Unlike Osprey that tend to dismiss nest proximity as populations grow, Bald
Eagles
in the east prefer a wide separation from other BAEA nests. It will be
interesting
to watch what happens here as the population of BAEA grows and how much
interspecies
tolerance with OSPR, as Diana mentioned,

Today as I sat in the staff lounge in Olin Library, it looked as though 2
Red-tailed Hawks were spending a lot of time separately and together at the
tower on McGraw Hall. Could they be working on a nest? Has anyone else noticed
this activity? I didn't have my binoculars with me.

We are about 80% sure it was a Short-eared Owl who flew very close to our
car as we were driving at Rt 96 and CR 129 in Ovid, 40 min ago. Definitely
not a Northern Harrier.

The first courtship and territoriality were obvious this morning on Mt
Pleasant, with 2 males singing from the patches of snow-free ground opened up
by the mild weather.

On Friday morning at about 10:45, I watched a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
at the intersection of West King and Sandbank Roads in south Ithaca. The
hawk hovered and kited in the wind, a few times floating dozens of meters
straight backward as if projected from a rewinding film reel.
Then a
Taking child to homeschool class at the MAC today, was a good excuse to do some
birding. Travelled up the east side of Cayuga Lake in the morning, then down
the west side about 3 pm.
Highlights were:
Northern Shrike on 34B just south of Jerry Smith Rd.
4 adult Bald Eagles on north side of
