[XFree86] problem in xfree
Hi All For an embedded board with powerpc processor, I have successfully cross compiled xfree86 for PPC. I merged the xfree with the nfs. I can able to boot the board with this root file system on loading the prompt it displays all directories but on entring into etc directory, */etc # cd X11 /bin/ash: cd: can't cd to X11* also * /usr # cd X11R6 /bin/ash: cd: can't cd to X11R6* Y this happens ? I can able to list the above files in X11 and X11R6 directory in my local copy but after booting into the board the file system displays the above Any clue ?

I think the most you should need to reinstall would be the RH XFree86 RPMs that came with your distribution. And perhaps there is a subset that just contains the server and modules. Mark. [XFree86] Problem getting xfree to work ( on gentoo )
Hello. I have a running installation of Fedora and have just started to get used to gentoo, in another hard drive. I havent been able to configure gentoo, and dont know what is going on. I have an MSI nvidia GForce card. I have tried starting from a fresh XF86Conf from xf86config to starting from Fedora's xf86cfg is unusable, as it goes out of sync with the screen almost at once, and locks the keyboard (i.e. not even the leds will work, so a hard reboot is in order). When I configured a vga driver with 8bpp and 640x480, the result was that the display area was smaller than the screen, and a single term wouldnt fit. When I used the nv driver, I would get windows that looked out of sync, so much that anything was unreadable (except for the osd display of the monitor) When I used the nvidia driver, the nvidia splash showed up correctly, and the windows appeared ok for an instant, then suddenly it all filled up with different collored squares, like that old c/pascal graphics demo, more or less... and lock the keyboard too. Anyone has any idea what can be wrong? I doubt the XF86Config has anything to do, but here it is, and one log file . (ww) tseng: no matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:65:21:0) A 486DX/66MHz with PCI? Well, the w32p was used on PCI cards, so it must be so. But I really don't trust that BusID... What does lspci say? I had a Tseng ET4000 (I think that's the chip name), but it caused hardware lockups when too much changed on the screen at a time (I could reproduce this with the BIOS menus), so I had to throw it in the garbage. I managed to make it work with XFree86 4.3.0, in a multihead configuration no less, but I only got a valid display one time in ten or so, and it would immediately halt the computer thereafter. But hey, I pulled it from a computer whose motherboard caught fire, so I couldn't really expect it to work right. :^) I use xfree 4.1.0 (ltsp x core 3.0.4) and have tseng et 4000 w32p video card. Can you take this opportunity to upgrade to 4.3.0? Compiling X on a 66MHz, is, to misquote Egbert Eich, no fun. If you can make the binary elsewhere, you should be set. 4.2.0 made some various updates to the tseng driver (http://www.xfree86.org/4.2.0/RELNOTES2.html#3), which you are probably in need of. It could be that upgrading will fix your problem, so go for it. According to http://cvsweb.xfree86.org/cvsweb/xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/tseng/ , the latest change to tseng (aside from removing an #ifdef) predates 4.3.0 by several months, but you should get the latest anyhow since the underlying PCI code, etc, has been updated. Lastly, I have been considering making a couple cheapie dedicated X servers for my house. Will a 486DX2/50MHz work? How about a 486SX/25MHz? [XFree86] Problem with xfree / ATI M7 / grsec: Can't mmap BIOS
Today, I installed Gentoo's latest stable kernel 2.4.20-gentoo-r1 which includes the GR security patches. I have enabled the kmem protection of the GR security patches, which prohibits writing to /dev/kmem and /dev/mem (and also mmapping them for write) and opening /dev/port, but - according to the documentation - specifically allows xfree to mmap video memory. With the new kernel, xfree fails to start: * First, it gives an error message about being unable to access the BIOS: (EE) RADEON(0): Cannot map SYS BIOS * Then, it gives up with the following message: Fatal server error: xf86MapVidMem: Could not mmap framebuffer (0x,0x1000) (Operation not permitted) (Note that the mapped address is 0, which looks extremely strange to me!) The same configuration (also with grsec's kmem switched on!) worked fine for me with the previous Gentoo kernel (2.4.19-r10) and the same xfree. It also works with the new kernel if kmem protection is disabled. This is on a sony notebook with an ATI M7. Questions: * Does xfree mmap the BIOS read/write and why? * What consequences will it have if the BIOS is not accessible (on a notebook, with the builtin flat panel). * Is the strange framebuffer mmap a consequence of the BIOS problem? * Any tips or help concerning grsec and xfree? Looks like a partial upgrade and the modules are mismatched. Check the compiled for messages in the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file. All the modules should be the same version as the server. Mark.
