I was looking at the code today and realized that it's not as easy to
embed webcam streams into the chatwindow for a Mac. There's only one
grabber window for all the calls so it has to be done in a different way.
I'm afraid I'll break everything if I try it,

Not quite. Menu button called ::tk::FirstMenu which bugged so I
substituted it with an empty proc, and made ctrl+click fire Button3
events if we're on maemo.

Instead of having an option to not use the
backgrounds etc, just add a skin without all
these features and load it by default. You
could ship the full blown skin too so users who
would like to have a better looking but
slower amsn could change to that skin.
