Re: [Bes-admins] SQL Database Move
Follow along with RIM's guidelines here and things should go smoothly. I've done this move several times, and downtime is very minimal. In my case, the users didn't even know it happened. Re: [Bes-admins] SQL Database Move
Check the docs. There are specific things you must do on the SQL server (including some scripts which modify things outside the BES DB.) Simply moving the database won't work. Re: [Bes-admins] SQL Database Move
In our case, the DB move went very smoothly. However, as Michael and Rich have both asserted to, the new SQL server needs to have the BES scheme updated in its master tables or something like that. To get around that we simply allowed BES to create a new database on the destination SQL server, then swapped the configuration to use our live BES DB again. Good luck. Richard PS Should be no appreciable downtime from a user perspective. Re: [Bes-admins] SQL Database
I agree with Rich Don. You've outgrown MSDE long ago. You'd want to have the SQL database/server in the same data center. If it's in a remote data center, then you would ideally want to have a redundant network path to get to it. In case of an outage, the BES can operate ok without being able to access the DB for a short time - though you wouldn't be able to add/delete/modify users until the DB came back online. We're using MS SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition - SP2. The server is in the same data center as our 3 BES (4.1.6 MR5) 3 Exchange 2007 SP1 servers. 1800 BlackBerry's Get the DBA's to buy off on it, and it's really easy. RIM doesn't tend to make a lot of changes to the DB except in the major releases... 4.0, 4.1 5.0. Sometimes a service pack will have a DB modification, though it's rare (imho). Always read the release notes and if there's a change to the DB, get the DBA's involved. Re: [Bes-admins] SQL Database
Thank you so much for the detailed response. I am going to get our DBA's involved and get cracking on this upgrade. Its hard to get things to happen fast in my company so this has been a bit procrastinated. But we crashed last week so now there is no time to play.
