no log, otherwise it would be too easy to use XMail :-)

 How may I inform back to the user that it's mail server is in a black list
 and cannot relay to our server?, some postmaster explanation?
blacklisting is a pre-enter filter, messages of listed IP will never go
inside XMail ( if you set the rule to 1 ).

Are you sure that no anti-spam or some script is running in your server?
Xmail, by default, doesn´t add entries in theses files automatically.

Try to monitor these files with something like:
http://www.ihaveapc.com/2011/11/how-to-monitor-file-system-changes-in-linux-in-real-time/

to see which process is adding these entries.

 Hi,

 I'm not sure why this doesn't work, but for the performance, It might
 also not be a good idea to have the domains folder and the spool folder
 in different locations. I do think XMail does move files between those
 folders, which isn't the same as copying a file and then deleting the
 original file. If both folders are on the same partition, moving a file
 doesn't require actually copying its contents, it simply is linked to a
 different location. If you're moving a file from one partition to an
 other, this however does result in making a copy and then deleting the
 original. So if most mails on your mailserver end up in a mailbox, then
 it would be better to have spool and domains folder on the same
partition.

 In the light of this: I would be interested to know when XMail moves
 files and when it makes a copy. I have for example read that setting the
 temp-folder in memory would be a good thing to do. But if files are
 moved in and out of the temp folder instead of being copied there,
 this might not be such a good idea. Does anybody have an insight on
this?

 Bart Mortelmans

I'm testing filters.

With phpxmail I had create this off-line In filter:

#cat /var/MailRoot/filters/testfilter.tab
/var/MailRoot/filters/test.sh   A   B

#cat /var/MailRoot/filters/test.sh
#!/bin/sh
echo $1 $2  /var/MailRoot/logs/test

Then I had send a mail to myself and filters log show:
Exec Result = 0
  Exit Code = 1
 Executable = /var/MailRoot/filters/test.sh;A;B;

But nothing change in var/MailRoot/logs/test.

Then I try this:

#cat /var/MailRoot/filters/testfilter.tab
/var/MailRoot/filters/test.sh A B

But filters log show:
Exec Result = -92
  Exit Code = -1
 Executable = /var/MailRoot/filters/test.sh A B;

And nothing change in var/MailRoot/logs/test.

Why are you's so against XMail changes like this. Theirs no down side to
this. And it would make XMail alot more intergrade ability into most
systems.

Frankly I'm tired of trying to work around XMails short coming when it comes
to trying to integrate it into a real mail system. I mean really I think the
only thing that keeps some people using XMail is it filtering simplicity.
Also I want is to make it easier to make XMail play nicer with other
services. With the need to do more coding to get around it's.

PS. And if you really think about, For as must as XMail claim to be so
indepent and require nothing from any thing else to run. It's 100% reliant
on everything else to make it in the real world. To give it SSL you need
outside help. To give it the ability to use imap you need outside help (and
you know what I'm tired of hear he's working on. because really I dought
we'll ever see XMail w/ IMAP). And these are just two examples of outside
dependency. That just about everyone needs to setup to work about XMail and
it's Ideals of self contained XMail server.

Again all's I'm asking for is the ablilit to make xmail intergrate better
with the system it run on. Why should we need to code for something that
XMail could do when it's already do that thing for it self. What it so bad
about wanted XMail to be able to set the passwords/create users/delete users
for other system apps ?

 Polling for changes to mailusers.tab takes relatively no resources, and
 can be done in very few lines of code:

 #!/bin/sh
 #
 XMAIL_USERFILE=/var/MailRoot/mailusers.tab
 TMP_FILE=/tmp/tmp_mailusers.tab
 while true
 do
 if [ $XMAIL_USERFILE -nt $TMP_FILE ]
 then
   # file has been updated
   sleep 1
   # run my sync script here
   /myscriptspath/myupdtatescript
   touch -r $XMAIL_USERFILE $TMP_FILE
 fi
 sleep 2

 It's difficult for me to ask Davide to implement a feature like CTRL
 filters for something I can solve otherwise so easily.

 If Davide was to add CTRL filters, I rather see it hit the filter for
 every CTRL command, allowing one to implement just about anything --
 including CTRL access restrictions based on the CTRL user. However,
 native IMAP support is still much higher on my list of wants.

[xmail] Add/Delete/Change password for users

2005-11-10 Thread Chris L. Franklin
I think it would be nice if, It where possible to have Filters for when a
admin added/delete/ ..etc a users. These filters could do all kinds of things
like sync a users xmail password with other out side programs. OR Check if the
password is complex/long enough.

Really the goal (in my mind) would be to make it easier to sync xmail passwords
with out side programs (like ftp,webmin,etc). But there could other uses for
them too.

Thanks all but we know now to sync all these things with xmail. But it would
be alot easyer if if xmail could run some out side script filter what ever
to do all this. It would use up less time and resources.

Pooling for changes that might or might not have been made to the
mailusers.tab is just a plain waste. When in the end you could just push the
changes.

And as a side note. The Password sync'ing was only one idea. There would be
other neat addons if these filters where avaible.

Make sure you restart the email server after installing the filter
Make sure you have service clamd running.

But the dependency builder did not filter it out. Just build binaries from
scratch until they fix RPM scripts.

You can also force the install by telling to ignore dependencies, and
that should work.

[xmail] Re: Traffic shaping

2005-10-06 Thread Chris L. Franklin

Liam wrote:

Hello all,

I wish to add some sort of shaping to XMail. Currently, my server resides on
a 512/512k connection, which is also shared with a business premesis. When an
attachment is sent/received, XMail maxes out the connection while it does its
thing.
Is there any way to make only a portion of the available bandwidth available
for XMail? Even if it was only the SMTP server that was restricted, that'd be
fine.

Thanks in advance,

Liam

[xmail] SMTP ext. Auth

2005-09-21 Thread Chris L. Franklin

I was wondering if there was any more talk about making XMail SMTP
external Auth act just like it's pop3 external auth. (This would remove
the need to sync passwords with xmail and leave just leave the need to
Sync needed accounts)

As long as the size of the messages inside the mailbox is smaller than=20
your MaxMbSize, XMail will accept incoming messages. That is the nature=20
of SMTP. The Mailserver does not know the size of the remote message=20
until the message is completly received. And it can send the mailbox=20
full error code only after the RCPT TO command.

So you'll have to live with that.

[xmail] Mystery

2005-03-07 Thread Jeffrey L. Conley

Occasionally inbound email will just hang in the server. These are just
random emails on random accounts. Other emails going to the same account
will be properly delivered. It is happening about twice a week. If I
shutdown and restart Xmail all the hung emails are delivered to the correct
accounts. I can find nothing unusual in the logs. All of these emails make
it past both of my filters.

I am running Xmail 1.21 on RH 9.0 I am running glst and spf at
filters.pre-data.tab

I tried that with the ones that were coming to me and I have even tried
having the original sender resend the same exact message, they came through
just fine, with the filters turned on. This seems to be totally random and
not filter related so far as I can see.

Do you have copies of the emails that are hanging the server? I had a few
that did the same thing a while back, but could never find them to reproduce
the problem. If you can find them, try sending them back to the server with
filters turned off and see if it happens again.

I had suspected that there was the possilibity of some malformated messages
that could hang XMail, but could never completely track it down. In my
case, I had to delete all the messages from the queue for XMail to return to
normal.

[xmail] SMTP external Auth help

2005-01-26 Thread Chris L. Franklin
Okay So I got pop3 to auth against system account password with a lightly
modded perl to pam script (some one else wrote and posted to this list).
[Code]
#!/usr/bin/perl
use Authen::PAM;
# arguments: (1)user (2)password
my $username = shift;
my $password = shift;
if($username =~/(.+)[EMAIL PROTECTED]/) {
 $username=$1;
}
$service = passwd;
sub my_conv_func {
  my @res;
  while ( @_ ) {
 my $code = shift;
 my $msg = shift;
 my $ans = ;
 $ans = $username if ($code == PAM_PROMPT_ECHO_ON );
 $ans = $password if ($code == PAM_PROMPT_ECHO_OFF );
 push @res, (PAM_SUCCESS,$ans);
  }
 push @res, PAM_SUCCESS;
 return @res;
}

ref($pamh = new Authen::PAM($service, $username, \my_conv_func)) ||
   die Error code $pamh during PAM init!;

$res = $pamh-pam_authenticate;
exit($res);
[/Code]

And in my MailRoot/userauth/pop3 i created a '.tab' and put this inside it :
userauth[TAB]/var/MailRoot/bin/Authpam.pl[TAB]@@USER[TAB]@@PASSWD

No big deal pop3 work great. Now my problem is how could I go about getting
smtp to basicly work the same way ? (part of my problem is i don't find the
XMail docs (ReadMe) to be all that help full when it comes to this.)

XMail exmaples looks like this :
external  auth-name secretprog-path arg-or-macro

So when i break down the columns I see this:
external: Write external here so that xmail knows to run a external program
/ script
auth-name : replace this with the smtp auth type cram-md5,login,plain
secret : No clue ???
prog-path : Path to the script or program
arg-or-macro : this can be @@CHALL,@@SECRT, and or @@RFILE

Basicly I've tryed everything I can think of to get this to work like the
pop3 auth. But i just can seem to grasp Somthing ?

[xmail] Re: SMTP external Auth help

2005-01-26 Thread Chris L. Franklin
OKay so I thought i had this ting figured out, But seem not to have. But
heres what I got.

smtpextauth.tab
LOGIN System-Auth /var/MailRoot/bin/Smtpauth.pl @@CHALL @@FSECRT
@@DGEST

Now Smtpauth.pl is a simple script that really just takes the 3 line args
and outputs them to a log file (just to see what they'd say).

But when ends up happening is well nothing except for the fact when i run a
EHLO domain against my server it now lists TWO login Auth types and the
script is ever run.

EHLO out put:
250-AUTH LOGIN PLAIN CRAM-MD5 LOGIN

So basicly it looks like with smtpextauth.tab is that it's there not so much
to act like pop3's External Auth but to allow you to add your own Auth
type to Xmail's Auth types (those being Login,plain,cram-md5).

Or am i completely wrong?

 According to xmail doc, you should use SMTPEXTAUTH.TAB file ...

 It seems placement of files for custom authentifications is not as =

 except if I missunderstood the doc ... (and it can be, as English is =
 not my

 To enable xmail SERVER part to Authenticate a POP3 USER using an =

 use xmailroot/userauth/pop3 directory with domain.tab files

 To enable xmail SERVER part to Authenticate a SMTP USER using an =

 To enable xmail CLIENT part to BE authenticated using an EXTERNAL =
 program by
 a mail server
 (when xmail want to send out as a client)
 use xmailroot/userauth/smtp directory with domain.tab files

 And don't know where to insert SMTPAUTH.TAB ;-)

 In my mind, if
 userauth/pop3/... is used for external authentification for POP3 =
 (incoming)
 USERS,
 userauth/smtp/... should be used for external authentification for SMTP
 (incoming) USERS ...

 (this permit a by domain choice for external programs ...)
 and smtpextauth.tab for xmail AS a smtp client ...

 OR defining a more clear structure :

 userauth/pop3/... for xmail as a SERVER authenticating a incoming =
 client
 userauth/smtp-in/... for xmail as a SERVER authenticating a incoming =
 client
 userauth/smtp-out/... for xmail as a CLIENT to be authenticated by a
 OUTGOING smtp client

 (just some ideas ...)

Hi all. I'm still making a nice happy Fedora Core 3 box. Has anyone here
ever moved mailboxes from a Win32 machine to a *nix machine? I have
several users with mail still in their mailboxes. I'm hoping a copy will
work, but I'd like to see if anyone has any advice before I attempt it.
Create users first? Copy whole user directories?

Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks,

You should have specified that you have to add -Mm to the command line,
otherwise is never gonna work, since XMail uses Maildir on Unix.

[xmail] Xmail + Imap (Non-Courier) Setup

2005-01-15 Thread Chris L. Franklin
I finally got around to writing up a How-to. On how-to set Xmail + Dovecot.
(which will handle both Imap + Pop3)
I know Xmail handles Pop3. But I've found I have less issues with users who
use a combo of Pop3 + imap.
If the Service that handles pop3 also handles imap. This setup is IMHO alot
easier and there no need patch either
programs software to get them to work together.(aka you can always stay on
top of keeping them updated with out worry)

 Hi,

 I thought about integrating SA into a XMail SMTP Filter, so that it =
 would be
 possible to reject SPAM directly. At the SMTP Stage, XMail hasn't put =
 it's
 headers into the spoolfile - IMHO SA *needs* this headers for looking up
 HELO/IP/etc. Now Davide could change the code that the headers are there =
 in
 the spoolfile at this stage, but I guess he doesn't want to and he has =
 good
 reasons for this. I think it's possible to build the Received header =
 from
 scratch from the INFO-DATA by my own, prepend it to the spoolfile and =
 pass
 the whole thing (without the XMail Headers) to spamc.

 Any thoughts?

You need to add xnet entries to whitelist your nets. Take a look at the doc.
I also need to add a feature in XMail, so that certain filters execution
can be skipped, if the user authenticate. ATM you can either change GLST
code or wrap GLST with a script (this using @@USERAUTH).

Nope. Just use the glst.conf file that you can find inside the cfg=20
directory of the tarbal.

I had the same error on my primary but everything worked fine on my
secondary. I just copied the files from the secondary and all is well.

Both machines are RH 9.0 and are pratically identical, t thougth it was just
a file that I had corrupted on my end.

[xmail] Sending email

OK I now have 2 email severs that I can't send to due to them. Telling
me my email server Your mailer tried to send an e-mail message to a
server running qmail. Unfortunately, qmail spotted a problem: your
mailer sent a bare LF. so to fix this i had to write a filter that
converted all email to CRLF.

Go to www.xmailserver.org, there are two that should run fine since
you're probably running Perl for Win as well. I've used them both but
currently use the bsa_filter.pl so forwarding/deleting can be done.

Do you need a full blown SpamAssassin on Windows? For that you will need to
use ActivePERL, but you will not be able to use some important features like
DCC, Razor2, and Pyzor (among other). If you want all those features on a
Windows box, then you need to install SpamAssassin under CygWin for
Windows... that gives you everything.

If you just need a SpamC written specifically for XMail for Windows... I
wrote one. (I run SpamD on a SuSE Linux box). It is a single EXE file and
you call it from FILTERS.IN.TAB.

That all night and fine if you using a windows server ;)

-- Chris L. Franklin --

 Problem with this would be that it is xmail that reads and processes the
 server.tab file, little late to say what user it should run as.

 Actually I think you can just set the user id and password on the service
 properties in the services manager.

 and setable by the server.tab file.

 Ps. And yes i know you can do it by fallowing the directions found at

[xmail] Re: Block (some) attachments

2004-10-12 Thread Chris L. Franklin
Hello all,

I totally agree that all messages regardless of whom they are from
or to should be scanned. But
in the way I look at it it's alot easy'er and better (in my opinion) to
scan as much as you can at the smtp
level. ( in my case I scan for spam , invaild attachments, and soon
virus) heres my reason why:

Spam:
1. Anything be classify'ed as spam is reject with the error 550 error
this does 3 jobs.
Delete the message, Sends back a error to the sender as way (during
the smtp chat,
so as not to have to send a email back. to what might be a fake
account), and lastly it
does it in self help to cut down on spam. Due to the fact the new
spamming programs
do under stand what the 550 really means (it means non-existing
account). So so after
a few (about 3) 550 error to the same account. They stop sending (if
any would like
to see I do have the logs to help show this).

Attachments:
1. The easy'est reason for this is so you don't have to send back a full
blown email to the
 sender of the attachment (which might also be fake, thus wasting
more bandwith). But
 you are still able to notifiy, the sender of the problem and how he
might want to fix it.

Virus':
1. Really the reasons for this are the same as the Other 2.
 A. Notify sender or virus with out wasting bandwidth
 B. Not allowing virus any farther into your system then they have
to go.

Ps. These reay just my reasons for doing more scanning more at he smtp
level..

In my own view, the best place to put an AV/anti-attach filter is in
filters.post-data.tab (since you want to filter all messages regardless of
whom they are from or to). But I had to add an AV check - besides rejecting
exes, pifs and things like that - because I didn't want to prevent users
from sending zip attachments, nor to let zipped viruses in.

Originally, FLAVS was designed to be a filters.in filter and to send a
virus found notification (which is very bad practice). Be sure to modify
FLAVS so that it sends an appropriate 550 SMTP error message (look at the
section on the .rej file in the source code).

Ciao, Francesco

Heres a smtp filter script that'll do that. you tell it what extention
to filter and if ones found it sends back a 550 .
error with a short message telling the sender why there message wasn't
excepted.

It can be found here :

PS. If needed I can rewrite by org. one that was just written in bash.
But it is slower can consumes ALOT more system resources.

 Hello,
1.) I guess my first question is do you have any form of perl installed on
your server ?
2.) Shouldn't there be a comma between exe and zip?
Nope I want to block exe.zip.

-- Chris L. Franklin --

Chris hi,

Will it work on windows?
I've tried the following:
e:/xmail/filters/attachment_block.pl @@FILE

But I'm unsure about the first 2 lines on the .pl file:
#!/usr/bin/perl
And $Attachments = 'exe.zip,vbs'

Will it find my perl.exe using windows paths? Shouldn't there be a comma
between exe and zip?

Thanks,

Michael.

2004-10-11 Thread Chris L. Franklin
 Hello,
If you Don't send back a error 550 and just a error message then, that
sending server will try over and over again to send the message. Because
it'll just disregruad the error message thinking that the remote server just
dropped the call. (This goes VERY true with other xmail server, thus the
whole reason for reporting back a 550 + a error message.)

-- Chris L. Franklin --

Hey there Chris,

Can you not send back the 550 error message?
Can you sent it to send the full message with attachment to the
administrative mail box?

I had thought of that of that but then Lets say I wanted to use

Then it couldn't bind to that port.

One of the real reason for this is that I use Courier-IMAP. But as we
all know if you use that then
you can't use the standard pop3 that xmail uses. Due to it only liking
CRLF line returns. So
my thought was to just have Courier deal with both the IMAP and the POP3.

there to be non-system users under each of these, for example

joeblow # system user, able to log in, etc
- jimblow # These users can't log in, not on system, only in
xmail's=20
authentication
- janeblow #

What I have now is an xmail user that corresponds with each system user,
=

but the passwords are not the same if only one is changed. It really=20
isn't a problem, I just wanted to know if there was a better way to
do=20
it. I have considered using sendmail, but I am not sure if it can do=20
both either.

Let me know if you think of anything

POP# sync'd messages are already injected in the spool, so they are
already subject to either in or out filters.

Problably whats to have a port like 26 that seen only from the lan and

Currently, I accept connections on port 25 (SMTP) and port 587 (MSA). I
want port 25 to accept mail for local accounts without auth as normal,
but I want to require auth on port 587... The more I think about it, I

 Is there anyone else like me, lurking in this list, who uses Courier
 IMAP and has no troubles whatsoever using XMailServer+Courier IMAP with
 SquirrelMail and/or Thunderbird on Windows?

  Mircea,

  Thank you! I have applied both patches below and have tested that
Windows
  versions of Outlook 2000 and Thunderbird 0.7.3 are now reading messages
  properly from the server. And of course the Linux apps and Squirrelmail
  still work as well.

  Nice to see these patches are keeping pace with new versions of XMail
and
  Courier-IMAP.

  Thanks again.

 1. Can the fix Mircea did for earlier versions be tweaked a little to
 work with XMail v1.20? This would be the most simple and quickest

 Mircea, can you rediff over 1.20?

  Hi Davide, before links to the latest versions of our patches here are
 some needed explanations because it seem to be a bit of confusion about
 what those patches do, so here we go:

We have http://mircea.smartpost.ro/download/POP3Svr2.cpp.diff.bz2
that
 is a patch for the POP3 server component of XMailserver that eliminate
 double messages and other confusion due to the peculiar way of
 Courier-IMAP stroring messages in folders. This patch is small,
 non-intrusive and altough specialised four Courier-IMAP way of storing
 data I think that it can be integrated until Xmailserver will get IMAP
 because from my experience and others it seem to be the best solution
 until native IMAP

We also have
 http://mircea.smartpost.ro/download/courier-imap-crlf.patch.bz2 that is
 patch for the Courier-IMAP daemon that make it work with cr/lf
 terminated files of Xmail, while this patch is more complex is also
 clear what it does and was rejected by Sam of Courier fame only because
 of political reasons like a Unix program has to deal with the Unix way
 of storing files.. But aside from this the patch integrates perfectly
 with Courier-IMAP at least until version 3.0.6 ( not tested yet with
 3.0.7 but I'll do it soon ) and we use it here to a score of quite busy
 servers and never got Peter's problem with thunderbird and attachments,
 bug reports are welcome.

  In the end, to have an working instalation you'll need to patch both
 programs and recompile them, some RPMS for Mandrakelinux 9.2 are in
 http://mircea.interplus.ro/ftp/ultraupdates and Radu Spineanu that is
 also on that list maintain Debian packages.

   Hope that helps and we pray that soon we'll have native IMAP ;)

 Best regards,

 Mircea Ciocan
