Cobourg harbour, largely unfrozen today, holds a basic-plumaged Red-necked
Grebe among many Long-tailed Ducks, goldeneye, Bufflehead, and Common
Mergansers. A handsome male White-winged Scoter gives very close views.
The large flock of gulls increases with the amount of ice
The male Tufted Duck was at Lock 1 today Thursday January 29 around 9:00 He
was sleeping and preening and associating with a scaup.
The Harlenquin Ducks were at Ben Machree Park at 1:00 p:m. They were easy
to spot, by themselves, directly in front of the park

While winter persists meteorologically at Presqu'ile Provincial Park,
the gradually increasing photoperiod appears to have stimulated some
bird behaviour that is normally associated with February or later, while
birders continue to anticipate the inevitable, but overdue, mid-winter
thaw.

This afternoon I found a heavily barred Snowy Owl on Brownlee Rd about 1/2
way between Eagleson and Shea Rds (west side of town). It was on the north
side in a cut corn field, sitting on a fence post, the kind that snow fences
are usually attached to. It was just sitting and looking
