Re: [Blackbelly] Colostrum question

2009-02-12 Thread Lorean Tadlock
Hi Barbara,

We tried all those nipples as well and found that our took to a baby
bottle with in a day or two. None of ours ever bit the ends off, they did
try though.

Lorean

I had to force feed ours by prying their mouth open and holding their head
still (on my lap). This went on for a week or more. The only nipples
they liked were the yellow and red ones and it was quite a chore to change
them over to the Jeffers nipples after they became too strong and chewed
he yellow and red ones to bits.

It was Carol who gave me the advice to put some honey in the sheep milk
replacer but I still had to force them at every feeding. Ironically,
twice when I left them with men for a couple of hours they were eagerly
taking to the bottle when I returned.

The tiny Boar (two died) I saved was very picky and liked a mix with
 buttermilk in it.

That's interesting to know because I tried the baby bottles and it seemed the
rippled part they really could suck with was further back in their mouth than
the baby nipple would reach. I also liked the way the nipples screwed onto a
water bottle since ours drank about 12 oz every 2 hours. This was a lot more
than the prescibed amount but they always finished the bottle and were crying
for more in 2 hours. They're big and healthy now so I guess it was OK.
I sent for a shipment of nipples from Jeffers with the feeding tubes just to
have on hand since Hilo town can have a Nipple crisis at any time.

On another note my ewe refuses to go into the yard with our bossy horned goat
(doe). They're now in seperate pastures but nobody seems happy especially
little bottle fed Harry (goat) who grew up with them. I just brought in a ram
and I'm wondering if she's just protecting herself and possible lambs. This
goat is awful and as soon as she kids we'll be trading her off.

[Blackbelly] Albinism~

2009-02-12 Thread Jules Pizz
Hello good list~I have a lamb (ram and a twin with one sister) that I THINK
may be an albino. I have been trying to Google and find out all I can about
Albinism and have not had much luck finding much of any useful information
on Albinism of any kind~let alone sheep. My sheep are predominantly Black
Belly but I have one purebred Polypay ewe and have several crossbreeds
between her offspring and herself with the Black Belly sheep. This lamb is
from a half BB and Polypay breeding mother and a Black Belly/Poly cross ram.
Have any of you had any experience with or knowledge of albinism? I thought
that with a true albino the eyes have to be pink/red. I am having a hard
time seeing what color this boy`s eyes truly are as he is skittish with a
skittish mother and he is only 2 and a half weeks old so I didn`t want to
upset momma or babes any more than absolutely necessary. I THINK his eyes
are blue but I am not positive... Thank you in advance~and I am going to
get updated pics taken soon for any interested. Julie Pizzolato in North

We have one ram right now that is being bottle feed (Babe). His mother is
the best sociable one we have but she will never feed both lambs, she
always rejects one of them. But Babe is about a week old now and he is
only drinking about 4 oz. every 3 hours. After see how much your drink, is
that not enough. We can't get him to drink anymore than that at a time.

We have two other of her that we have bottle feed in the past one ewe
(Faith) and one ram (Bustard Brown) with we had castrated. we have had
some tell us to get rid of her but we just love her, so we just keep her.
But this set of lambs will be her last for sure.

I have had similar crosses in my sheep. What makes you suspect albinism
over just a white sheep? All of my polypay/Barbados blackbelly were white.
Eye color can be tricky in a young lamb. If the eyes are blue I am guessing
you might truly have an albino.

2009-02-12 Thread Nancy Tom Richardson
I am raising almost a dozen lambs now. Different ages and reasons why. But
some of them only take 4 oz every 4 or 5 hours. And they are a week or more
old. I also dilute my milk a little bit making albout 18 - 20 oz instead of
the 16. This keeps away scours if they do over eat a little. I also have
some that are eating 7/8 oz every time. I guess it depends on the size of
the lamb and its needs. I figure as long as they eat they are okay. Nancy PS
My low colostrum ewe is doing great eating about 3 oz every 4 hours. She is
a Jacob and is starting to grow already,.

[Blackbelly] COAST TO COAST TRANSPORTATION - SALE!!!

2009-02-12 Thread Ron Keener
hello everyone!

the DEC/JAN trip was quite expensive for me as far as repair costs - I
am in a cash flow crunch to be able to pay for repairs plus my normal
'living' expenses during FEB/MAR - to generate the needed repair cash I
am resurrecting the 'Travel Discount Coupon' program

starting now and during the month of FEB I will be selling $100 discount
coupons for $50 - you can purchase as many of the coupons as you desire
at $50 each but only one coupon can be used at a time during the
2009/2010 transport trips - there is a workaround for this clause (see
below) - the $50 purchase fee will be going directly to my equipment
repair fund - I can accept Money Orders or PayPal as payment - I cannot
accept personal checks for this promotion - I will mail the
certificate(s) to your snail mail address - you can use them in the
future as needed

the $100 discount comes off of my standard transport fees calculated at
the time of transport - the discount goes to the bearer of the
certificate - this means that if you use the discount as part of the
sales promotion of your animals you can pass a certificate off to each
buyer - if I pick up animals going to multiple locations with one stop
at your location then you can assign a coupon to EACH buyer - this helps
your buyers and helps you sell your animals!

please contact me at rkee...@realtime.net to reserve serialized coupons
and to exchange snail mail addresses

[Blackbelly] MAR/APR trip is only a few weeks away!

2009-02-12 Thread Ron Keener
hello everyone!

reservations continue to stream in for the MAR/APR coast to coast
transport trip - early reservations indicate that a west coast loop
followed by an east coast loop is likely to occur - there are two large
loads on the west coast going eastbound so I am likely to be on the
west coast twice but there is likely to be only one east coast loop -
large loads mean that my trailer space is likely to be limited eastbound

remember that your early reservation is likely to be a deciding factor
in determining my basic route pattern - late reservations run the risk
of not being able to be included in my itinerary once a basic route is
established - even if your transport need is tentative it is best to
contact me as soon as possible so that I can reserve a 'route' in my
mind as I start planning

the economy may be tough but that just means that there are many
bargains out there to be able to purchase the bloodlines you have wanted
in your herd - an investment in the future of your herd is a yearlong
activity - breeding stock purchased now will bring results for your
sales catalog a year from now

I always need pick up city/state, drop off city/state,
and a brief description of the animals in every email please

I do not monitor the groups closely so please reply directly
to my private email address at rkee...@realtime.net

payment is due on delivery - I can take cash, check, MO, and PayPal

there is no contract other than your word via email

Tina pulled a 'corgi' on me - she normally rides with me when I go into
town - Wednesday I made her stay at home - she had such a pathetic look
on her face when I pulled out of the driveway without her - when I got
home several hours later no Tina - I called and called - no Tina - I
drove around the neighborhood for several hours calling and asking
people for sightings - no Tina - just before sunset I noticed my herd of
whitetail deer coming into the yard for their daily grazing - Tina was
with them! - I guess she decided to become a deer herder! - I know she
was within hearing distance when I was calling so she was 'punishing' me
for not taking her into town

so I thought - WRONG! - Thursday afternoon I am taking a nap - when I go
to sleep Tina was sleeping beside me - about 5 pm the phone rings - the
lady asks are you the owner of the missing Corgi? - I say Tina came home
last night - she says fine but she is here in my yard right now - I go
3/4 mile in the opposite direction that Jeremy went to pick up Tina -
she jumps into the van then immediately jumps out and won't let me catch
her - finally another person catches her - I take her home, she eats,
drinks, and 5 minutes later is gone again! - I call, search, drive
around the neighborhood for an hour - no Tina - shortly after dark she
comes walking into the house as nonchalant as can be!

I LOVE CORGIES! (but they can be frustrating!)
