Dear List
As some-one who plays exclusively the French repertory, I'm now looking
to explore Weiss a little. Can anyone let me know what the best primary
sources for his 11c music are? I suspect that the London ms is probably
one - but how much of it is for 11c lute?
Best wishes
the entire Paris MS is for the 11-course lute. Charming stuff BTW
Best wishes

best wishes

Harrach. Most of it is for 11-course lute, but it's a mixed bag and some
movements that would be hard to play on only 11. Some sonatas are pastiches
of movements that were probably not intended to be played
Just received the new CD of Hagen lute trios with John Schneiderman (Dorian

It is probably the first recording of chamber works with lute that is
flattering to our instrument.
Excellent music, excellently performed and excellently recorded.
Emphatically recommended.

Probably Thomas means the In Venetiis - this is 11-course music
completely.
There we have mostly really early works of Weiss and some French works
also, possibly from 1712 - but the date can hardly be read.
The Weiss a Rome is a much later manuscript (although some of the
music is very early
I've spent some time with the Weiss `a Rome MS over the years, and
find the pieces attributed to Weiss to be what one would expect of
juvenalia. Some interesting ideas, harbingers of things to come, but
little more than that.
That said, I've performed the Db (i.e., d minor)
