The Apple bluetooth keyboard works perfectly with J on my iPad. It's

put you through the welcome again.
I think in the case you describe the return button is not red and the rest
of the buttons show.
As you are not in a special situation, the return button with an empty
sentence does

Ahhh! Good point! After a close/restart the welcome script is not run so
you don't see the red return with all the other controls hidden. But in
this case the 'offer' to run the examples should not be shown!
