[Apple-Crop] Rootstock flowers

2018-03-26 Thread maurice tougas
While handling/planting G41/Honeycrisp a number of trees broke at union. We
decide to plant rootstock with intent of returning to graft craps or other
var for pollination. Can anyone tell me if we simply allow G41 to grow will
we see flowering adequate for pollination?

Thanks,
Mo Tougas

Re: [Apple-Crop] Test, IFTA in NZ, and MyIPM

2018-02-18 Thread maurice tougas
Michael,

I've given sweepings to locals with pigs, and feed to my few dozen goats,
but otherwise they just make a smelly compost. I can mechanically pick up
in two days what used to take 18 man days so we aren't too far off of where
we'd like to be. For $10,000 the Perouso looks interesting if I can reduce
the number of passes thru the orchard. Scalping has also been an issue
we've been trying to deal with. Pretty easy to shave up and sweep an eight
foot by five foot strip of turf into sweeper.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

 Hi Kurt,

I've seen units there but as you say no cider maker would be happy with
stones in the bin. We're at the point of raking them out from under trees
with either a paddle rake or spider to drive middles (more or less) and
then either sweeping with modified Sweepster or grinding with flair chopper
and then fluffing up the mash a day or two later to facilitate drying.
Capacity of sweepster pretty small. I did hear of a Perouso Koalo 1600
https://www.peruzzousa.com/Collection_Flail_Mowers_s/106.htm but of course
apples would be of no use but at least orchard would be clean, I'm
guessing. I don't know if there is a market for whats left on the ground
Monday mornings.

We make whips work as well as feathered trees by growing the tree strongly
the first couple years. Don't head, get them to 10' asap.I've found they
fill in fine over the next two or three years. Whips won't produce as
quickly as well feathered though. At times we are sold "feathered" trees
which are actually "branched" trees that need to have branches removed so
as to allow tree to gain height and allow for feather development. The only
things I head, or pinch, are feathers in top one third of tree to reduce
auxin production and encourage more feathers below. Maxcel may help, but
frankly I've done a couple of controlled trials and after year three can't
find treated trees.

Re: [Apple-Crop] Newbie Orchardist questions Herbicide on First Year Plantings

2017-05-10 Thread maurice tougas
Try Scythe made by Gowan. It is quite a bit more expensive but also quite a
bit safer for someone new to the practice. It works similarly to Gramoxone
when used at the higher labeled rates.

[Apple-Crop] Cueva/Double Nickel

2017-05-01 Thread maurice tougas
A couple years ago I recall discussion regarding the use of Cueva/Double
Nickel combination as an alternative and/or rotation with strep for
fireblight management. Is anyone aware of further research regarding this
combination esp as to regards to crop safety and efficacy ?

I agree that it's great to be out pruning. I disagree that you should
expect a longer productive life with high density systems. My goal here is
to be looking at replanting when the orchard reaches twenty years or so.
New varieties, strains of varieties and improved planting system encourage
5% renewal in my opinion.

My best to you
