Re: [XFree86] Red Hat Linux installation error
The XF86Config file that got generated was probably for version 3 of X and you're running version 4 from startx...or something like that. I'm not clear on how rh7.3 chooses between them. Redhat puts the X config at the end of the setup though, so the rest of your install is probably ok - you just need to configure X properly after the install. Problem though - the 845G card doesn't seem to work well until the December 9th, 2002 version of X 4.2. Until then, it had periodic lock-ups when running dri (at least for me). If you don't want dri (3d accel), then you may be able to get by with just installing the 82845G driver from Intel (available from their website). You'll need to have the kernel-source package installed (or is it kernel-headers? i forget) and need to update the kernel beyond the stock rh7.3 kernel. They have packages for 2.4.9-31 available from their updates.redhat.com ftp site. And you'll still need to make a valid config file. Try running X -configure - if that doesn't work, I can send you a config that works for me, but my monitor and screens will be different. -- Trever Hamelinck, Karen wrote: Ladies/Gentlemen: I am trying to load Red Hat Linux 7.3 Pro on an IBM 831027U with an Intel 82845G Video Card and an IBM E74 Monitor. [XFree86] sample radeon7500 dual-head config?
I've stared at the radeon manual page from 4.2.99.902 for quite a while now and tried a few things, but I don't think I'm getting the config quite right to tell X that I want to use both ports of my dvi/vga radeon7500 in xinerama mode. Anyone have a working config file you could share? I'm not sure where to start. Cloning, which the radeon man page mentions, doesn't sound like what I want - I don't want identical output on two displays, but rather two displays treated as separate screens and combined using Xinerama. How are the screen and device sections supposed to be set up? Do I need two separate device sections? Two separate screen sections? If I need two device sections, how are they to differ? (I already tried just repeating the device section with different ID's, but it warns me that the busid is repeated and only uses one monitor.) Re: [XFree86] XFree86 4.3.0 and Intel845g, RedHat 8.0
As Cynthia said, the X install worked - it overwrites the xinitrc that redhat supplies. That file is the one that starts Gnome or KDE. Instead, you're now getting twm, an old window manager. Personally I'm working on a redhat 7.3 system, so my re-integrated script may not work for you on 8.0 (in fact it may crash your system, wreck your car, and sleep with your wife, for all I know - NO GUARANTEES!!!), but I've attached it. I'm not very experienced with X configuration - this script may be bad. Comments are welcome (especially since my workstation can use all the help it can get :-) ). All I did was try to merge the script that redhat provides with the script that X provides, giving precendence to redhat settings, with the goal of being able to type startx and get back to kde/gnome. Works for me. YMMV. HTH. :-) Back up your current /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc file and drop the attached file into its place. Then do one of the following: echo KDE /etc/sysconfig/desktop or echo GNOME /etc/sysconfig/desktop ...depending on which desktop you want to run. Your dri question is a separate problem - you seem to need an updated drm kernel module. It's only preventing you from using dri 3d acceleration though, not causing gnome/kde to disappear. -- Trever David J Phillips wrote: Some more information. Re: [XFree86] Out of Luck (tm) with ATI dual monitor ??
Well, my replying to you definitely qualifies as the blind leading the blind, but perhaps you should use the radeon driver for your radeon7500 as well. I'm currently typing this message on an X display powered by a radeon7500 (64MB, PCI) using the radeon driver on X4.2.99.902 (aka 4.3.0 rc2). In other words, in your device section, change this line: Driver ati To this: Driver radeon Please do let me know if it works - I'm especially interested because I'm having a problem getting dual-head going as well, but my symptoms are quite different. Also, I'm curious - why not just use the dvi output of the radeon7500 (assuming yours has one)? Mine came with a dvi out and a vga out, but I had to order the adaptor from ATI to convert the dvi to vga ($5+shipping). I'm still waiting on it, so I can't vouch for how well it works, but I'm hoping to get triple-head working by using the two outputs of the radeon and the one output of the onboard graphics chipset (i810). [XFree86] Please teach me... radeon + i810 = shmat error?
I'm going to summarize first with quick questions since these may be easy for someone: 1. Is it possible / normal for an agp card to show up in the output of lspci? 2. Re: [XFree86] Blurry Monitor
I wish I could help - maybe then I could help myself. I have a system with similar symptoms. I've even explicitely set the hsync and vsync - ie I put in only one value for each, not a range - and it doesn't seem to help. On the other hand, xvidtune claims it's not actually running at exactly the freqs I entered still, so I guess it could still be a sync rate problem. The same monitor works great when being driven by windows. In my case I'm using different systems for linux and windows, so it could be a video card thing, but the card worked fine before I switched the system to linux. The effect I have is one where there's almost a shadow image overlaid on the real image - you can't really see it unless you look at an edge where the intensity of the picture changes - for example, the transition from a light desktop background to a dark xterm window. About 3 millimeters from the edge, you see a phantom edge where everything is a little lighter. It's sort of like someone took a screenshot in the gimp, duplicated the original layer, then moved the new layer a few pixels to the right overlaid it on the using one of the methods that only affects signal intensity. FWIW, I've had the same problem several times in the past and have always wanted to discover the fix, but so far no luck... -- Trever D.
