[cayugabirds-l] WHITE CROWNED SPARROW

2010-10-02 Thread Mary E. Winston
This a.m. (around 9:15) coming into work, on the bridge that leads from the
second parking lot at the Lab, there was a WHITE CROWNED SPARROW singing from
one of the bare trees.

[cayugabirds-l] Freese Road gardens, Sat 10/2

2010-10-02 Thread Mark Chao
At midday on Saturday at the Freese Road gardens, my family and I walked north
from the parking area next to the line of trees, then back through the middle
of the plots. I devoted much less time, attention, and spatial coverage to
birding than usual, yet saw the full roster of expected birds, including
LINCOLN'S (maybe 2 individuals), SONG, SWAMP, SAVANNAH, CHIPPING, FIELD,
WHITE-CROWNED, and WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. Peak sparrow season is here!

[cayugabirds-l] Fw: Snow Geese

2010-10-02 Thread Joseph Brin

Subject: Snow Geese

As reported by others before, there are three SNOW GEESE at Mercer Park on
the Seneca River in Baldwinsville. Apparently they have been there since late
summer. This in itself is not unusual but what is unusual is that these birds
have become as tame as the local Mallards. I saw people feeding them by hand
with the Mallards today. In all the years I've observed ducks in the park I've
never seen any Canada Geese get this tame. To my eye there is no evidence that
they are not wild birds.

 Any ideas anyone?

[cayugabirds-l] Yard migrants Saturday

2010-10-02 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Lots of birds moving through and over my yard this morning, and I added quite a
few yard birds for the year. Highlights were a single DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT
(over, not in), 2 TENNESSEE WARBLERS, 2 PALM WARBLERS, 6+ PURPLE FINCHES, and
an imm. SHARP-SHINNED HAWK that sparred with a flock of BLUE JAYS for nearly 30
minutes, joined by a PILEATED WOODPECKER that attacked and chased the hawk
several times through the trees. Quite entertaining.

[cayugabirds-l] Freese Rd gardens 2 Oct

2010-10-02 Thread Dave Nutter
Ann Mitchell I were at the Freese Rd gardens earlier than Mark family. We saw many of the same species, plus a couple he didn't mention, but missed Swamp and were unable to be sure of a Lincoln's Sparrow. Several Song Sparrows seemed to have some Lincoln's traits. The Song Sparrows all look sleek now, but still have lots of variety in color. It was great seeing so many White-crowned Sparrows. --Dave NutterCanada Goose - flyoversgull sp - distant flyingRed-tailed Hawk - 1 on wire; later 2 in separate parts of the skyMourning DoveRed-bellied Woodpecker - heardDowny WoodpeckerPileated Woodpecker - heardNorthern Flicker - heardEastern Phoebe - 1 between garden woods; very green yellowAmerican CrowBlack-capped Chickadee - 1 in gardenTufted Titmouse - 1 in gardenEastern Bluebird - 3 in trees across road, singing, flying to trees south of gardens Northern Mockingbird - 1 in hedge to southCedar Waxwing - flock in trees to southEuropean StarlingChipping Sparrow - 1Field Sparrow - 1White-crowned Sparrow - several each adults young; conspicuous, some singingWhite-throated Sparrow - several in northeast area of gardens; less conspicuous.
