[cayugabirds-l] one flew east, one flew west...

2011-06-07 Thread Geo Kloppel
Just spotted a Black-billed Cuckoo, moving surreptitiously from tree
to tree, carrying food for young.

[cayugabirds-l] Prothonotarys

2011-06-07 Thread Joseph Brin
The two PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were dueling across the road this morning on
Armitage Road. I also heard 2 YELLOW-BILLED CUCKOOS in the same area. I did not
hear or see Acadian Flycatcher.

[cayugabirds-l] Cass Park Sun 6/5 Sapsucker Woods Mon 6/6

2011-06-07 Thread Mark Chao
On Sunday morning, I saw an OSPREY twice carrying sticks to a light pole in
the middle of the Union baseball fields at Cass Park. These fields are just
north of the Children's Garden on the west side of Taughannock Boulevard;
the light pole in question is closest to the northwestern field (Field 8).
I never had the chance to get a magnified or close view.

On Monday, I took my mom to Sapsucker Woods for a brief walk. We saw four
hatchling GREAT BLUE HERONS in the nest on the largest snag in the main
pond. They appear nearly ready to fledge. My mom and I also looked briefly
for Orchard Orioles by Kip's Barn. We found none, but did enjoy some fine
views of an EASTERN BLUEBIRD, which may have been a life bird for my mother.

[cayugabirds-l] Bald Eagle nest in Tompkins County off NYS-89

2011-06-07 Thread Dave Nutter
Rick Manning called this afternoon confirming suspicions and rumors I've had or heard for awhile but never really checked out. While biking on Maplewood Road in the Town of Ulysses (the road off NYS-89 near Glenwood Pines Restaurant and the Ithaca Yacht Club) someone pointed out to him a BALD EAGLE nest with 2 large nestlings at the top of a pine tree. This is very cool that we have Bald Eagles nesting in Tompkins County! I had seen adults going in that direction from Stewart Park last year, so this may not be the first year for this nest.--Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma 7Jun11

2011-06-07 Thread Jay McGowan
Kevin and I made a pilgrimage up to Montezuma this evening after work.
We saw pretty much the usual assortment of birds and nothing that
hasn't been reported already. We waited for about 10 minutes before
the RED-HEADED WOODPECKER flew into the trees in Aurora from across
the road from the northwest. It foraged for a while in the tree along
the road edge, then flew into the nest hole, where it remained for the
rest of the time we were there. The two PROTHONOTARY WARBLERS were
still singing at 6:30 this evening, albeit less frequently than when I
have seen them in the morning. An ACADIAN FLYCATCHER called a few
times from the north side a little farther down the road to the west.
Finally, we looked around Tschache Pool for any lingering shorebirds.
Most of the pool is too dry now, but we did find a GREATER YELLOWLEGS
and five SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS in a strip of water on the far side
of the pool.

Good birding!
-Jay
