power for a few hours. On Monday I came it to find all my machines rebooted ( so much for setting any up-time records :) ), and both heads on the Radeon 7000 up and working. I'm guessing that the hardware needed to be fully powered down to undo the previous single head configuration settings. I've had other problems with dual head software on the alpha platform caused by incomplete initialization of the second head. Anyway, it's now running just fine. If you like I can send you my XF86Config-4, but there's nothing special in it. /var/log/XFree86.0.log has all the appropriate info for two heads. For those that tuned in late, here's the original configuration description... Did you ever get your dual head Radeon to activate the second head? I have more or less the same symptoms (first head works fine, the mouse will move off the screen to what should be the second head, but the second monitor never comes to life). I'm running a Redhat 2.4.9-31 kernel with Redhat 7.1 and updated rpms to add Xfree 4.2. My symptoms are slightly different in that my XFree86.0.log does not show any references to RADEON(1), only to RADEON(0). I would guess I have something messed up in my XF86Config-4, but it does let me move the mouse off-screen, so at least part of the system thinks there are two heads. lspci gives: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5159 -- +--+--+ | Don Russell | email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Philips Medical Systems | Voice: (440)-483-5726 | | 595 Miner Road | Fax: (440) 483-5728 | | Cleveland, Ohio, USA 44143 | | +--+--+ ___ Xpert mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://XFree86.Org/mailman/listinfo/xpert

[Xpert]int10 not softbooting second Voodoo 3 3000 PCI
I picked up a second Voodoo3 card today (ontop of my other PCI one and an AGP Matrox G400 DH), and was about ready to set it up to work in XFree86-4.1.0 (havent installed 4.2 yet, will test it there as well in a while). Unfortunatly, it seems that int10 was unable to softboot the second voodoo3 (at PCI:0:19:0). It would boot the first just fine (at PCI:0:18:0), even when the first wasn't setup by the bios (my original setting). The second would load perfectly when it was the only PCI video card (both setup/not setup by the bios). XFree86 would still continue to load and allocate memory and screen realestate to the non-booted video card (and I presume draw to it as well, but I'm not quite certain of that.) even though the card wasn't booted, and no signal was being shoved out of it. I suspect that this is just a bug in the int10 module that hasn't been discovered yet because few people are working with 4 heads... but I could be mistaken. (Like the boot signal is being sent to the wrong card as it tries to boot the second card... although it does correctly report a boot failure...) What should I do now?
