Re: [Aus-soaring] iGlide Application
Hi Stuart I have asked the same question, but I don't think anybody has tried it yet. I decided to bite the bullet and just buy a copy, but since it is not available on the Australian Apple store, I could not. I think that to purchase this you will need an account on the German or English iTunes. Since my phone is nearing its contract end I'll probably just get the new Galaxy S2 and run XCsoar on android instead. Re: [Aus-soaring] iGlide Application
Folk, I tried this for fun on my iPad when flying in the Pooch as coach, and it works fine apart from the fact that the iPad objects to high temps in the cockpit and shutdown mid flight. not to mention battery life as an issue when using GPS and 3G network...to get real time weather and NAV. Lots of apps with potential for the iPad but will need some work before it's reliable for use as a primary NAV or comp instrument, but it's only a matter of time. Re: [Aus-soaring] iGlide Application
Hi Mike, I have a HTC Desire HD which I use as a backup logger (running XCSoar) in the cockpit, and find to be superior in brightness and contrast to my old pda (hx4700). Many of the XCSoar developers have 5 Android Dell Streaks (http://www.dell.com/au/p/mobile-streak/pd), which have a transflective display (uses the sun as the backlight), and they seem to have superb sun-readability, far better than AMOLED, LCD or any other screens I'm aware of. I'm not aware of anyone mass producing com-port cables for Android hardware yet, but it is possible to make your own. The popular method at the moment is to use a K6-bt (http://www.cumulus-soaring.com/k6.htm), a small device you can plug any gps source (cambridge/flarm etc) and then use bluetooth to connect to it. This will also allow you to control the cambridge/flarm from XCSoar, no hacking required! Having had bad experiences with Windows CE/Mobile and bluetooth in the past I was somewhat skeptical of bluetooth for navigation, but I hear that Android's bluetooth stack is as reliable as using a cable. ~Matthew~ On Sun, May 29, 2011 at 6:03 PM, Mike Borgelt mborg...@borgeltinstruments.com wrote: At 06:08 PM 29/05/2011, you wrote: Hi Stuart I have asked the same question, but I don't think anybody has tried it yet. I've been reading the PPRuNe threads on this sad business since day one. (OK I know some people will claim that PPRuNe is full of BS etc, but I see it as any other group of pages on the internet - of which much the same can and must be said - this group excepted of course). Only in the last few days has this astonishing SOP been revealed. There are reasons behind it of course, and they are interesting and partly logical, but the basic concept remains completely foreign to what most of us would expect, and on this occasion it failed everyone on board with tragic results. This policy and others will be dissected extensively in extensive meeting rooms and courts of law over the next few years. It's not over yet. I know nothing about nothing which is probably apparent from my postings, but can someone tell me, do instruments like an artificial horizon give these pilots any indication of nose angle or angle of incidence? I was attempting to explain a stall like this to #2 wife and had difficulty understanding why they did not put the nose down or look at an instrument to tell them their AOA since they would have had some minutes to think about this during what appears to have been a tail down plunge. At least if the SOPs have changed, I can persuade her to get on another plane.
