Just saw a flock of 37 Brant flying up west side of inlet from Cass Park.
Virginia Rail and American Bittern calling at Fidlers Pond along 13a
south of Fidler rd and north of 13/96/34. Excellent views of both.
Don't understand why they like this area with heavy traffic, but I

Hi All,
I spent a wonderful 45 minutes birding around the perimeter of the newly
constructed wetland at Goetchius this morning. One could easily spend half a
day exploring the whole preserve and finds lots more.
Good Birding,

As Laura Stenzler noted earlier, there's a plethora of warblers in Sapsucker
Woods this morning, many offering excellent views. On a brief walk along
the Wilson Trail North that was very difficult not to extend beyond the 25
minutes I allotted myself, I ran into Mark Chao and Miyoko Chu with Mark
I birded the Hawthorn Orchard today from about 6:30am to 9:30am, again,
painful to pull myself away for work.
Today, many birders were there enjoying what the Hawthorn Orchard had to
offer for the day. Am I keeping a life birder list? Anyway, there was a
rare sighting today among those that I
Hi all,
I headed out on 366 late this morning to check Hile School Road. At the
intersection of Hile School Road and Ed Hill Road (ne of Freeville) I saw a
RED-HEADED WOODPECKER flying overhead. It seemed to come out of the woods on
the sw side of this intersection and fly ENE. I lost it over the
As Laura Stenzler and Scott Haber have noted, today's birding in Sapsucker
Woods is quite astonishingly good. In terms of bird diversity, certain past
days could perhaps match this one, or maybe not. But I have no doubt that
overall, for the quality of viewing as well as the quantity of species,
Our joy of bedroom window birding this week has been the two male orioles
visiting the hummingbird feeder. The hot coffee early in the morning adds to
the pleasure.

Good morning,
I arrived at work at the Lab of O this morning on time, just after 8 am with
the intention on NOT birding, but of getting some work done this morning! But,
as I walked from the parking lot to the north side of the building, I heard
Indigo Bunting singing, then Black-throated
Hawthorn had lots of birds too, many more Blackpolls today. It seemed like some
birds had left yesterday, but maybe not. It is just the weather which is rather
cool today compared to yesterday. Also, Hawthorn was hopping with lots of
birders, some rare to the basin:)

I've seen locally in many years.
I was first alerted to the action by an early morning text from my newest
neighbor, Jy McGowan -- thanks Jay! For about an hour starting at 6:30 AM,
waves of migrants, including
With George's permission, I have placed two of his images of the Northern
Saw-whet Owl onto my 2011 Hawthorn Orchard Picasa Album. It turns out that
this was quite the serendipitous sighting - George was in the right spot at
the right time. The bird flew in and landed. He captured these stills.
