This is a common symptom on older Red Hat systems. You need to figure out
why your font server (xfs) isn't starting properly.

On the contrary, xfs is up and running. The problem begins when I execute
startx, then xfs crashes. The X font Server was somehow corrupted by the hard
shutdown.

OK. Then, I'll rephrase. You need to figure out why xfs is crashing. Try
restarting it manually. Although, this problem is common with older Red Hat
systems, I have never experienced it myself and don't really know what the
problem might be.

Now that I've got X running with the band-aid fix. I'm going to turn to some
more pressing matters. I'll report back to you when I've run some experiments

I have implemented a band-aid fix. I included the line

FontPath /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc

in my XF86 Config file, X now starts normally with startx and I can print.
This, however, does not correct the fundamental problem created by the power
cut.

[XFree86] X Server Crash on RedHat 8.0

2007-04-13 Thread Adrienne Thompson
I am running RedHat 8.0 3.2-7, with a SIS 620 AGP video card.

I was in the process of loading a large .pcx file in Image Magick when we had a
power cut. On rebooting, I was unable to start X. I am now also unable to print
from the terminal command line.

Can you help me recover? I'm afraid I am not yet a GNU/Linux guru and still
finding my way about after a 2- year long leave of absence :-) I have included
below, inline copies of:

1./var/log/XFree86.0.log
2./etc/X11/XF86Config
3.xcrash12.04.07.txt (saved via $ startx xcrash12.04.07.txt)
4.Xfree86version (saved via $ XFree86 -version XFree86version)
5.noprint (saved via $ lpr XFre86version noprint)

Thank You
Adrienne

Re: [XFree86] x server crash *no graphical interface*

2006-04-05 Thread Mark Vojkovich
This is not XFree86 4.3. This is the output of an old
XFree86 3.x server (the old XF86_SVGA server).

It's also not entirely clear that the server isn't running
properly. If you can move the cursor around, it probably is
and the window manager just isn't starting.

Can you run /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 and get the root weave
and moveable cursor then ctrlaltbackspace to get back to
the console? If so, the server itself is running fine.

Whoops, in this case the server is actually /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA
not /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86. /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 would use
the XF86Config-4 file as its configuration file.

[XFree86] x server crash *no graphical interface*

2006-04-04 Thread sammy n.

hi to all,
i've just installed mandrake linux 9.1 on my pc which also runs winxp
pro.
i have xfree86 version 4.3.0
i've never been able to use the graphical interface (i only use
command line - very laborious). the x server always crashes!
upon starting up the system, the graphical interface doesn't ever
load completely. the screen flickers lots of times then i'm left with
an empty, blue desktop (no icons, no task bar; nothing!) and a busy
cursor.
when i start x, i get the following output:

 Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
 Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority
 Using authority file /root/.Xauthority
 Writing authority file /root/.Xauthority

 Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock and start
again

*after removing /tmp/.X0-lock, startx gives:

 _XSERVTransSocketINETCreateListener:...SocketCreateListener() failed
 _XSERVTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners: server already running

 Fatal Server Error:
Cannot establish any listening sockets - Make sure an X server isn't
already running

*after killing the startx process (using top), i try startx again,
and get:
(i get the same result if i do init 3, then startx)

*graphics card:

*and a 128mb ram.

even after re-installing linux over and over again, this problem
persists.
it would be great if someone could help me out coz i've got no idea
what to do! (and please don't re-direct me to a support centre - i'm
in africa and there are none of those here)
thanks! (sorry if my mail is a little bit long: i just had to show
you how much i've tried)

Re: [XFree86] X server crash... Help

2006-03-12 Thread Mark Vojkovich
The XFree86.0.log file claims you have no configuration file:

(EE) Unable to locate/open config file

You need to generate an XF86Config file (XFree86 -configure). If
you want to run NVIDIA's binary drivers you should follow NVIDIA's
instructions on how to install and configure their drivers.
The failure to restore the console that you describe is a driver
bug.

Mark.

[XFree86] X server crash with Mandrake 10.0

2005-08-30 Thread Leslie B Fleming

Hi,

I am running Mandrake 10.0 on a Medion laptop. After logging on
and issuing the startx command today, I got the following error messages:

Could not init font path element unix/:-1, removing from list!
...

XI0: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server
0.0 after 0 requests (O known processed) with 0 events
remaining.

Gnome had been running very well until today. Yesterday I changed my
security settings from standard to high, which likely introduced the
login prompt on startup (I previously used autologin). But I don't know
if this could be related to the problem. I haven't made any other
configuration changes.

Issuing ps -e indicates that xfs is running. I did try to restart xfs
by using /etc/init.d/xfs restart, but it didn't seem to fix the problem;
startx still fails. I would appreciate any suggestions for what to try
next. The log file is attached.

Thanks,

-Les F.

RE: [XFree86] X Server Crash.

2004-12-09 Thread Mark Vojkovich
I don't know what to tell you. I've heard reports that make
it sound like RedHat 9 mysteriously deletes modules sometimes.
I don't know what to make of it. If you can't find the i810_drv.o
somewhere on your system and move it to /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/
where it's supposed to be, then I suppose you need to find a replacement
i810_drv.o module. You could always reinstall XFree86. Perhaps you
can ask RedHat why your XFree86 modules are disappearing.

Mark.

You appear to be missing a module:

(EE) Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0)

The i810 module is the correct one for your hardware. It
 would normally be at /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i810_drv.o

Re: [XFree86] X Server crash

2004-09-03 Thread Mark Vojkovich
Your FreeBSD security level is too high to allow the X-Window system
to run. I don't know how one goes about changing that because I don't
know much about FreeBSD, but I know that this is a common configuration
mistake.

Mark.

[XFree86] X server crash at reboot

2004-06-25 Thread Ray Chen
Hi, there,

I am using a redhat 7.1 Linux on my desktop with AMD XP 1800+.
In order to run a data analysis application AIPS++, I downloaded
some needed Xwindows libraries such as tcl.so, tk.so probably not
in the same version with my old X11 libraries (can't realy
remember). After I reboot the system, it can't go to the normal
X server login mode, but instead go to level 3 login mode. I can
login as either root or ordinary user but without Xwindow running,
just one black screen. I try to run startx after login, but got
error messages which I also find in /var/log/XFree86.0.log. I want
to recover the system. But I had no experience. So I am seeking
advice from you. What should I do? Get the installation CD for
redhat 7.1 and reinstall the whole system? Or skip part of it,
just install the X11 part? Or I can just download new X11 and
update to the new X11?

I hope anyone can give me a hand. That'll be highly appreciated.

[XFree86] X-Server crash

2004-04-22 Thread sandeep massey

I am having problems loading X-Server in my PC. Details are as follows:
PC : HCL EzeeBee
Processor : AMD Athlon XP +2200 (1.8 GHz)
Video Card : S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR (32.00 MB)
Monitor : HCM780 (HSync: 31.5;VertRefresh : 70)
I have loaded RedHat Linux 7.2 Kernel 2.7-10 alongwith Windows XP on another partition. I boot thru GRUB.
I was able to carry out the installation in Graphical mode and my video card was detected as 'unknown' by setup.
After restarting and booting into Linux the X-Server is not loaded and monitor screen flickers for 2-3 times. Though the runlevel remains 5 but still command line mode is running.
Please help me how to run Linux in Graphical mode.
Hoping for early reply.
Best regards.

[XFree86] X server crash

2003-12-21 Thread Vicki Malcolm Saunders

I have had linux and windows installed in a dual
boot setup for a while, and it worked fine. Then the windowsside got a
virus, and a reformat was required. Windows (XP) reinstalled fine, but the linux
bootloader was removed. Attemting to boot with a bootloader we had placed on a
floppy in expectation of this occurance booted linux, but we recieved multiple
errors regarding a partition on the hard drive containing windows, all
pertaining to /dev/hda2 being a incorrect filesystem type. These errors occurred
even when we deleted the partition hda2. Even with these errors, linux managed
to boot, but was unable to load X. When a manual X startup was attempted, X
crashed and gave directions to the attached logfile. We would greatly appreciate
any help regarding any portion of these problems, but mainly on gettin X to run
properly. Thank you for your time.

[XFree86] X server crash

2003-09-15 Thread kumar

Hi,

I am using XFree86 version 4.3.0 on Red Hat Linux 9 (release 4.3.0-2).

Many times, after restarting my laptop, the X server is unable to start up giving an error that it is unable to load base modules 'bitmap' and 'pcidata'.

I am also using Windows XP SP1 professional edition on my laptop.. The server crash often occurswhen I boot Linux after having used Windows on my previous boot.

I have been unable to solve the crash problem by no means other than having to reinstall RedHat on my laptop again.. The upgrade installation of X Server is not able to work as it terminates with an error.

Could you kindly look into this problem and let me know what can be done (if there is a solution to it)? I have included the log report generated as an attachment to this mail.

Also, please do contact me if you require any details regarding the problem.

Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Kumar Gaurav.

Off hand I would say XFS is not running. Open a terminal and type;

ps | grep xfs

If it is running you should get something similar to this;

xfs 1019 0.0 1.2 7840 6320 ?S21:10 0:00 xfs -port -1
-daemon -droppriv -user xfs

If it is not running, the do a su in a terminal and (I think RH puts it in
the same place as Mandrake) type this;

/etc/init.d/xfs start

then type;

startx

Trying? My contribution was much closer to a feeble wave in the general
direction of something that might lead you one step closer to a solution
if you squint really hard and do all of the work.

There are known bugs in the freetype module. In the
/etc/X11/XF86Config try replacing the freetype module with
xtt. If that doesn't solve your problem, let us know.

You are running the nv driver that came with XFree86
but you have the GLX from NVIDIA's binary drivers installed.
Remove NVIDIA's GLX (/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/extensions/libglx.so)
so that the GLX that comes with XFree86 can get used.

Mark.

Re: [XFree86] X Server crash after upgrade Red Hat 7.1 to Red Hat 9

2003-07-02 Thread James Aley
Hi all,

Sorry I forgot to mention I'm on Mac OSX. Using an iBook.
I'm having a go at installing version 4.3 now, the version of XFree86 I
had sort of appeard when I installed OpenOffice, so I suspect it made a
mess of it, seeing as that didn't work either. I'll let you know what
happens.

Thanks for the help anyways.

[XFree86] X Server Crash

2003-04-02 Thread CCurtis717
I recently installed RH8 and for some reason I can't get 'startx' to work. Every time I try to I get the following error messages.

(-- --) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log"
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()

Fatal server error:
no screens found

XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 Known processed) with 0 events remaining

By the way, I have a Intel 82815 Graphics Controller if that makes a difference and I configured it fine by using 'xf86config', but I still get this error. I've tried reinstalling three times and I get the same thing every time. If there's ANY way you can help me or at least tell me what's going on, I would definitely appreciate it.

RE: [XFree86] X Server Crash

Have you verified that your config file does exist and is where X is looking
for it?** How about permissions on the config file? Can you open the config
file?

If all of the above doesn't apply, then send us your log file.
(/var/log/XFree86.0.log)

HTH,
cyn
** (Often the location of the config file is specified as the -xf86config
option of the Xfree86 command. Which may be inside the startx script. You
didn't say how you were starting X so...)

Try using redhat-config-xfree86. This should produce an XFree86
configuration file /etc/X11/XF86Config.

Hi,

No, I couldn't read anything from the log file. I am not a that good reader of that
file!

Did you run X on this system before? Was it running when it stopped functioning?

You can do one thing. From your console, run Xconfigurator. I think your linux version
is 7.3 or so. Xconfigurator can probe most cards and might pick up yours too. Do you
have
any idea what is the motherboard on your PC?

You can send me the XF86Config-4 file in /etc/X11.

DId you or anyone else fiddle with X settings of late? X4.2.1 can't support 24 bit
color
on 810 based chipsets. Reduce it to 16. Resolution is bad, but you can have X up and
running. I am also told next release of X will sort out this problem.

From looking at your logfile it seems that you have a cirrus graphics
card, while X is configured to use the i810 driver, which is for
intel-based cards. In the Device section of your XF86Config try
changing the line:

Driveri810

to

This is a GDM, and therefore a Gnome problem. There doesn't seem to be
a general gnome-user list, from looking at mail.gnome.org/mailman/
listinfo, so I'd suggest contacting your distribution-specific mailing
lists for more detailed support on this.

That said, you could, as root, create the directory /var/gdm, and give
it appropriate permissions--700 should be fine if it behaves like its
xdm counterpart. The following commands might do the tricl;

  mkdir /var/gdm
  chmod 700 /var/gdm

[XFree86] X Server crash

2003-01-16 Thread Sandeep Kumar
Sir,
I have installed Redhat 8.0 and the XServer crashes everytime i move
from graphical mode to text mode by doing Ctrl+Alt+1(/2/3/4/5/6).Reading
from the XFree86.0.log, I found that there is some problem in AGP GART .
It also gives an error message:

  [drm:i810_flush_queue] *ERROR* lockup

Sir, can you explain the problem to me and specify a way to correct the
problem.
  Thanking you.

agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded.

how about loading the agpgart module manually?
an modprobe or an insmod for that would do the job,
if your chipset is supported by agpgart.

if you dont have that module at all,
then you have to rebuild your Linux kernel.
