Re: [XFree86] Red Hat Linux installation error

2003-03-19 Thread Trever Furnish
The XF86Config file that got generated was probably for version 3 of X
and you're running version 4 from startx...or something like that. I'm
not clear on how rh7.3 chooses between them. Redhat puts the X config
at the end of the setup though, so the rest of your install is probably
ok - you just need to configure X properly after the install.

Problem though - the 845G card doesn't seem to work well until the
December 9th, 2002 version of X 4.2. Until then, it had periodic
lock-ups when running dri (at least for me).

If you don't want dri (3d accel), then you may be able to get by with
just installing the 82845G driver from Intel (available from their
website). You'll need to have the kernel-source package installed (or
is it kernel-headers? i forget) and need to update the kernel beyond
the stock rh7.3 kernel. They have packages for 2.4.9-31 available from
their updates.redhat.com ftp site. And you'll still need to make a
valid config file. Try running X -configure - if that doesn't work, I
can send you a config that works for me, but my monitor and screens will
be different.

[XFree86] sample radeon7500 dual-head config?

2003-03-17 Thread Trever Furnish
I've stared at the radeon manual page from 4.2.99.902 for quite a while
now and tried a few things, but I don't think I'm getting the config
quite right to tell X that I want to use both ports of my dvi/vga
radeon7500 in xinerama mode. Anyone have a working config file you
could share?

I'm not sure where to start. Cloning, which the radeon man page
mentions, doesn't sound like what I want - I don't want identical output
on two displays, but rather two displays treated as separate screens
and combined using Xinerama.

How are the screen and device sections supposed to be set up? Do I need
two separate device sections? Two separate screen sections? If I need
two device sections, how are they to differ? (I already tried just
repeating the device section with different ID's, but it warns me that
the busid is repeated and only uses one monitor.)

Help?

Re: [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 and Intel845g, RedHat 8.0

2003-03-13 Thread Trever Furnish
As Cynthia said, the X install worked - it overwrites the xinitrc that
redhat supplies. That file is the one that starts Gnome or KDE.
Instead, you're now getting twm, an old window manager.

Personally I'm working on a redhat 7.3 system, so my re-integrated
script may not work for you on 8.0 (in fact it may crash your system,
wreck your car, and sleep with your wife, for all I know - NO
GUARANTEES!!!), but I've attached it.

I'm not very experienced with X configuration - this script may be bad.
Comments are welcome (especially since my workstation can use all the
help it can get :-) ). All I did was try to merge the script that
redhat provides with the script that X provides, giving precendence to
redhat settings, with the goal of being able to type startx and get back
to kde/gnome. Works for me. YMMV. HTH. :-)

Back up your current /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file and drop the attached
file into its place. Then do one of the following:

echo KDE /etc/sysconfig/desktop
or
echo GNOME /etc/sysconfig/desktop
...depending on which desktop you want to run.

Your dri question is a separate problem - you seem to need an updated
drm kernel module. It's only preventing you from using dri 3d
acceleration though, not causing gnome/kde to disappear.

Hi,
I have problem with redhat8.0 installation. If I try to
install it with
the text mode (graphic mode does not work, becouse of the
not supported
I845G chip card), and use vesa generic as graphic card I'm able to
start the Xwindow but with a very poor resolution. And only
if I log as
root (what I would not do until no other works), even if I created a
further account and it exists.
I downloaded the XFree86 4.3.0 and followed the instruction.
I answer yes to all the questions (as suggested).
And then something strange happens: if I type startx I do not get a
blank screen (at least :o)), but a gray screen, three
terminal windows,
one clock and nothing else! It seems that the kde (or gnome) is not
there any more...
I really hope that someone can help me.

Re: [XFree86] Out of Luck (tm) with ATI dual monitor ??

2003-03-12 Thread Trever Furnish
Well, my replying to you definitely qualifies as the blind leading the
blind, but perhaps you should use the radeon driver for your radeon7500
as well. I'm currently typing this message on an X display powered by a
radeon7500 (64MB, PCI) using the radeon driver on X4.2.99.902 (aka 4.3.0
rc2).

In other words, in your device section, change this line:

	Driver ati

To this:

	Driver radeon

Please do let me know if it works - I'm especially interested because
I'm having a problem getting dual-head going as well, but my symptoms
are quite different.

Also, I'm curious - why not just use the dvi output of the radeon7500
(assuming yours has one)? Mine came with a dvi out and a vga out, but I
had to order the adaptor from ATI to convert the dvi to vga
($5+shipping). I'm still waiting on it, so I can't vouch for how well
it works, but I'm hoping to get triple-head working by using the two
outputs of the radeon and the one output of the onboard graphics chipset
(i810).

Sorry to re-repost this but I never got any hints there.
Could someone just tell me if this is just impossible ?

What I would like to understand is what is going on :
why 2 separately perfectly configured cards would not want
to work together in multiple monitor layout.

Otherwise, could someone tell me what type of card should I use
to make sure I can use dual monitor with Xfree 4.3 .

Thanks !

I am forwarding this post I made on the xfree86 list for redhat as
suggested by its members ...
I tried all I could think of ..

- used the CVS head of the Xfree86 as of a couple weeks ago
- tried the GATOS driver + DRM kernel module
It's still failing pretty much the same : the second screen (screen 1) gets
deleted
when I try to use 2 screens. Each of them works perfectly independantly,
which I can check by just removing/adding them alternatively to the Layout.
Is dual monitor supported for ATI ?

Thanks

Subject: could use some help with dual monitor ...
I am running RH 8.0, Xfree 4.2.0 from distro and 2 ATI cards :

- ATI radeon 8500 DV AGP
- ATI Radeon 7500 PCI
Both cards are recognized and work fine independantly.
I setup my XFree986Config to use both at the same time by defining the
following layout (actual files are included below).
Section ServerLayout
Identifier Multi Configured
Screen 0Screen0
Screen 1Screen1 RightOf Screen0
InputDeviceMouse0 CorePointer
InputDeviceKeyboard0 CoreKeyboard
EndSection
I checked that each card is working by commenting out the Screen 1 line
and switching the Screen 0 line between Screen0 and Screen1.
Everytime I add the Screen 1 line, I get the following error in
XFree86.0.log
(details below)
(II) Loading sub module radeon
(II) LoadModule: radeon
(II) Reloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/radeon_drv.o
(EE) Screen 1 deleted because of no matching config section.
(II) UnloadModule: ati
(II) UnloadModule: radeon
and, sure enough, only 1 monitor is running :-(

Any idea about what I am doing wrong here ???

Thanks !

[XFree86] Please teach me... radeon + i810 = shmat error?

2003-03-12 Thread Trever Furnish
I'm going to summarize first with quick questions since these may be
easy for someone:

1. Is it possible / normal for an agp card to show up in the output of
lspci?
2. Anyone have any idea why I can run either my embedded i845G or my pci
radeon7500 alone just by switching my ServerLayout section (X -layout
{i810 | radeon | both}, but not both at the same time?

I've attached a bunch of stuff - the output of lspci -v, my XF86Config,
and the log files created when I try to run just the i810 (works), just
the radeon (works), and both (doesn't work).

The error I get when I run both at once is:

(II) Loading sub module int10
(II) LoadModule: int10
(II) Reloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libint10.a
(II) RADEON(1): initializing int10
(EE) RADEON(1): Cannot shmat() high memory
...followed by a sig11 and X crash.

Any idea what I'm doing wrong? ...or where to start looking? I'm
planning to move to 4.3.0 (currently on rc2) in a few moments, just as
soon as I muster the courage. :-(

Help?

Re: [XFree86] Blurry Monitor

2003-03-10 Thread Trever Furnish
I wish I could help - maybe then I could help myself. I have a system
with similar symptoms. I've even explicitely set the hsync and vsync -
ie I put in only one value for each, not a range - and it doesn't seem
to help. On the other hand, xvidtune claims it's not actually running
at exactly the freqs I entered still, so I guess it could still be a
sync rate problem.

The same monitor works great when being driven by windows. In my case
I'm using different systems for linux and windows, so it could be a
video card thing, but the card worked fine before I switched the system
to linux.

The effect I have is one where there's almost a shadow image overlaid on
the real image - you can't really see it unless you look at an edge
where the intensity of the picture changes - for example, the transition
from a light desktop background to a dark xterm window. About 3
millimeters from the edge, you see a phantom edge where everything is a
little lighter. It's sort of like someone took a screenshot in the
gimp, duplicated the original layer, then moved the new layer a few
pixels to the right overlaid it on the using one of the methods that
only affects signal intensity.

FWIW, I've had the same problem several times in the past and have
always wanted to discover the fix, but so far no luck...

tried 800 x 600 (eeek), but it was blurry there as well.
Here's my config:
RedHat 8.0 (haven't upgraded anything until I figure this out so it's
all distro defaults)
GeForce 2 MX 400 (Also tried a PCI ATI Xpert 128 with same result)
Shamrock C903P5 19 monitor.
it HAS to be something in the monitor settings. I tried this before with
RedHat 7.2 and 7.3 on a machine with an Intel 810 (I think), but ended

Any ideas or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming by blurry you aren't saying that the fonts are anti-
aliased. Some people consider that a feature.
It really just sounds like a bad monitor or cable. Are you
sure the refresh rate isn't too high? At the same resolution
higher refresh rates will look fuzzier.

The monitor says it can do 130, but that doesn't mean it looks
any good at 130. XFree86 has modelines going up to about 100 if
I recall correctly so that's probably what you're getting now.
Set the VertRefresh to max out at 75 or so.

Ok, but how do you force a specific, exact refresh rate? My monitor's
manual lists the exact dot-clock and frequency for each resolution, but
even if I specify only one value for hsync and vsync in XF86Config, the
values xvidtune reports are at least a little off (ie 76.8 instead of 75).
