Previously we have used a harness that attached

A teacher in my daughter's school got a berner pup a few weeks ago for a
surprise gift from her husband and realizes now that she can't take care of
it. She has a newborn baby and a 10 year old Golden Retriever and the pup is
just too much for her. He's a 10 week old male that her husband
Since it has been raining fairly steadily (after a long, long period of
drought), we are pulling off a record number of dog ticks! Some are alive
but most are dead. One was found, bloated, on the floor.
The last time I dosed my dogs was August 22. Frontline advises a
one-a-month application
I was wondering the same thing too. I found two dead engorged deer ticks on
the floor, one on my puppy, one on one cat and 7 ticks in various states of
engorgement(?) on my old cat. I put Frontline Plus on all three pets in
mid-October. I couldn't sleep that night - I was so itchy!!

My vet discouraged me from microchips. She said that not many places had
scanners and that my dog would have to be anesthetized because the needle is
so big. I'm wondering if the chips have changed and she isn't up to date on
them. I still want to get one done.

I would think your vet is either out of date, or doesn't have the
technology/experience with microchips. More and more places have scanners now.
Your dog would not need to be anesthetized! It's just like getting a
vaccine - the needle is large, but no larger than a good sized IV
needle.
I love my flexis, especially for long walks in areas like conservation
areas and hiking trails where the dogs must be leashed, as they do allow
the dogs to sniff and act like dogs without walking right beside me the
whole time - but I have found that I need to replace them after about a year.
FWIW - I like Innova and my dog did well on it.
My cats did not. I fed Iams to everyone for five years, but switched after
learning more about Innova. About a year after I made the switch, one of
my cats became VERY sick with bladder stones and required surgery. About
the same time another

Hi!
We also live in the area, and Dr. Shea, at the Los Gatos Dog and Cat
hospital is excellent. He has treated and looked after many Berners in the
area, including the famous Bosco of Los Gatos Bears in the Wood. Our dogs,

I microchipped all 3 of my cats as they were walking across my kitchen floor

and glides underneath the skin rather effortlessly. We often microchip young

How unfortunate. We have had exactly the opposite experience. All our

these dogs has been everything a breeder could hope for. Of course,

Hi All,
I have a co-worker whose husband wants a pug and is likely to buy the first one he
comes across. I'm trying to get them in touch with some responsible pug people. Does
anyone have any experience with this breed and can you direct me to some good
resources/mentors? Thanks

On another list, the subject of female dog urine killing grass has come up,

currently arguing about that (the argument's been ongoing for almost 4 years
now).
Six years ago, when we built our house, we put in a 25x35

bad orthopedics are not caused by food -- it is in the genes I am afraid.
Mary-Ann and all,
I have to totally disagree that bad orthopedics are not/can not be caused by
food.
While heredity is a major factor you can *cause* orthopedic problems in a

While I admire your diplomacy (as always :), saying that diet and exercise
will make a problem worse is very different from suggesting that diet causes

Why does it matter? Because when breeders hide behind the belief that diet

Here is question. If a puppy x-rayed 12 months would have fair hips. What
would that puppy have at 12 months if it had been jogged with its owner on
sidewalks or blacktop roads at a very young age. My guess is that its hips
would be worse than fair. That is just my opinion for what's its worth.

I know lots of people do x-ray prior to whelping, and my understanding is
that the risk to the pups is minimal. I elected not to x-ray because of the
following:
1. Minimal risk is still risk;
2. Not 100% accurate anyway; and
3. A medical procedure for bitch -- I do not think she needed that

Every dog I have ever seen fed as a puppy on Innova has orthopedic

I am as devastated as I can possibly be. I am in shock. Perhaps I am
