[cayugabirds-l] thrush fallout this am
Over my section of south Danby, it turned out to be a pretty thin flight of Swainson's (no Gray-cheekeds) in the fallout this morning -- perhaps 100 calls from less than 20 individuals, just guessing, with most of the action between 6AM-6:15AM. [cayugabirds-l] Cattle Egret (no), Freese Road sparrows
At 7:10AM this morning, Chris Wood reported a flyover CATTE EGRET on Warren Road south of Rt. 13, heading SE. Livia and I drove around Bluegrass Lane and the Game Farm/Compost area in hopes of relocating it a little later in the morning, but we were unsuccessful. Keep an eye out, though, and let everyone know if you happen upon this bird! Lots of gulls at the compost, but nothing out of the ordinary. We walked around the Freese Road gardens afterwards. The cold front has increased sparrow diversity slightly there, with 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS and 2 SWAMP SPARROWS joining the throng of SONG SPARROWS, as well as a continuing handful of SAVANNAH SPARROWS and FIELD SPARROWS. We had 2 WILSON'S WARBLERS, 1 YELLOW WARBLER, and a NASHVILLE WARBLER in the hedgerow on the east side, and INDIGO BUNTINGS are still present in the fields as well. Good birding. -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
[cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Fri 9/16
I visited Sapsucker Woods on Friday morning, entering via the Winston Court apartments and the West Trail. South of the Sherwood Platform, I met Sahas Barve, who has just come here from Bombay to pursue a Ph.D. in biology (bird population studies). Then, for the next 20 minutes, Sahas and I could hardly keep up with the frenetic bird activity, triggered by direct sunlight incident on the edge of the cold shadowy woods. We saw BAY-BREASTED, MAGNOLIA, BLACK-THROATED BLUE (1 M, 1 F), BLACK-THROATED GREEN (1 M, 1 F or subadult), and WILSON'S WARBLER, plus a couple of PHILADELPHIA VIREOS and a lot of Red-eyed Vireos and Eastern Wood-Pewees. I feel that we probably missed many other birds in this flock. I also visited the east side of the sanctuary alone. There I heard a few scattered birds that I think were warblers, but I saw only one AMERICAN REDSTART. On my way back out again, I saw a migrating COOPER'S HAWK and the morning's biggest surprise, a flock of at least 9 WILD TURKEYS crossing the road. [cayugabirds-l] American Avocet, Montezuma NWR
Just got word of Larue and Jackie's weekly survey. Among a handful of other shorebirds at Montezuma, they report an AMERICAN AVOCET at Puddler Marsh off of Towpath Road this morning. Other birds of note include a Bonaparte's Gull and two Sandhill Cranes at Puddler, a Peregrine at Tschache, and a few yellowlegs and peeps at Mays Point. -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

[cayugabirds-l] Mt. Pleasant
I took a long walk along Mt. Pleasant Rd. just after lunch. I was hoping for hawks and such, but saw very few. Near a brushy area, however, I stopped to listen to some CHICKADEES, and out pooked a YELLOW-BELLIED FLYCATCHER. It was VERY yellow, even the eyering Then another flitted out, not so bright. Two E. PHOEBES were about-good time for feeding, once the bugs have warmed up.
