RE: [cayugabirds-l] Louisiana Waterthrush
About three or four years ago I found similar differences in songs of Northern Waterthrushes. All in the same location, that is Sapsucker Woods on the Dryden side of the trails. Initially, I distinguished them by sound, then I recorded them and looked at the sonograms. I was surprised that my ears, which in the previous years could not distinguish between Northern Lousiana, but now could tell the difference between the individual Northerns was amazing to me. Definitely listening to more individuals helps! As noted in BNA, each male has a unique, although similar, song. I am aware of the following locations and would like to hear of any others. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Fri 4/23
I heard one NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH on Friday morning east of the Woodleton Boardwalk in Sapsucker Woods. This waterthrush sounded like a typical Northern Waterthrush -- not one with the Woodleton accent (dip in pitch in the middle, then emphatic at the end -- very distinctive in 2001-2003, less so in recent years). I've never noticed any different-sounding Northern Waterthrushes anywhere else. On a full circuit of the East Trail, I found no Hermit Thrushes. [cayugabirds-l] RC Kinglet
Today a Ruby Crowned Kinglet was singing from the spruces in my yard. I could hear him from inside the kitchen even through my closed doors and windows. His song seems that he is angry with someone and he is scolding them. Especially, with visuals his red crest fluffed up and the tan spot behind the eyes make him look angrier. There was also a Chipping Sparrow signing right over my head when I was waiting for the bus. I seem get used to the metallic quality (at least that is how I feel) and hoping I will get better at distinguishing individual chippies! [cayugabirds-l] Dryden Lake Trail 4/23/10
I spent almost 3 hours combing the Dryden Lake Trail for new migrants this morning. No warblers at all. 41 species total, but nothing new. While watching 2 N. FLICKERS copulate, I saw the female turn her head around toward the back, while the male leaned forward and to the side, and they grasped each other by their bill tips. I thought, anthropomorphically, how romantic. But, then again, maybe it was. [cayugabirds-l] Three trumpeters
Thursday while on horseback near ponds off West Genesee Street Road/ Short Road, Aurelius, we disturbed three trumpeter swans that had been on the pond bank. They circled and headed back towards the refuge. Thanks to the Lab of O, I identified them this morning by their calls. I remember reading about their very limited numbers and limited distribution when I was in elementary school in Union Springs. It strikes me as marvelous that I can now see them without even searching them out. Re: [cayugabirds-l] White throated sparrow campus
White-throated sparrows arrive every spring at this time around my house in Scipio. They scratch the leaf-litter, explore the ground beneath the feeders, and they practice singing in the bushes for several days--haltingly, thinly at first, then increasingly full- throated--then they just move on, rehearsal donemy annual frustration. [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Palm Warbler
Some Highlights from Sapsucker today included WINTER WREN (East trail), CAROLINA WREN (northeast side of the pond), YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER (near the 90 degree bend in Sapsucker Woods Road), and PALM WARBLER (same place). Also lots of RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and two very busy YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS (serious excavation going on). (Kevin, I met you on the trail today, and you told me about your son's Palm Warbler, and fifteen minutes later I blundered right onto it! [cayugabirds-l] catbird
I was at my friend's house on Skaneateles Lake and heard my first catbird of the year. Now I'm waiting for mine to appear. She also had a pair of red-breasted nuthatches. At home I heard a rufous sided towhee singing Drink your te. I've had white throated sparrows for several days now.
