You are correct,  and I apologize for taking the time on this. The 
culprit was a code (modify-syntax-entry ?\\ "w")


I know I needed it years ago for something, commenting it out makes 
everything works.

IIUC, AUCTeX actually does what you're looking for.  Or am I missing something?

Hello all,

I would like not to fontify \% (an actual percentage sign)  but still 
fontify % (the comment character on its own)


I think auctex declares the comment character and lets emacs fontify it 
through the Show Font Lock Comment Face and Font Lock Comment Delimiter 
Face. However emacs recognizes the el mode comment character and does 
correct the fontification when it finds \: (i.e. it does not fontify the 
line)



Anyway to tell it to do the same for the latex comment character?
